Xbox One UK sales spike but PS4 still in control

Microsoft’s Xbox One has been the best-selling games console for four weeks in a row, MCV understands.

The machine has benefited from a £30 price cut, while the launch of Titanfall last week caused a surge in console sales of 96 per cent. (PS4, Xbox One)

Good to see both consoles doing well.

I agree. Someone has to be in the lead, but it's good to see gaming is going to keep pushing through another gen.

It must be short in every place except Amazon UK because once it went back into stock there it passed the X1.

Amazon UK bestsellers for the month of March to date:

Here is the current bestseller list by hour:

So basically, they needed a price cut and for their direct competition to have shortages to get a slight lead for a month in the UK? And they were STILL outsold worldwide?

I wouldn't say that indicates THAT healthy of competition.

@SilentNegotiator nope that's not quite true. Well here im Manchester anyway most shops that sell consoles have both the xbox one and ps4 in stick. The price cut has helped but we are over charged in the uk anyway for most products.

Xbox one sales were always going to pickup the closer we got to Titanfall coming out and it should be the same for the PS4 now it has Infamous coming out.

You also need to remember the 360 has a massive install base here in the UK and games like GTA will of stopped a lot of people from jumping to the next gen consoles but now that wave has passed and the big name games are coming to the new gen consoles people will look to move to the next gen consoles.

I still think the xbox one will sell more here in the UK and USA come the end of the gen but I expect the PS4 to outsell the Xbox one everywhere else come the end of this gen.
Giul_Xainx  +   692d ago
I agree it is good seeing the Xbox coming back. But I still feel that mist in the air looming over the Microsoft Xbox Division.

(Echoing from the past an xbot said: UK SALES DON'T MATTER! matter! matter.... matter...)
Menech  +   692d ago

Actually the PS4 is in stock across the UK, consumers simply prefer the Xbox One like they preferred the Xbox 360 before it. In the UK everyones friend owns an Xbox thus people continue to buy Xbox consoles.

I suggest you stop with the silly "It's only because the PS4 is out of stock rubbish" it simply isn't true.
fr0sty  +   692d ago

Barely managing to squeeze past the competition in only one country after the release of a flagship title and a price cut while still being outsold by a wide margin worldwide isn't exactly what I would call "doing well". It's good news, but must be kept in perspective. XBO still has a very long way to the top.

There has been a huge migration to PS4 in the UK so far. I seriously cannot see it being outsold by the XB1.

There's a clique of tv crew in London who just play FIFA against each other (between 50-100 people). All had 360's last gen, all have PS4's now. I seriously thought they'd go XB1, but once a few bought PS4's early on, the rest followed.

@Menech yeah but if you live in the UK and buy consoles from game you a)are nuts or b) have so much money you don't care how much higher their prices are consistently than ANYWHERE else.or c) you are really desperate. I'm not surprised GAME have console stock. I know amazon uk keeps flucuating from in stock to out of stock every few days and only recently started havinf any stock at all.
morganfell  +   692d ago

If you don't like what I posted, why don't you call Amazon and tell them they are lying about their own sales.

The PS4 is out of stock and other than a few Argos Stores, there is only the £629.99 bundle at Zavvi...and Amazon UK where it is outselling the X1. Try harder with real facts next time.

While you are at it, try posting real sales figures instead of a what a magazine estimates.

Everyone keeps making this false claim that nobody has PS4's in stock, but as Menech proved... they're widely available in the UK.

As for the US, the PS4 is IN STOCK at 9 of the 10 closest Best Buy's near me in SoCal. (if that doesn't work, search zip code 90803)

Also, both Fry's Electronics near me (Fountain Valley and Anaheim) have PS4 in stock.;js...

Most Walmart stores near me also have it.

ALL my local GameStop stores have PS4 in stock,

80% of my local Target stores have them as well.

Newegg also has them, so does Sears,

That being the case, can anyone explain why PS4 sales haven't skyrocketed because as we all know according to all the fanboys on this site... they keep claiming that PS4 sales are low due to shortages.

The above stores I listed have had PS4's in stock since a week ago.
styferion  +   692d ago

Gamer1982  +   692d ago
PS4 still sold out though, combined with price drop of the xbox actually lower than ps4 here in certain places it was obvious.
DeathOfTheFanBoy  +   692d ago
I know (physically know, as in real life friends) many more people with XB1 compared to ps4.

