Anthony Molé explains how charm can help turn a bad game into an entertaining experience.
Twinfinite writes:
Not satisfied with just giving fans good game deals on the PSN store, Atlus is putting up four games up for discount in Amazon's Mayhem sales event.
The author intentionally plays bad games for your twisted amusement. Tonight's Episode: The Cursed Crusade
Digitally Downloaded writes: "This generation has put up some truly amazing games – both high profile and niche. But, of course, it has also put up some real disappointments. Games that should have been great, or looked great in the promos, but didn’t follow through with the promise."
Aye, some of these games are actually pretty good. When I saw Kingdoms of Amalur and Dragon's Dogma on there, I was like O.O? THESE are your biggest disappointment? new IPs that are actually pretty good games?
Never mind the fact that Duke Nukem didn't make the list, there are still tons of games that were sold to be something, but delivered nothing.
ddogma, kingdoms of amular, alice, shadows of the damned....shouldnt be on this list, they werent even hyped games, they were must plays imo this gen. the others were pretty bad games though.
Honestly, how could anyone list Dragon's Dogma as a disappointment? First of all there was zero hype for it, so how could you have such high expectations to allow such a huge disappointment?
And more importantly it's my favorite game of the year so far. It's really amazing. Most of the negative reviews I've read all seem to not understand how to play.
EX: "The pawns talk way too much!" That's funny because if you sit down at an INN with a pawn you can tell him to talk less.
"The pawns are always running far ahead even when I tell them to come close" Well that's because you set them up that way and that can be changed as well.
The list goes on but you get the idea
It's seriously so great.
kingdoms of amalur has no business being on this list.
in fact, a lot of this list is just lame.
in order for something to be disappointing, there has to be some hype/buzz about it in the first place.
how about La Noire? how about Lair? Too Human? Brink? FF13? FF14? Force Unleashed?
i have a question. why do idiot "articles" like this even make it to the front page? any moron with a blog can churn out junk like this on a daily basis.
Dragon's Dogma is damn good. This guy must be blind or Petarded. (family guy, fyi)
Lol I agree that some of these games shouldn't be on the list but some of the above games make no sense at all. There doesn't have to hype for a game for an individual to have high expectations.
Also some of the Gamen's listed below I.e crackdown I can't believe people actually had expectations for. Crackdown 2 looked scrap from the day it was announced.
Yea, this guy has horrible taste, he seems to have a gear to grind against Fantasy-adventure type games or something. Most games listed involve swordplay, him adding Resonance of Fate just cuts the cake though, he either is craving for traffic attention or whoever this person is, has the shittiest taste and sense of judgmental and self-glorified opinion in the world for this very moment.
I'm hooked on DDogma, it's a damn solid game, I had anti-Capcom fanboys heckle at me enough for not bashing the game simply because Capcom made it, let alone I have over 40 hours put into it and it's like SoTC + freaking Dark Souls + Monster Hunter, how can anyone say No?!
Game Article Law #20:
Any article with "Disappointing" in the title sucks.
The pixel has spoken.
Gran Turismo 5
Final Fantasy 13
there are were alot more dissapointing games this gen. Some of those games are terrible i wudnt even say they dissapointed gamers.
terribles games are terrible but those games that dissapoint when expectations and hype are so high and the game seems really good turns out to be average dissapointing game.
GT5 HYPED???? lmao!!!
Its only the best car simulation game ever made ... yeah hyped ... *cough*
"Too Human, Haze, Crackdown 2, GT5 and FF13 definatly."
Agree those are crap games.
I think FF 13 and GT5 was disappointing relative to the hype (or expectation of gamers). Neither were or are terrible games by any means.
Terrible is like Ninja Gaiden 3! Went from highly anticipated to not worth buying in the bargain bin.
@aaron&trebius
don't worry, gt5 was only disapointing for people who can't play it (like the 2 xfanboyz here).
@ superlupe
GT5, REALLY??? i mean REALLY!!!!! CRAPPY game REALLY??? compare to forza,Need for Speed "The RUN", NFS Shift 1,2,NFS PROSTREETS,NFS UNDERCOVER GT5 crappy? REALLY!!!
god man dragons dogma is a dissapointment? what the fuck is dude smokin some ready's. seriously one of the best games ive played.
Near insanity...unless he simple meant that each looked to b a possible game of the year and fell a bit short for one reason or another. He did not say this though. For some he simple tire them apart. I dunno, I can say Sky rim was a disappointment to me for various reasons. There are many aspects of dragons dogma and kingdoms that I love a lot more than sky rim, like their old school RPG elements that deliver satisfaction instead of a simple epic journey.
