Batman: Arkham Origins’ Deformable Snow Tech Could Be Used for Mud and Sand and Be Persistent

One of the most interesting elements of the graphics of Batman: Arkham Origins is the deformable snow technology that added a layer of realism to the white curtain covering Gotham City.
Warner Bros. Games Montréal Lead Rendering Programmer Colin Barré-Brisebois held a panel at the Game Developers Conference showcasing the tech, and the presentation also included some interesting perspectives for the future.

I'd be really to beat that the snow was the cause of all the framerate issues.

Abriael1600d ago

If you check the slides, it says pretty clearly that it was very low in resource use.

Was this a PC only feature? Because I just beat this game today on xbox and have no idea what this is talking about

Ashunderfire861600d ago

Read again they said for consoles also. It use less memory too.

Are_The_MaDNess1600d ago (Edited 1600d ago )

actually, most of the effects in the game is not on the console version at all.
esp the DX11 tessellated snow and physx.

love all the disagrees here. the snow effects arnt even close to each other.

GamingTruth1600d ago

that said nothing about console it said so and so effect on/off so youre just wishing that this wasn't on the consoles even if it wasn't good luck finding anything near ps4 exclusives and xbox one exclusives on pc so have fun with this tiny feature over ps4 and xbox one youre pathetic

I didn't know Colin Barré-Brisebois had made a move to WB Games. He was one of the rendering guys on the Frostbite engine for many years. He's always been a great source of knowledge from his blog and tech presentations given whilst at DICE. This presentation was just as brilliant as always. Good stuff.

Uncharted 2 snow what? Batman Origin just one up you with the snow. Bu bu but Uncharted 4 will change that for the better on PS4, so all is not lost.

Are_The_MaDNess1600d ago

the PS4 is very limited in its API structure to make use of things like this. they have to make it from scratch and use a Parallaxing effect like this did in Uncharted 2. Parallaxing is cheap for the render, but its fake and flat, it might look like depth for the viewer but the texture is flat.

the Effects in Uncharted two is just scripted to the walking and running cycle animations and things like rolling dont effect the snow at all. also the effect was only there for a another few footsteps.

all the uncharted effect is a normal snow texture and then they place another texture with parallaxing under the feet when he steps down, then placing another texture witch also has parallaxing in it for the thrown up snow.

the uncharted effect looks good, buts its really simple when talking about effects. people have been doing this for many many years.

GamingTruth1600d ago

spoken like a true pc fan the fact of the matter is that ps3 is still the only platform to have a game that has interactive dynamic snow you can leave prints in and sand also, you speak as if you know more about tech in uncharted games than naughty dog have fun with you 2 pc fan agrees

Are_The_MaDNess1600d ago

who is a fan here? its just an observation of the textures and mesh they use.
if its a flat texture but looks like its deep in certain lighting, then the texture got a parallaxing layer on it. simple as that.

yes im a PC fan, does that really matter in this case? no, the PS3 and PS4 is very limited in its API and will not take use of many of the effects that PC gamers have been using for years now.

and did you really say that the PS3 was the only platform that had interactive snow?
the snow in uncharted is not bloody interactive. its the same and it doesnt change, they just layer more textures ontop of it.

how it is in batman it actually changes the mesh of the snow based on mesh collision.

its not my fault that you dont understand simple things like texture types and how meshes work.

elhebbo161600d ago

@gamingtruth your comment is retarded. anyone can notice how better the snow effect is in batman origins than uncharted 2. stop praising naughty dog like they are some god or something, no matter how much you spin it they are just devs working on a limited platform.

Rather than attacking someone, you may want to do your research first. You'll see a striking similarity between Are_The_MaDNess's thoughts on the technique versus how it was actually done at ND. It just so happens I already know of such a presentation:- , Page 47