I live in the UK.

I believe, all fanboydom set aside, we will see similar sales figures from both companies in closing this new generation.... pretty much similar to last gen, both consoles have great things to offer and people like me want to experience the best of both worlds.
incendy35  +   692d ago
Same here in the USA, could be due to people buying PS4 for resale. Amazon resale of PS4 is very high.
DARK WITNESS  +   692d ago
if you have always been around xbox fans then chances are you will know more people with xbox's compared to ps4. Most people just don't like to shift once they are use to something.

Most of my friends that were xbox fans last gen are still xbox fans, but I do have a few that have actually switched to ps4. I also have some friends that got the xbox1 but after getting hands on with the ps4 they have openly said they think the ps4 is the better machine and they regret buying the xb1.

On the flip side, I don't know anyone who use to be a ps fan that has switched over to being an xb1 fan this new gen.

Last gen I owned both systems but the xb360 was my preferred console and 90% of my games I played on the 360.

This gen I have got both systems but now the ps4 is my preferred console to the point that I wish I had not rushed out and bought a launch xb1.

I know there will be great games on both systems so in the end it don't matter but thats been my observation.

I have to say, right now X-1 have the game that is more apeling for me (name it Titanfall...), but... hell! I realy can't see Sony in short of great games in next 12 months! they catched X360 and now they are in the lead, sony sure is better in games than microsoft.

I also live in the UK and went to trade my ps3 and 360 in this week, and i asked the owner (independant store) how the sales have been on the xbox one and his word were they have sold 50 PS4's to 5 Xbox Ones, looks like sony and microsoft have different strongholds throughout the uk
Copen  +   692d ago
@incendy35 Just go look at your local Craigslist or ANY Craigslist cities globally and look at how many people are dumping their X1's or trying to trade their X1's for PS4's and that says more than what you're saying. Even on Craigslist more people and i mean by a wide margin are selling or trading their X1's more than they are their PS4's and even second hand PS4's are selling above retail so that paints a pretty good picture of where things are and where they're headed.
hkgamer  +   692d ago
opposite for me.

Alot of people I knew back then had a PS3.

Now skip forward to present day. Most people still play on their PS3 or not game at all (excluding mobile). But for the people that bought next gen, every singl one of them bought a PS4.

You do realise that if something is rare to find in stock it means all units are selling through, right?

That should mean it's outselling the competition as it has been up until now.

Unless Sony's supply has suddenly reduced drastically. Then again you'd see PS4 sales numbers dropping off a cliff if that were the case.

OCEANGROWNKUSH  +   692d ago

XB1 units have been collecting dust on shelves since xmas... they are selling now because of titanfall, but thats going to taper off.

Fact is all the available ps4 units are selling, but xb1 has had more units TO sell, because they have been sitting on shelves... XB1 might be selling more but they arent selling out its stock, playstation is.

I always ask every time im in a store, i almost never get a yes that ps4 is in stock but theres plenty of xb1's nobodies buying.

@xx4xx: Almost. The PS3 got more of its price slash from cutting down the hardware and repackaging it. This is a bit more desperate, but definitely akin to what Sony went through last generation.

The difference here is Sony didn't give away free games to do this and they didn't price the PS3 below their profit margin. They just took longer to make up for the R&D.

Copen  +   692d ago
Not hard to do when you give away your biggest exclusive of the year and drop the price while your competition is supply constrained. MS may have sold some and i say some because IF it was a huge amount you can be damn sure the numbers would be touted which they're not. On top of that MS is taking a loss on every unit sold at a discount and a free game they're paying EA for and giving away. The sales haven't been significant enough to update the LTD numbers which is why they haven't so it suggests they're still not closing the gap despite Sony having supply problems which you can bet is concerning to MS. If they can't close the gap now with no supply issues price drops and free pack in games how can one realistically believe they ever will?