Now, I would love to see DD, KoA (which won't happen and I am sad) and DA look at some other games and try to make some improvements but not at the expense of all the wonderful things they did do. I love DD.
War in the North wasn't an amazing game, but I definitely had lots of fun playing spltscreen with my girlfriend. There were way worse disappointing games.
say what you want, but Shadows of the Damned is a GREAT GAME!
:)
This list needs:
Perfect Dark: zero
Golden axe: beast rider
Dragon's Dogma is everything it claimed to be and more, it's one of the most unique and complex action RPG's on the market, I really liked Amalur too but I thought it was way too easy. This is a dumb list, they've put great games on there for stupid reasons, Resonance of Fate was fantastic but the author has included it because of it's release date?
Innovative RPG's and quirky action games like Shadows of the Damned are a niche market, it's like comparing fans of Black Metal to fans of R'nB, some people are willing to expand their minds and be challenged, others aren't.
Resonance of Fate was indeed a fantastic game. Loved the combat system and soo many side-quests! Probably one of my fav. JRPGs this gen. The story was a lil' weak -- not very driven, but I think they wanted it that way. To let the player fit in the pieces together, but it's def. one of the most stragetic combat mechanics I've played this gen.
It def. was in no way a disappointment.
I tried to give the article some credit, but saying tri-Ace is a small time developer kinda destroyed that. They're not the biggest of the big, but between Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile, they're more than a little well known by JRPG fans.
Funny because resonance of fate was a hell of alot better jrpg than ff13 by a long shot.
The almost the entire list is stupid as hell cursed crusade, even a blind man could that was a budget title, alice was good and lengthy for action/platformer. War in the north was still a decent game not a champions of norrath, but still good. DD haven't played except the demo.
Da2 only played the demo was so so, shadows wasn't bad but all the innuendos put me off it, kingdoms was a shocker for how fun it actually was. I was expecting another casual heavy fable type game, it was actually real good. Amy never played it
The force unleashed wasn't not that bad, probably not as good as jk 3, but still an enjoyable game.
Another guy listed golden axe and i agree that was really bad. I don't care if it was hyped or not, and rogue warrior and legendary deserve to be on the list, just bad games.
I still laugh about brink, if it had released for $29 like it should of been instead $59 it wouldn't have been torn apart so badly.
Dead island i can't see the appeal, everything is subpar and poorly implemented, only the driving was done decently. I still think people who compare it to fallout 3 or borderlands are idiots.
Shadows of the Damned was rated very well. It is a fantastic game, idiots like the person who wrote this article didn't help move copies.
Blue Toad Mystery Files, it's the worse piece of arse dribble that I've ever had the misfortune to play.
In recent memory, I'd add Brink.
I still kinda liked the game, but it just wasn't anywhere near what was portrayed in the previews/trailers.
I fell for the trap that was Brink. The game looked absolutely incredible with the parkour, customization and objective based gameplay....but man, it was pretty bad. Still can't believe I wasted 64 dollars on that. It had so much potential, but didn't really follow through on any core element.
Yeah I'd take Dragon's Dogma and Amalur off and replace them with Brink and Dead Island. Both were games I was very excited about that ended up being less than stellar. The rest of the games I don't know about, but those two are actually the only disappointing games I've played this gen. I liked Amalur ok, but I had no expectations that it didn't live up to. I love me some Dragon's Dogma.
Dead Island wasn't too bad but the novelty wore off pretty quick for me because it was just constant combat and not much else, Brink was so broken on release that it never had a chance, if it was a $10 download and had been marketed the same way as Gotham City Impostors it would probably have been a minor hit.
Alice: Madness Returns was precisely what I was expecting from it. Same qualities, same flaws as American McGee's Alice: old school platform / action game with awesome level-design, good dubs but few bugs and rigid animations.
It's not the greatest game of all time, but it's still worth it. A really good experience and nothing like a disappointment for me.
Battlefield 3, every Call of Duty game after 4, Skyrim, Bioshock 2, and Splinter Cell Convition. I'm sure I could think of more if I wanted.
How can you call someone a hipster from a post? Was it the thickframe glasses and scraggly beard that gave it away?
You forgot Halo 3,ODST and Reach!
Conviction was pretty good and so was Battlefield 3 and BS2.
Bioshock 2 wasn't bad, just disappointing after the first one. It couldn't live up to its name. Battlefield 3 definitely deserves to be up there because it's horribly unstable (crashed ~80 times for me in the first 3 months I owned it) and the hit detection is awful. The maps in vanilla BF3 are mostly crap. There's 4 decent maps in vanilla.
