The Last of Us: Left Behind DLC Review | Adventures in Poor Taste

Is Left Behind a good enough reason to dive back into the cordyceps-infested USA? It depends. If you’re able to look past questionable pacing, conflicting tones of the segments, unfinished origin story and short completion time, then download Left Behind right now. If not, it’s best to hold out for a sequel. It’s a dangerous world in there.

It was a bit slow paced but I think the whole point of this DLC was to tell another story, to kind of help you understand Ellies character more. Overall some people just don't like games that aren't 100% action and gameplay, I know a few people myself that could care less about story, they skip over the cutscenes cause they just want to play. Not saying that's bad, but if you don't like games that make the story a focal point, you won't like TLOU.

ArbitorChief3692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

It was a pretty meh DLC IMO, didn't nearly live up to the expectations of TLOU master piece of a campaign. Too short and there wasn't enough time for character development for me to care about the new characters. Plus it would of been nice to have more Infected sequences, I love the human AI and Infected combat scenarios, I'd love for ND to expand on that.

hulk_bash19873692d ago

SPOILER-ALERT: I guess it's all about preference as I thought that this DLC did a great job of showing how Ellie became the person she was before meeting Joel. And also shows why she holds on so strong to keeping Joel alive while he was injured. Of course you can only tell so much in a 2 hr story but I thought that it was a great look into the past of one of TLOU's central characters.

chickenface3692d ago

With the name arbitorchief and a profile picture of halo, never would have guessed you saying "it's a pretty meh DLC IMO". What an absolute suprise

ArbitorChief3692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

I loved how you ignored the part where I said The Last of Us campaign was a master piece and even commented on the best parts of the TLOU DLC saying ND should expand on the Infected and Human combat scenarios.

kayoss3692d ago

"Half finished story" was one of the cons.
Wtf??? Does he know that the story ends in the main game?

Ezz20133692d ago

i caught that as well
i have no idea what he means by that

but hey, the site name is ""poor taste""
soo this tells you every thing you need to know about them

SamPao3692d ago

I guess he wanted to see her friend die.
How about using some imagination mister writer...wow

Kivespussi3691d ago

I think what he MEANT is that Riley turning should've been included and it was missing. I thought that way too and stil do but still the DLC was great. I just feel like it could've been a heart breaking, touching moment if ND just would've included Riley turning and Ellie slowly finding out that she isn't going to turn.

kayoss3691d ago (Edited 3691d ago )

Ok... But that was explained in the main story. I like how they ended it in the DLC. When i was playing the DLC, i really invested myself in both characaters. It would have been really cheesy in my opinion to show ellie shooting her best friend.

Yeah well. How did you miss Joel's cliff hanger lie to Ellie at the end of part 1. If that's not a top 10 moment then half your list isn't either.

Inverno936d ago

Honestly one if not the best ending to a video game I've ever seen. It was like the end of their journey but a cliffhanger to the rest of their lives.
Also a top 10 list is a little odd to do for the type of game this is…

MIDGETonSTILTS17936d ago

Things you missed:

Hotel basement
Getting trapped upside down and then saved
When Ellie killed the rabbit
Carrying Ellie

Playing as Joel at the beginning of Part 2
Seeing a baby walk in the snow in Jackson
Snowball fight with kids before patrol (& creepy PTSD of brick throwing from Part 1)
Finding the stash, and getting chewed out by Jonathon
Running through the woods as Abby
The fence, and fighting alongside Joel as Abby
Searching the empty house for Joel, and finding the basement door
Outside Seattle, overwhelmed with grief and mystery
Killing first Wolf (my first kill of Part 2 was named Casey, silenced pistol to the right temple, won’t ever forget the pink mist)
Mole King
“Don’t, she’s pregnant!” >>> “GOOD.”
The entire aquarium set piece
Getting my head blown off by Ellie as Abby
Ellie’s waking nightmares back at Jackson
Discovering that I’ll never be able to play Joel’s song ever again

ArchangelMike936d ago

Ellie absolutely slaughtering David, and then Joel turning up and just embracing her - has to be up there in the top 3 moments from that game.