MS cant close the gap as Sony in a (SHORTAGE stage for now) even with Titanfall as they like simple fact no one want a X1 . what will MS do when Titanfall 2 come out exclusive on ps4 end of 2015 MS compete with another Halo really?? MS is that all you got.

the answer in the article :

*The console is reported to have benefited from PlayStation 4's hardware shortages and Microsoft's official £30 price cut, which came into effect three weeks ago. The launch of Titanfall has helped as well, with Xbox One sales rising 96 per cent during the game's launch week"*
vulcanproject  +   692d ago
There have been huge price slashes for some places as well.

Gamestop had the Titanfall bundle for £369.99 for quite long periods with a lot of stock. Ebuyer offers it at £375, Argos now has a deal where you get Titanfall and Thief for £399.99. Shop play have the basic machine for £349.99. This is 80 pounds slashed off the price only a month ago! Asda, Zavvi, Dabs, Maplin etc all with various deals that cut money off or bundle. You can barely move for all the deals.

LOTS and LOTS of deals and incentives around then to shift these consoles.

Price cut, offers and bundles with 'free' games are why Xbox One has moved better.

I wouldn't quite judge this as some sort of permanent shift in the fortunes of the consoles just yet. A large peak of Xbox One sales most likely just edging out PS4 sales which has had no special offers or significant new game releases.
#2.1.1 (Edited 692d ago ) | Agree(28) | Disagree(7) | Report
Gamer1982  +   692d ago
@vulcanproject EXACTLY the console is cheaper than the ps4 when you can actually get the ps4 as when ppl actually get hold of the ps4 its usually in bundle form meaning they have to buy games with it at full price.. So a PS4 with 2 games is like £450 and an Xbox is £420. When stock shortages end the PS4 bundles will become better and sales will drop for MS again..
vulcanproject  +   692d ago
It depends how large the sales disparity actually is. If it isn't that big then Sony will just sit back and do nothing and let the Titanfall hype and bundling die down, then jump back on top.

After all, they have offered very few deals up until now because well, they didn't have to to shift consoles!

If retailers maintain this sort of massive price slashing and bundling for Xbox One to move stock then maybe Sony will consider some minor deals, but I imagine for the moment Sony have little incentive to.

They will know as well this is not some sort of massive shift in fortunes, just a console enjoying the probably temporary second wave buyers who dropped on an Xbox One now it is a much better deal.

It would be nice for Sony to just throw in a free game and then we'll see PS4 sales soar again, that's how the market is right now as the second wave buyers hang around in the shadows for deals.

When they slashed the price of the HP Touchpad in the US, they sold tons of them really fast.

I guess my point is that increased sales aren't always a good indicator that everything is going well. There are lots of other factors to consider.

Do I have to buy the console as part of a bundle? Are they throwing in other things to make the console more appealing?

We spend too much time looking at pure sales numbers. There are many other factors to consider. Also, it's silly. We all want both consoles to do well, whether we know it or not. Competition is a good thing.

We all know this is a small petty victory. The sales margin Has been less than 1500 Each week. This xbone biggest game title until halo 5 With A Huge ad marketing campaign. Yes PS4 is in low supply. You can't just walk into any store AND Buy a PS4. Your link There was 3 just stores that had PS4 and and that not Plenty of Stock of PS4s . Could be just 1 PS4 in each of the 3 stores you listed. One store zavvi the PS4 is in a £629.99 bundle. Please stop acting like PS4 is easy to get and is fully in stock like Xbone.
In the USA and U.K xbone is tied or out selling Supply Low PS4 by the smallest of margins. The PS4 is still out selling xbone 2 to 1 worldwide by 60000 units according toVgchartz hardware sells. But congratulations on selling 2000 more units Than THE PS4 In the USA And U.K.
I'm sorry I agree with NightmareLuffy. I'm not saying price cut but PS4 should give something for free like a game or at least 6 months of free PSN+. Always match our competitors. I hope Sony focus on their multiplayer exclusives games that's why the USA and U.K buy xbox brand because of Microsoft focus on online multiplayer gaming. Since launch of the x box 1 only four of my friendS had bought an x box 1. Last week or two i noticed 4 more bought an x box 1.

People are just moving from 360 to xb1 and obviously some neutrals have also decided they prefer a xb1 over a PS4

bx81@ exactly lot of people haven't yet. But the spike in x box sales is likely due to the price drop and titanfall. Some x box 360 users have decided the time is right now to come over to x box 1. To some degree you are right on both counts, Amazon is already out of infamous packs and the other packs are on backorder. Though it can't be overlooked that MS has a solid install base in the UK combine that with a price cut and a game that captures the imagination.

