Nintendo shutting down Wii & DS Online -Updated-

While the Wii and DS didn’t exactly have what most would call a robust online experience, it did come with a good few games that had online capabilities. Nintendo has announced, on its website today, that it was going to be shutting down the online component of the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS game systems, along with many of its games on May 20th 2014. (Nintendo, Nintendo DS, Wii)

Every time I see a see a story on Nintendo shutting down Wii online access, I have to say this: Why should I trust Nintendo now, on any of their systems, after they pull the plug on the Wii so quickly and so completely? At the very least, I'll never buy a game for a Nintendo system which requires online access. If it doesn't play well offline, missing features, or whatever, a rental is the best they can hope for.

Sony and MS and every other game company do the exact same thing.

Yes and no . Everyone shut down their consoles eventually after a while , and it mostly was decided casis by casis with games and their publishers , however even a few ps2 game were still online till 2010/2011 . Microsoft itself online shut Down Original Xbox Live Servers in 2010 for a console from 2001 .

The DS and Wii are from 2004 and 2006 . That's way too early to shut it all down and abusive .

Especially knowing Nintendo is actually very rich and healthy , as you said below .

So i have issues with it , as much as i find shutting down GT5 servers to force moving people to Gt6 ludicrous .

Nintendo despite pioneering the field with Sega , just isnt as invested , to this day , into online gaming .

'Microsoft itself online shut Down Original Xbox Live Servers in 2010 for a console from 2001 .'

So that's 9 years....

'The DS and Wii are from 2004 and 2006 . That's way too early to shut it all down and abusive . '

So that's 10 years and 8 years. Strikes me as in the same sort of ball park really.

I don't know of 1 game for the Wii that requires you to play online. All these games can still be played multi player split screen. You know like we did for the last 30 years before online came about.Nintendo is one of the few company's still supporting split screen play in all their games. You have been able to play Mario Kart Wii online free for 6 years! And that's not good enough for your $50?Quit being a cheap A$$ if you want to play MK online buy MK 8 for the Wii U.You know Nintendo's new system that's not 8 year's old. No Company's going to support these services forever nor should they be expected to.The Wii had a great run now let it die already.

Makes sense, nintendo is struggling right now so shutting down the wii games that ppl even play online will make people go and buy a wii u and the new mario kart and super smash brothers

Nintendo is thriving a lot more than Sony or MS are right now.

Nintendo is growing, the others are shrinking the game divisions.