@BraveToaster
I thought Bioshock 2 was well better than the first one, and I played the first one first too. But fair enough. Iv never had that many problems with Battlefield 3 but i`ll be the first to admit its not a 100% stable game, and trying to squad up is a pain in the ass. Also, whats with these bullshit "unlock all unlockables for vehicles and weapons" things you can buy online? so lame.
..............Splinter Cell Chaos Theory???????
That's one of the best stealth games of all time!
Yep. Chaos Theory is amazing. Plus it did come out this gen....
DRAGON DOGMA?????????? this guy is fokin crazy or doesn't know anything about gaming... what this game needs its more exposure not this broken stupid list that does not help this fantastic game that i hope becomes a franchise
What a stupid article
Wahh! This guy thinks a game that I think is fun is disappointing! He's not a real gamer for disagreeing with me!
Grow up.
Might want to choose a mature reply before saying grow up, doesn't mean much otherwise.
Because people who whine about stupid pointless shit like this need to be talked to in a nice kind and mature manner...
^
Must be the Hemorrhoids acting up!
Anyways i highly agree with you alessandro10!
seriously Dragon's Dogma??Have you even played it?? It's one of the best games I've played this generation.I don't understand why these type of articles gets approved cause I'm pretty sure that this list did not came from a proper gamer.
Yah, DD might not have the best story line of this gen, but the amount of control over customizing your play style is damn nice. You can switch between the roles at any time (in town) and not have to start a new character. You can mix and match abilities and augments. The amount of choices during quests you have is nice as well.
Though one thing to note: for the love of god, do not get the inn keeper to fall in love with you...
Dragons Dogma is on the list..
are you mad?
There are many many games that couldve been there. This gen has had many stinkers. Hell, I'd throw a few sequels in there, cuz after this gen I want some new damn I.P's !!
Sigh
Although a few of those games on the list genuinely did not live up to expectations & exercise its potential, I think @ least 8 of those games were fairly decent, no less than good.
But definitely not the MOST disappointing. & definitely not the most disappointing of this gen.
The only game I can agree with, mostly, is Dragon Age 2.
THAT, was disappointing!
I hated resonance of fate. 60 hours in and the story was barely gatting started. Got sick of looking at hexagons.
"Dragos Age: Origins is one of the finest RPGs ever made. Epic in scope, it delivered a hugely interesting world, some amazing characters and a combat intensity that managed to still be highly strategic."
'Dragos Age: Origins'? never heard of it.
Guy's probs never played any infinity engine game.
I liked Crysis 2 and Resident Evil 5. RE5 brought me into the RE series so laugh it up. :P
If re 5 brought you into the re series you need to play the originals re 1-3, completely different.
@madjedi I tried all three and I didn't enjoyed the first three. It was the co-op that made me consider buying RE5 and I thought the co-op in that game was pretty good.
Terrible list. Looks like i will be on the lookout not to go to this website again..
My 3 have to be :
1. HAZE
2. Lair
3. GTA4 (sorry guys it was a real letdown)
4. Twisted Metal
5. Warhawk
I agree with most, but the whole "GTA IV sucks because it's not San Andreas" thing is getting old.
Really, Warhawk? GTFO!
That was easily the most fun I've had in multiplayer on the PS3, complete with dedicated servers. An overall masterpiece of online fun, chaos, and teamwork.
because the people that didnt play it didnt like it. I had a blast with it.
Oh man Lair was a fantastic game. I loved it soooo much. I didnt even realized it was getting bad reviews until my friend let me know. I thought the controls werent that bad. And the story was decent. Then again to each Their own.
With a list like that this guy probably has his bangs pasted to his forehead and his jeans so tight he has to cut them at the ankles just to get them off.
Off topic. Growing up in the ninetys Axel was my fqvorite character for a while and I remember writing stories about him in my free writes in 3rd grade. lol.
This list a joke. The author must be mistaken...he/she must of added random games to the list in order to meet a deadline. Fail sir!!
Dragon Age 2 is the biggest disappointment in any gen. It signified the end of Bioware and the beginning of EA Bioware. Dragon Age 2 also marked the beginning of the "dumb it down" era.
CoD2k8-2k12
Medal of Honor- was once a unique franchise. Now, it's a big old shit sandwich and basically another excuse to pump out Battlefield Lite.
Fable 2 and 3- both terrible, although 3 was expected to be terrible.
Crackdown 2- Man, are you kidding me?