It won't be till may IMO that we will be able to tell if this is the begining of a positive trend for MS or just a blip.

The US and UK, were the only two regions that were rock solid for the 360, the others Sony dominated in.

Besides, these figures are down to stock shortages, Sony just cant make enough of the damn suckers to feed global demand, they have already forecast shortages well into the summer.

GAME was also doing a deal for a while where you could trade a PS3 or 360 plus any five disc games and get an XB1 for £299 with FIFA 14. You just had to show the email where GAME sent with the offer - it wasn't advertised in stores, so not sure how much impact it would have had.

That was a pretty cheap deal, I was almost tempted. but as I still play PS3 a lot, and no longer own a 360 I didn't want to take advantage of it.
ocelot07  +   692d ago

A price cut or free game does help! It might get early adopters angry but it can drive further sales. There are still ppl holding back and wait for a good price cut. Sony should not rely on their success. If they want to win this clearly they should consider a price cut or a free game as well. There is nothing wrong to make it harder for the competition. If they can't release more exclusives sooner, they need to find a different way to convince those who haven't chosen a system yet.

gamer1138  +   692d ago
Given that Sony are considering a very competitive price for Project Morpheus despite the 5 years of R&D costs, I'm not sure they have the capital to take a hit on a price cut. The irony is the PS4 already has a price cut in a way; it's original price! No one expected them to come in that low and its worked out really well for them so far. Over 6 million people have proved they are happy to pay the original price.

Of course if you look to Canada, they've seen a price INCREASE. Down to the Canadian dollar apparently.
stuna1  +   692d ago
Sony has nearly 2 million reasons why a price cut isn't necessary!
kneon  +   692d ago
As long a Sony continue to sell every unit they can make then a price cut would just be stupid.
Nodoze  +   692d ago
You don't cut price on something that you cannot keep in stock. Comparatively you DO cut the price and offer buying incentives for things that are not selling and are filling up the isles.

This is 101 stuff.
No_Limit  +   692d ago
Glad MS is doing well in the UK. What a wonderful thing a bit of a price drop and a AAA game will do for a system. I am glad the XB1 and Titanfall is doing great.
tigertron  +   692d ago
Two reasons:

1. There are more Xbox Ones in stock then there are PS4s. PS4s are still in short supply due to large demand.
2. Titanfall.
3. Slight price cut.

...or maybe there is only one real, true reason why this happend.

Stay with me...cuz it's about to get real try to follow it comes:

Maybe some people actually wanted to buy the XBox One.

I know, i might not make much sense...i mean why would you want an XBox One when there's the mighty PS4 and Killzone in all of it's 1080p 60fps glory....oh wait, forget i said that last part about Killzone.

To be honest all the Xbox One was needed a price cut, it was way too expensive for what it was. It is now the same price as the PS4 in the UK in some retailers (not official).

It will still fail miserably outside of the UK and the US.

Well good to see their efforts made a impact.

1. Official price cut
2. TF bundle
3 Unofficial price cuts by some rettailers
4.I guess you could add heavy advertising of TF also.

Added value does help after all.

even with VGchartz hypothetical numbers we are actually talking something like 3000 units in the last 2 weeks (200 units before that).
Weekly sales are very low for both consoles since their launch month
pupa  +   692d ago
Sure, For the one console it's the lack of stock and availability and for the other console the lack of interest, So there are two lacks accounting for the result of low weekly sales. (wink)
powney91  +   692d ago
This is great news all round for everyone. Sony pushed MS to make a move, MS will be doing the same to Sony. Essentially, what we're going to have is two very, very awesome consoles :D

chrisarsenalsavart  +   692d ago
Ms move was one of desperation, Sony only needs to find a way to ramp up production.
Alsybub  +   692d ago
Actually, the post that was marked as trolling, while a bit harsh and un-necessary, has some truth.

Here's a quote from the article "expensive development costs left Sony warning it will take at least two years to break even on the console."

