Top 10 Best 2D Platformers

Alex St-Amour from 3GEM writes: 'The 2D platformer, one of gaming’s stalwart franchises in the late 80s and early 90s, has made a comeback in recent years thanks to efforts of small independent developers as well as mega-corporations like Nintendo and SEGA putting their best feet forward as they scroll from left to right. For this week’s Top 10, we decided to highlight the best of the genre that many of us cut our gaming teeth on.'

Rayman legends must be in top 5 and it's for sure better platformer than limbo.

Stronly agree with the number one spot but have to say (and I think most who have played it would agree) Max the curse of brotherhood is an amazing piece of artwork and certainly deserves a place in this top ten.

If you enjoyed old school Nintendo games back in the day and own an XB1 I cant recommend Max enough, for £12 it's worth every penny. I actually finished the game and immediately started playing from the beginning again.

That game rivals 3D World.

no SM3 ? no Sonic 2 ? missing like 20 other great games. weak list.

"missing like 20 other great games"

Top 10.

And it's their own opinion?

how can super mario bros 3 not be on the list? also I would not call Limbo a platformer, it is a puzzle game.

Donkey Kong Country 2 deserves it. Super Mario World is good, but I'd put SMB3 or Yoshi's Island above it. And Yet It Moves is also incredible. It never seems to make these lists though. Also, why that Kirby?

I agree!! Best platform of all time for me its DKC 2!! Though, SMW is an epic game, so epic but I don't understand why is missing Super Mario Bros 3?

Ducktales was wonderful but Ducktales 2 was much much better.

Kirby DS was a great platform but Kirby's Adventure or Kirby Dreamland were epic too.

I would add in that list Wario Land for sure and cave story.

I have been playing platform games from NES era and I have to admit that Plok deserves to be in top 10. A game not so famous but much better than many games I see in that list...

Agreed with all of that. Also, H.E.R.O. on the Atari 2600.

Yoshi's Island is still to this day one of the BEST paltformers ever. It's creative in so many ways. I never felt the same for the new iterations though.