Sorcery- For a game that disappeared for 2 years...they sure as hell cut every possible corner to get this garbage out. This game should have been Epic...but I'd settle for good.
Author's list is pretty bad. Shadows was a solid game and Amalur kicked ass for 35 levels...
Sorcery was NEVER going to be epic. I've been saying that for years. It was just a tech demo that a bunch of E3 followers got way too excited over...
So you guessed that the demo we saw 2 years ago looks exactly like the final product? You expected them to use UE3?
Sure you did...
No: we saw a tech demo, not a game. It's as simple as that.
Some people got way too excited and then had unreasonable expectations.
As for the game itself, I've been playing it today for the first time and it's better than I thought it would be. Enjoying it. Could definitely have done with a bit more polish though.
wow, troll list is a troll list.
Amalur and Dragon's Dogma are amazing games.
i know its based off opinion, but he chose legit good games.
Too Human, Haze, Crackdown 2, GT5, FF13, Twisted Metal and Ninja Gaiden 3 to name a few.
It's hard to say a lot about a game you haven't played, let alone seen more than 5 minutes of gameplay.
resident evil 5 and soon Resident Evil 6, along FF XIII and XIII-2, both franchises dead to me.
1. Resident Evil 5(not scary)
2. Final Fantasy XIII(dull emo linear RPG)
3. Mass Effect 3(lame ending to a great series
4. Sonic the Hedgehog(terrible broken game
5. Prince of Persia(mediocre entry in a classic series).
Stick with good AAA exclusive games and you can rarely go wrong. Multi-platform games are hit and miss regardless of their quality.
Nonsense, the most disappointing games so far have been AAA games.
Stick with genres you like and avoid the hype, thats how you avoid disappointment. Judge a game on how good it really is and not on what you perceived it would be.
Seems to me as if the author has something against RPGs hey? lol
I agree with some comments above, it's pretty stupid to put good games in for reasons such as release dates or the fact reviews were good, not great.
For games such as Duke Nukem Forever or Too Human not to make this list is astounding.
I'd also add any main Silent Hill game since SH3, as they've been lacking since.
Disappointing doesnt mean bad, it means a game that was really hyped and didnt deliver and most of these dont reach that criteria.
FF13
GT5 (at first)
Gears of War 3
Duke Nukem
Halo ODST
Fable 2 and 3
These games should be on the list. THEY ARE NOT BAD (besides duke). They were just disappointments due to hype. Thats very different.
Dragons Dogma is really weird on that list...
Some of my biggest disappointments this gen include:
-Resident Evil 5
-Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I
-Gran Turismo 5
-Dead Island
-Saints Row: The Third
-Crackdown 2
-Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
-MAG
I made an account entirely to say that this list is so terrible it hurts my eyes. Many of the games on the list are actually good. Forget about even adding FFXIII as some people still enjoyed it. Games like FFXIV should be on a list like this. Games that are so bad people tried to erase them from their memory. The fact that SOTD and a few others are on here makes me think this person is the type that gets a brooding vengeful hate for someone if the burger they ordered only has 1 pickle instead of 2.
I had a bunch of these on my TO BUY LIST and the reason I felt gaming wasnt dead.......lmao
whoever made this article is misleading people, dragon's dogma are great games, maybe the author sucked so much at the game that he thought it was bad, and kingdoms of amalur was a good game, not all disappointing, it introduced a new world, i actually was interested in all the lore, anyways, dragon's dogma and kingdoms shud not be on this list, and i kinda liked too human, the story was amazing if you understood it, and knew about asgardian lore. personal opinion, to everyone their own, i guess.
LOL. Dragon's Dogma doesn't deserve to be on here, Neither does Amalur. Amalur wasn't a failure, but the company was.
Shadows of the Damned was actually good and Lord of the Rings WitN was actually one of the more solid LotR titles this gen (fun co-op)
Dukem Nukem Forever
Ninja Gaiden 3
Resident Evil 5
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City
Too Human
Dragon Age 2
crysis 2
FF13
Bugfield 3
Splinter Cell Conviction
diablo 3
Once I saw the Dragon's Dogma picture for the article "Top ten most disappointing games" on N4G, it made sense why it was the most viewed topic currently on the site...
Only games I would disagree with is Dragon's Dogma and Resonance of Fate being on that list. Others I either didn't like or didn't play.
Dragon's Dogma is one of the *BEST* games of this gen - and hence has no right at all being anywhere near this list.
Now I finally get the idea behind the picture of Dragon's Dogma being on the article. He knows a lot of people love Dragon's Dogma and when they see their loved game on the list of Top 10 most disappointing they're obviously gonna click it . That's why he has put down Dragon's Dogma on the list. This guy probably is a fox.