That means that they couldn't reduce the price, even if they wanted to. The PlayStation division is the only part of Sony that is making a profit but R&D means that it's in a situation of loss until those costs are recouped in two years time. That's regardless of them selling well.

Sony has been in financial dire straits for years. They've been teetering on the edge for a long time. Just because they're moving millions of units doesn't necessarily mean they're turning a profit. Especially if you take in to account their other divisions, such as televisions and entertainment.

If they had more funds they would be able to improve their production and supply channels.

I would hate to see them go under though. It would be the worst thing for consumers. Having only one big manufacturer would stifle innovation. That works both ways. If Microsoft pulled out of the console market then we would be in the exact same position.

Both consoles will succeed big time, and that will make both consoles BETTER. Don't be a hater, be a gamer.
Stoppokingme  +   692d ago
Pull your head out of the sand dude, haven't you realized by now that better sales equates to a better product? Has the internet taught you nothing???

Sarcasm aside, I agree with your message. Kudos to you.
MasterCornholio  +   692d ago
Depends what you see as better though.

Some people think the PS4 is superior due to its more powerful hardware resulting in superior multiplats and exclusives (technically). However some people might view the Xbox One as superior because of the camera.

But to each his own.

In my opinion the PS4 is better due to its lower price tag and superior hardware. I didn't buy a 1080P monitor to play games in 720P which is why I chose the PS4 since most of the games that I play are multiplats. Believe or not Infamous will probably be the first exclusive that I buy.
franko  +   692d ago
Yea. Let everyone choose. That's the point! The more choices, better gaming.
DoesUs  +   692d ago
Good, but i'd be shocked if it wasn't, given the shortages of PS4 and the hype/launch of Titanfall, and of course the price cut. Normal service will be resumed in the not too distant future though. 8)

Say only PS fan's. Irrelevant.

PSP GO, and Vita dead. This is a fact.

It X1 starts up nicely, and another 26 will be available officially in a country yet this year. Many people wait for this.
Flatbattery  +   692d ago
What the hell are you drooling on about?
Software_Lover  +   692d ago
It's all about the price. Get the consoles to a good price, people will buy.
TimeSkipLuffy  +   692d ago
I agree. If you sell the PS4/X1 one day only for $250 it will be sold out instantly. I would even consider to buy a second PS4 :D
MasterCornholio  +   692d ago
Apple disagrees with you. All you need to do is design a product that people want and charge what they are willing to pay. A firm can produce a console for under 99$ (Ouya) but if no one wants the product no one will buy it.
Software_Lover  +   692d ago
I didn't know Apple made a console, since I stated "consoles" in post. I understand what you mean and I should've been more specific in my post instead of a generality.

Ouya had no major marketing, no one knows the company, and their games can be played on mobile phones. Everyone has a mobile phone, that I'm sure cost more than the Ouya itself, so there was no need to buy that product. Not to mention you can play those Ouya games on your PC/TV anyway with bluestacks or with a phone with HDMI out.

Point taken.
Psygnosis333  +   692d ago
Actually Apple did make a console back in the PSone era :P

Good to see some Xbones moving but they still have 100,000s to catch up the PS4 in the UK!?
TristanPR77  +   692d ago
This report seems to be contradictory to other reports but if that turns out to be true the reason os the PS4 shortage. That is what happened last December on US, xbone sold more because PS4 shortage.

It's look like the only way the xbone sold more than PS4 is when the PS4 have shortage problems.
UsUcK  +   692d ago
This is only the beginning.
Pintheshadows  +   692d ago
They are still available in shops whereas PS4's are still hard to find.
KNWS  +   692d ago
I don't think you get it. Microsoft has more supply, as they only distribute consoles to 13th markets its got nothing to do with demand. Microsoft can fill the shelf's of a shop easier.

Sony is overstretched because they sell in 53 regions and even if they had an the supply. This doesn't mean people would not buy an x box 1. That's just fanboy talk if you ask me.

People on the 360 are likely moving to the x box 1 if you don't believe then why is the xb1 selling better in the UK for the last month. Are these people PS3 owners? New gamers picking the xb1 over PS4?

