What do you think really makes a video game epic? Story? Gameplay? Graphics? A combination of all of them? What is PlayStation 4 discusses what makes a game epic by revisiting past gaming moments.
Modern game length makes it hard for anything to be "epic", in my opinion. The classic Final Fantasy games were epic, because you were playing for 30-70 hours. You had time to really get to know the characters, and watch them evolve (both story-wise, and in terms of strength through level ups and customization). The classic Final Fantasy games nailed the "3 pillars". They had great gameplay, great visuals, and great stories. I'd add a 4th pillar. They had great music, too.