From what Ive played.
1: Dragon Age 2
Self explainatory. sucky, buggy, lazy boring shit.
Supposedly a sequel to the critically acclaimed DA: origins.
2: HAZE
So much for all the hype and the big words from Free radical.
Wiritng/acting were very mediocre. And I couldnt stand the feel of the gameplay one bit. Movement/aiming... there was no feel or depth to it.
3: Mass effect 2 (Ps3)
I love the game, I got it for ps3 and Ill say it again I love this game. why is it my nr 3?
Because it was unplayable problem highlights were: audio glitches where audio and audio effects just muted, several slow downs and froze my ps3 3 times in 10 hours of gameplay. Stopped playing it, cause its not doing me any justice or my ps3 any good. So much for the definitive version of Mass effect 2!
I do not know if Bioware have fixed these problems by now to an extent where I can sit down and enjoy it without worrying about loosing progress, experience breaking bugs like the Audio glitches and killing my ps3 for freezing up every 2 hours. But let me know if they have.
4: Brütal Legend
Its not a horrible game, but It felt like I had bought a game that wasnt half way finnished. Lacks a lot of polish and Audio quality was BAD.
5: Resistance 3
Its not a bad game, but my list contains games that I had hope for that I were excited about.
And this certainly fell short of my expectations.
The games visuals... wtf happened? I can see typical compression and low res render like artifacts all over my screen...
low res textures everywhere, clipping. Dumb enemies, Insomniac made it sound much better on paper. Only thing that was suprisingly good technically as far as I can remember was lighting and particles.
The game felt rushed to me, and would have nbenefitted from some more developement time.
http://nextgengamingblog.co...
http://gamessling.com/wp-co...
I don't know what Insomniac was thinking but the game looks pretty much like these screenshots. Imagine them blown up on a 1080p 42"
The screen becomes one mess of Aliasing artifacts and thats sad because the previous Resistance games were sharp looking and felt more polished.
I feel Like Im getting a million disagrees now for including Resistance 3 and prolly ME2, but R3 it just fell short. I do not hate the game and its not bad.
And ME2 just didn't work properly on ps3 at least around Launch and it was Heartbreaking since I loved the characters and universe so much. The gameplay and core experience of the game is superb.
Alice the Madness Returns is on so many "best games you never played" lists..
Im not sure how this game made his list. I thought it was great = )
You know what the worst part is? We all agree this article is shit but we can't report it or disagree with it. All we can do is say it's shit here, and N4Gs system somehow deems the article as MORE POPULAR because of that.
This site seriously needs some amount of user feedback to submissions.
You can rate the story. If you click the sites name below the "Read Full Story" link you'll get the option to rate both the story and website. You can also report it by clicking the cogwheels on the thumbnail, but there's not really anything wrong with this article. It's just an opinion piece which is bound to get disagrees.
How can a game be bad because it released the same day as FFXIII? That's just preposterous!
Guys Amalur wasn't bad but it wasn't mind blowning. I bought it day 1 and it was wayyyyyyyyyy too easy, it did have a stealth element which I loved but the rest was fableish.
Couple of games on there that should'nt be e.g. Shadows of the Damned and Alice: Madness Returns.
There are much worse games out there than most on this list, guess it got the hits they were after though :/
There is nothing to except anymore from FF and Resident Evil Series..both franchises gave what they have to give! From now on Final Fantasy series aren't RPGs anymore but MMOs and Resident Evils from Survival/Horror transformed to Action-Adventure/Shooting..
this list should have. DUke nukem, lair( that dragon game that came out ps3), FFXIII, crysis, Twisted Metal, and oh so many more, but in any generation of gaming the bad always out weigh the good
This list feels more like games the author doesn't like much or was bad at; not games that were disappointing.
Other than Dragon Age did anyone have such great hope for the rest of these games that you would be dissappointed in them?
Whoever wrote this is a moron. Resonance of Fate is one of the best JRPG this generation. It might not sell well, but it still one of the best and definitely not a dissapointment.
I'm playing Dragon Dogma now, and I enjoy it very much but it is not for everyone. BUT That doesn't meant the game is a dissapointment.
LOL Dragon Age 2. He got that right. Those who who like this sequel don't have anything to be afraid of in the future, I guess, since they plan to wider their audiences for future games (da2 is the product of strategy, and so me3). But those who didn't like it, beware with its sequel....
Blood Stone wasn't that bad. I thought the multiplayer was worse than quantum of solace but single player was still enjoyable.
