How 3DS became a massive (and unlikely) success story

"Wii U is dying." "Wii U is dead." "Wii U blah blah woof woof." Yes, the machine is in trouble, but everyone is so quick to criticise and put the boot in while Nintendo is apparently down, they’re forgetting one thing: 3DS is a massive success. And it’s just quietly getting the job done in exemplary fashion.

A real lesson in never underestimating Nintendo's ability to pull a success out of a slow start.

Geekman1276d ago

PC, Wii U, Playstation 4, 3DS.

Set for life.

DualWielding1276d ago

Hmm... you may also need a Vita

MNGamer-N1275d ago

I Agree. I just picked up a vita, and it's a good machine, I like it. No need for disagrees here. WiiU, Wii, 3DS, PS4, PS3, Vita, FTW

Geekman1275d ago

It DOES look attractive.

Disagrees incoming.

stragomccloud1276d ago

Agreed. Even though a Vita doesn't have too much.

It has must have titles like:
Muramasa: Rebirth
Persona 4 Golden
Uncharted: Golden Abyss
Gravity Rush

The ability to play digital PSP titles, and a wealth of PS1 classics!

I know that the PSP can obviously also do those last two things, but the Vita can compensate for the lack of buttons, and has a great screen to boot!

SixtyNine1275d ago

Being able to control the camera in Monster Hunter Freedon Unite(PSP) using the second analog stick on the VITA makes a world of difference.

I just don't get how people can disagree with what I said. I stand by it. Vita is a must have system.

@TwelveBitHero, I didn't know that. That's pretty cool.

Articles like this keep forgetting the main difference between Wii U and 3DS, 3DS has third party support yes the price drop and the first party games helped the 3DS bounce back but I doubt that would have been enough if it did not also had the awesome list of third party exclusives.....

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory1276d ago

3DS's true Japanese third party support came in 2012 after Mario came and skyrocket sales.

Dudebro901276d ago

It has good software. Not much of a story.

I wonder: why is it that the media (and community) consistently try to portray Nintendo as an underdog (whose success are "unlikely" and whose failures are inevitable) when Nintendo is a much, much, much bigger entity than Sony and Microsoft's game divisions combined?

They're not the underdog, people. They're the Big Boss.

stragomccloud1276d ago

They're the big boss, but it seems like it's the entire games industry against Nintendo.

wonderfulmonkeyman1276d ago

More like a bunch of AAA third parties against Nintendo.
Indies love them atm, and there's still a few smaller third parties that are paying proper attention to Nintendo's machines.
In all honesty, I don't think the Wii U's line-up is going to stay as barren as people think it will in the near future, even if most of the AAA third parties do ignore them.

stragomccloud1276d ago

Excellent point. Though I wish there would be more AAA games, I still have a my gaming PC to fall back on. It's just that I really love the gamepad, so I'd rather play on the Wii U, even if my system can make all of the current gen systems cry. lol

That said, I'm really enjoying the Indie lineup, and there's a lot to look forward to from Indies and from Nintendo. No matter how you slice it. It's a great year!