ArchangelMike936d ago

The mistake was combining both games into one top 10 list. Author could have written two articles and got two sets of clicks, as well as doing justice to so many awesome moment from both games.

sourOG936d ago

Really? lol. I didn’t know it was that big. I thought to have your own “may 4th” you needed decades of content and a religious fandom.

ChickenOfTheCaveMan936d ago

The Ellie and Joel discussion after she escapes and then brings up the Sarah subject in the first one is just heartbreaking and awesome, that's a turning point for both characters. In part two, I feel like the "he was just...ready" scene is underrated af, you really see how Owen got his moment of clarity where he was really young and hopeful as a Fireflies and just died inside by becoming a WLF, he wasn't cool with ending like this old scar.

Top 10 DLCs of All Time

Examples of DLCs that are NOT cynical cash-grabs are few and far between. These rare gems can significantly expand upon and improve the base game. GameLuster's Nirav Gandhi highlights the top ten DLCs of all time. Publishers take note - these are DLCs done right.

My favorite DLC list would be:

10) Dragon Age Origins: Awakening
9) Assassin's Creed IV: Freedom Cry
8) Destiny: The Taken King
7) Fallout 4: Far Harbor
6) Fallout New Vegas: Lonesome Road
5) The Elder Scrolls V: Dawnguard
4) The Elder Scrolls IV: The Shivering Isles
3) The Last of Us: Left Behind
2) Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare
1) The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine

Honorable) Mass Effect 3: Citadel, The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone, FarCry 3: Blood Dragon, Diablo III: Reaper of Souls
Also) Fallout 76: Wastelanders (Actually brings some sense to the game) (Should be a standalone offline title)

Ricegum1427d ago

Not a single Borderlands DLC on there. For shame.

RaidenBlack1427d ago

Actually I missed out :-
GTA IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony
Infamous First Light
Dark Souls: Artorias of the Abyss
Bloodborne: The Old Hunters
Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds

Where’s Big surf island from Burnout Paradise? And all the extras.
GTA4’s dlc was one of the best ever
Undead nightmare was brilliant My 3 favourites off top of my head great value and great content

toxic-inferno1427d ago

Big Surf Island hadn't even crossed my mind!

I know there are plenty of good examples of how to do good DLC (and that Burnout Paradise isn't the most popular in the series amongst fans), but I remember being blown away by the way that Criterion supported Burnout Paradise. The game grew so much since its original release.

RosweeSon1427d ago

Yeah majority for free as well the island would have been free from what I heard but EA wanted to charge luckily wasn’t too expensive and got time money’s worth. Really enjoyed that game and all the content. A Delorean is always gonna be a winner for me 😂✌🏻

RosweeSon1427d ago

Prey Dlc is currently £6.49 on PSN 59% off think I’ll grab that now haha.

ifrit_caress1427d ago

Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3 DLC was great, Horizon: Zero Dawn's Frozen Wilds DLC was good.

RosweeSon1427d ago

I’ve not got round to the frozen wilds yet I need to soon really enjoyed the base game

MoonConquistador1427d ago

An excellent addition to the game, well worth it.

Tacoboto1427d ago

Not even an honorable mention for Frozen Wilds, shame. Damn that expansion felt and even looked better (artistically - those hot springs!) than the base game.

toxic-inferno1427d ago

Yes, the Old Hunters was fantastic - incredible how much they managed to expand the lore of the game, while creating a short, yet incredibly rich, genuine Bloodborne experience. In a way, it's a shame it didn't receive more DLC, but to have such a successful game and follow-up DLC is so rare that we probably shouldn't complain!

pwnmaster30001427d ago

With the amount of fans bloodborne has, I am very surprise they haven’t made a sequel or more DLC. I’m hoping for a sequel for the PS5.
If Sony let’s this franchise die then it will be a major loss to me.

UltraNova1427d ago (Edited 1427d ago )

Pwnmaster,

It's not up to Sony entirely, is it? From Software is busy with Elden Ring so I wouldn't hold my breath for BB 2 anytime soon.

pwnmaster30001427d ago

@Ultra
I could of sworn Sony own the IP.
Was thinking they can push it or something

toxic-inferno1426d ago

The franchise is showing no sign of dying yet - they keep bringing out more and more merchandise for it all the time!
