The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One aren’t ‘doomed,’ despite sales figures

In the midst of the hysteria that has resulted from a near simultaneous launch of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, fans and the press alike have been more concerned with which company has the competitive edge than how the market is behaving as a whole. Natasha Lomas published her own analysis on TechCrunch earlier this week, showing the vast disparity between console sales in January 2007 and January 2014. In January 2007, around 2 million game consoles were sold. In January 2014, that number was closer to 700,000.

Well to even infer that the PS4 is doomed is unjustified. The PS4 is selling out as soon as retailers get them. Selling like hot cakes. Already over 6 million sold and it only released in November. One of the best console launches in history and showing no signs of slowing.

It's all about profits... and it's not like the big 3 are making much money off their newly touted systems these days.

Both consoles are doing fine. Obviously the PS4 is doing better but the Xbox One is hardly floundering. The Wii U is in trouble for sure, but we already knew that.

The internet has become so doom and gloom recently, full of haters.

Wii U is fine. It is selling the same as Xbox so it must be fine too.

An anti-doom and gloom article? Odd...

People want PS4 more than Xbox but PS4 is hard to find so of course sales for January would be down for consols.

People want the PS4 solely because of the hype. Not only does the X1 have more exclusives currently out than the PS4, they're also higher rated. So how does one explain this when it comes to hardware sales? Well, the only obvious explanation is hype.

Currently on X1: Titanfall, Crimson Dragon, Forza 5, Ryse, Killer Instint and D3. I'm sure that I'm forgetting a couple here.

Currently on PS4: Resogun, KZ and Knack.

MS has invested a lot of $$$ into game development this time around. The old argument that Sony has the best and most exclusives will soon be a distant memory.
