Can These Three Dragon Ball Games Take The Franchise To A New Level?

Masoud of DualShockers writes:

"Recently I looked at a few reasons the Dragon Ball mega-franchise needed to get itself back on track by offering something truly new and unique for fans to get excited about again. That made me think: what kind of games would I like to see that haven’t been done before?

There’s been a few different approaches to Dragon Ball games in the past, including RPGs and adventure games, but still, those come fairly infrequently, lost in obscurity to the dozen or so formulaic fighting games that have come out and rehashed the same familiar story that fans have been reliving for three decades now. So why not do something completely new?"

Give me Budokai Tenkaichi 3 HD for PS4/Vita and I'll be so happy.

LEGENDS, my fav DBZ game of all-time. PSOne or Saturn don't matter but Saturn version was a bit better. They should throw the infamous 3 together, Legends Untimate Battle 22 and Final Bout. Back in the 90's that all we had unless we back tracked to SNES or Genesis and imported.

I'm surprised they didn't do a Budokai Tenkaichi HD Collection like they did for Budokai. I was waiting for it. I guess there's still time!

I wish they made a good rpg. I remember on the snes they had Legend of the Super Saiyan which I really enjoyed. I just wish if they made one they wouldn't go for the cash grab by making 3 games for each major story arc and just made one epic game.

chaos_mechanica1713d ago

Exactly. If they did a RPG, I'd probably want a new story, because the easy formula for milking the DB franchise is retelling the same stories over and over again, bit by bit.

I would like a Dragon Ball game. Imagine Kid Goku flying around on the nimbus cloud and fighting the RRA.

Or I would like to see a game about Vegeta but Batman Arkham style. I think that would be really cool.

chaos_mechanica1713d ago

I love the first idea for the idea of exploring an open world with the Nimbus. Awesome. And dropping in on certain towns where the RRA are causing trouble would be great.

The second idea would be awesome to be with Bardock. Like, if they expanded and tweaked the idea that he was starting to see holes in Frieza's leadership of the Saiyans, and little by little started investigating and exploring the planets and space ports they're hired to destroy. Then after he gets his psychic powers, he begins to hunt down Frieza's elite, just before attempting a coup.

Reboot the franchise with new characters and story. They have milked everything bone dry

Heads would roll and blood would spill.

chaos_mechanica1713d ago

It could work. Like FlameWater said, it's worked for Gundam. Either a reboot, or just continue on into a new era that takes place after the series. Or, hell, before. Anything is possible.

Just don't center it super saiyan forms and blasting tug-o-wars.

If the games actually give great gameplay mechanics and cool intense fighting the DBZ games can still have a future.

chaos_mechanica1713d ago

Agreed. But one of the things most annoying to me is that no matter how fun the gameplay is, we're still retreading the same stories over and over and over again for decades. I want new gameplay and a new narrative to enjoy. It might even make the combat mechanics easier to implement and tweak if they introduce some fresh ideas and concepts.