It's you with the deluded mind that do not get it. Think for a moment.
-Why are there still Day one versions available
-If your statement carries any weight why are M$ playing dumb and not releasing the overstock somewhere else
-Why on Amazon every time the PS4 is in stock it jumps to number 1 until it's sold out yet the in stock XBone hardly ever features

As for your question "WHY are the Xbone selling better in the UK for the last month?" ... because it was reduced in price with free Titanfal plus additional games in some other promotions and consider as well M$ increased advertising out of desperation, THATS WHY. Only your deluded mind fails to accept facts no matter if it stares you right in the face and someone give them to you for free. Proof of the pudding will be when we see soon the next round of sales numbers when the PS4 is back in stock let alone considering the availability of Infamous in addition.
Pintheshadows  +   692d ago
I never said people wouldn't buy an X1 but I certainly think that if both were in stock in would colour their decision significantly.
jimbobbeers  +   692d ago
Amusing how many are blaming it on PS4 shortages. Nonsense, it is readily available to buy in most stores across the UK, but people see they are short on stock online and they think it means it's not available. Rubbish, pure rubbish.
Pintheshadows  +   692d ago
Not really dude. In Norwich, GAME, HMV, both Sainsbury's, Asda, both Tesco's, Hughes electronics, Currys/PC World are all void of PS4's but not X1's.
candy_mafia  +   692d ago
Dude, even though you're making total sense, jimbobbeers doesn't wanna read that. Save your typo's on someone sensible :)
jimbobbeers  +   692d ago
I live in the outskirts of London, and its the complete opposite. Very odd.

Yes he does make perfect sense, and I do want to hear it cause I find it amazing that stock levels would vary so much from county to county.

People buying Xbox one because they wanted Xbox one not because ps4 it's not available and no one forced Sony to release ps4 in 52 countries if Xbox one was released in 52 countries they would have same situation tbh Xbox one doing so much better than ps4 do a math before saying something or dislike my comment

Dlacy13g  +   692d ago
A little price/value correction goes a long way.
cfc78  +   692d ago
If i only brought 1 console this gen and it was a ps4 i wouldn't just go out and buy an xb1 because i had to wait a while. i think xb1 is selling on its own merits not because ps4 is out of stock.
Because there's no ps4s left in the uk ha.
candy_mafia  +   692d ago
That's awesome for Xbox UK...

The title is a little misleading though. Xbone 4 weeks on top, because the PS4 was difficult to find in that region, and I'm not interested in fanboy propaganda stating plenty PS4's were available in their town.

So, I imagine that many people got an Xbone due to availability. The Xbone has been super easy to find just about everywhere.

Plus, Titanfall was bound to sell consoles, obviously. Keep up the good work MS/UK...maybe another 30GBP price cut for E3 too!

gamers with XX Platin/ Trophys will stay @ PS

You do realize that not a single real achievement has EVER or EVER WILL be done on a gaming console right?

They mean jack squat to me. Trophys or gamerscore.

I certainly am not going to make a console choice on a fake nothing like that.

..anyone that does make a console choice because of trophy's or a moron. Forrest Gump couldn't hold a candle to these people.

That's a fact.
RosweeSon  +   692d ago
Well I have 175k gamerscore have I gone to Xbox one, hell no, I'll keep hold of my details and still have my xbox 360, but I can assure you the fact I have 175k of gamerscore doesn't even come into wether or not I'm buying the next console, I never bought the xbox 360 for it's achievements but was a nice addition, if I was gonna worry about gamerscore the rest of my life sure I'd have been on an xbox one since day one to get my "free achievement".... Pass I bought my next gen console on the basis of who is offering a better service and who I am happiest to put my faith in, hello ps+ and a playststion 4. It's been said before it's technically superior FACT! And Cheaper. Does it need or will it get a price cut, not this side of 2014! Mark my words why would Sony decrease the price when they can't get enough of them on the shelves, could be wrong but swear I heard they out the price up! In canada. Bit over the top and can't see that will take place elsewhere but what a bargain console and it's a blinder as well, do what you gotta do but just think a little and take of your biased specs before making a decision we all do it from time to time but don't by rubbish just for the name on the box you'll be very disappointed in 12-18 months when sony do the complete opposite to what they did on ps3 and play second fiddle, this will not happen this generation and if anyone's gonna spend the entire time trying to play catch up it'll be Microsoft and Xbox.
