Is It Fair To Judge A Game On What Isn’t There?

An opinion piece via EMGR in which the author discusses games the likes of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and inFamous: Second Son while posing the question of whether or not it is fair to look at what a game does not have and then be critical of it for that reason.

Quote: "As examples, can you criticise Titanfall for not having a flowing narrative or any sort of offline singleplayer of any kind, if by design that was never the point of the game in the first place? Likewise, can we criticise Journey for being more of a snapshot of a game, a singular experience rather than a holistic collection of such? Can we really look at Ground Zeroes with its under-two-hours-long game time and criticise its value for money?"

No. I wouldn't take points away from Titanfall or Warhawk for not having campaigns and I wouldn't take points away from inFamous: Second Son for not having multi-player. That's just ridiculous.

SnakeCQC3691d ago (Edited 3691d ago )

Warhawk had a very comprehensive multiplayer with many different modes no dumb ai. Ohh and while uncompressed audio sounds good(pardon the pun) the audio quality isn't improved and the files are just bloated. I feel scammed by my purchase of titanfall.

WeAreLegion3691d ago

You have a couple of good points there. The audio in Warhawk was insane! Still is, by today's standards. I just wish the community were still big.

Galletto33691d ago (Edited 3691d ago )

To be honest I would add points for not trying to shoehorn an unnecessary multiplayer into a game that doesnt need it. (exaggeration, but still)

Too many SP centered games try to force a bland and boring MP experience which detracts players from the fun and the devs from creating the game.

Like Spec Ops: The Line devs called their multiplayer literally a cancer on their game, forced on them by the publishers.

nicksetzer13691d ago (Edited 3691d ago )

Well sure, if it is shoehorned in, but how about taking actual time and effort toake both enticing? Like gears of war? Halo, the last of us, etc. Lack of effort does not entitle a higher score.

EDIT: Nor a lower score for that matter, may I add.

nicksetzer13691d ago

Most negatives for titanfall were lack of singleplayer. (Or expectation of insane amounts of multiplayer content due to lack of single player)

ginsunuva3691d ago (Edited 3691d ago )

No we expected much more than what was given for $60. Not really "insane."

Most don't care that it had no sp. Many mp-only games out there are fine.

antz11043691d ago

I agree, I feel everyone who bought Titanfall knew what they were getting. They were informed from day one on what the game was going to be. This is unlike Aliens: CM which was a different product and Brinks ultimately broken play system.

Its what I didn't say that should be judged by down vote.

IanVanCheese3691d ago

Depends on what it is. Should Titanfall be marked down for being multiplayer only? No. Should Infamous be marked down for not having multiplayer? No.

Should Ground Zeroes be marked down for being 2 hours long and £30...maybe.

SnakeCQC3691d ago

Wasn't ground zeroes Reduced to 20 quid for the retail version and 10 for the digital one?

IanVanCheese3691d ago

Xbox One and PS4 version are £28. Admittedly you can find them cheaper on Amazon but still, too expensive in my eyes.

A demo for Phantom Pain would probably have been about that long, and that would have been free.

SnakeCQC3691d ago

On amazon the retail ps4 and xb1 versions are both 23 quid....

IanVanCheese3691d ago

True, but amazon undercuts the RRP of all games. Titanfall was 37 there and 45 at GAME.

Even then, it's too much. It's basically an MGS version of Dead Rising's Case Zero. People would have kicked right off if that had been £20+

SnakeCQC3691d ago

Exactly why pay more when you don't have to.

Dakidog3691d ago

If it was designed without multiplayer or campaigns then no,how ever selling a game with short content at a premium price is different. This has always been criticized and always will be, gamers have always expected length in gameplay and bang for their buck.

Bennibop3691d ago

I agree, which is my issue with Titanfall its very short on gamemodes, weapons etc for a multiplayer only game selling at £45. Warhawk was £15 and has more modes, weapons and vehicles and I didn't feel like I was ripped off.

100%, locked 60fps and still look great all these years later, same with the expansion, definitely worth a look if people haven't played it yet, not the best games ever made but a good experience, hopefully a new infamous gets released

KwietStorm_BLM104d ago

Never was my favorite infamous, but it was definitely a graphics showcase early on PS4. Still plays well with the unlocked frame rate.

SDuck103d ago

Still remember getting hyped about this game nearing release. Funny because I never even got a PS4. Jumped from PS3 to PC so I never played it ahahaha

OmegaSoldati103d ago

Its a good game. But thats it. Congratulations you made the best choice. I dream to have a great PC one day.

Profchaos103d ago (Edited 103d ago )

Graphically It's a absolutely stunning game that still holds up today.

Didn't have all that much depth to it forcing you to play though twice for a platinum trophy a good and bad run it was a little disappointing how similar those were Delsin would be like I'm not doing that for you in a cutscene but the cutscene would play out and force you to do it anyway just as you would of in a good run

I did like the story however it got a lot of complaints back in the day people hated playing as Delsin instead of cole despite Coles story being wrapped up.

Overall though the map wasn't overly saturated with useless points of interest there was some collectibles and things to find but nothing compared to a Ubisoft game.

I think it was a good game if a little hollow I've played it through around 4 times now since it's so short.

Also it's DLC was great a full story expansion

I've played 15, and I wouldn't consider any of those underrated TBH. Some of them are pretty high rated.

banger88135d ago

That's amazing, Gamingbolt actually put all 15 games on the same page.

shinoff2183134d ago

I. Not seeing anything on that list underrated. I never played concrete genie, the ASTRO vr,and one other but I forgot the name already. Nothing on there was underrated at all imo.

persona4chie134d ago

There’s only 4 of those games I never played, and no most of those aren’t underrated.
