Xbox One controllers are compatible with PC despite rumors to the contrary, says Penello

Despite earlier claims that Xbox One controllers would be incompatible with Windows PC, Microsoft's director of product management Albert Penello confirmed the controllers will work with Windows PC games.

Wait if you have to create NEW DRIVERS... for your controller to work and be "compatible" to the PC then your controller ISN'T COMPATIBLE... the eff?? then he said "when they are available.." ok soooo when you fix your sh** Microsoft that's WHEN it's compatible don't say "they are" when they aren't at the present moment in life.

They are twisting his words. He never said they ARE compatible, he said they will be. He was addressing the conspiracy theory that MS had no plans to release drivers because they would rather folks have to buy another controller for use with their PC.

If MS want some more money, they should put out the drivers, ASAP. I think installing a PS4 controller is supposedly much easier than a PS3 controller.

Sony should have had drivers ready too, and if they do now, I stand corrected here.

All anyone needs to know, its not compatible now but it will be in the future and no new hardware will be needed. existing will work:

They should just release the wireless dongle/hub to sync our controllers to. The windows 360 wireless unit is a beaut. Sync up to 4 controllers to the hub.

If a driver doesn't exist to make it functional, it is a bit of a stretch to call it compatible. It would be more accurate to say that it will "become compatible" in the future. The headline reads "Xbox One controllers are compatible with PC..."

....doesn't work. This definition is so broad, technically everything with a USB port is compatible with PC given that a driver can be written to make it compatible at some unspecified point in time. By this definition even the PS3 controller is "compatible" with PC.

The problem is a poor headline from polygon, not an innaccurate comment. The Neogaf insider claimed MS had no intention of releasing drivers, suggesting MS saw it more profitable to only sell a PC exclusive version of the controller. Panello responded by saying they will release drivers. He never said the controller IS currently compatible, just that it will be in the future.

Agreed. Polygon did a number on that headline. The inside never claimed that PC compatibility was impossible.

On a side note, reports that modders, hackers and devs have made or released their own drivers probably exacerbated the story. There is no reason Microsoft can't release a driver if they want to.

Microsoft DOES want to release drivers. But unlike those hackers,modders, and devs, Microsoft has the responsibility to make sure the drivers work flawlessly, across all titles and several supported windows platforms. For this reason, you see unofficial releases beat official releases to market all the time. It's not about pushing the xb1. It's about Quality Assurance.
