Microsoft Pins Xbox One Hopes on Titanfall, a Sci-Fi Shooting Game

NY Times "Now those Microsoft bosses hope the game, Titanfall, will win over enough consumers to pump up sales of Xbox One, the company’s flagship gaming console. Xbox One sales are trailing those of a machine from Sony, Microsoft’s main rival."

The story is too old to be commented.
Kingthrash3601373d ago

i think tf is an awsome game and the massive hype will sell the game...but imo wont boost x1 sales.
if it was exclusive it definatly would show a nice hit (kinda like pikmin did for the wiiu) but its on pc and 360 who's install base is huge in comparison, that alone will hurt x1 sales. like it or not...i see no gap closing because iss is releasing. its a fun time for all gamers a great month no matter what system you own...the only ones who are having a nail biting time is ms.

Spurg1373d ago

Titanfall on X1 is a perfect excuse for people to ditch the 360 and get a X1.
Titanfall isn't being advertised for 360 or PC as much as on X1.

curtis921373d ago

Except... it's on 360 as well. And sounds like virtually the same experience. It's also on PC. This is where having your own studio developing a game comes in handy. It allows for ACTUAL exclusives.

SG1_dapunisherX1373d ago

why you wanna play a weak version of tf on 360 lmao... Me I'm getting on xbox one

Spurg1373d ago

"And sounds like virtually the same experience."
Its the same game ....the experience will be the same even if they are running at different resolutions.

"It's also on PC. This is where having your own studio developing a game comes in handy. It allows for ACTUAL exclusives."

Titanfall is an X1 title...running around bitching and moaning why its only Ms platforms is ridiculous...it clearly shows how butthurt you actually are.

Pogmathoin1373d ago

The amount of people saying TF will not sell systems, yet Infamous, which has been a great game, but no system seller, will shift many more PS4's which are still hard to get..... Wonderful logic again....

DarkZane1373d ago

@Pogmathoin

Because Infamous is PS4 exclusive, while Titanfall is releasing on 3 platforms.

Also, most people wouldn't spend 500$ for one game, so they'd either get it on PC or 360.

Also, the preorders for Infamous are higher than Titanfall's X1 preorders. Also, pretty sure infamous PS4 bundle is outselling the Titanfall X1 bundle as well.

Waffles111373d ago

...or you could spend 400 on a decent video card and get a better version on the PC instead. They should have kept the game exclusive to Xbox One. Instead, I now have either the option to play it cheaper (xbox 360), or play it better (PC).

jgrigs091373d ago

Why is it such a big deal for people to buy it on Xbox One. Don't pull the, oh they can build a PC for that price. HELLO some people don't know how to build PC's. Good god some people blow my mind

miyamoto1373d ago

I love the mecha genre to death even if its a niche genre.

creatchee1373d ago (Edited 1373d ago )

@curtis92

"Except... it's on 360 as well. And sounds like virtually the same experience. It's also on PC. This is where having your own studio developing a game comes in handy. It allows for ACTUAL exclusives."

Here's the thing... There are about 80 million Xbox 360's and 80 million PS3's out there (disregarding hardware failure - let's not broach that subject, please). So far, X1 has sold about 3.5 million and PS4 about 6 million. That means that over 100 million (adjusting for multi-console owners and the dreaded hardware failure subject we won't bring up) people have not upgraded at this point.

Maybe those people need a game to upgrade for. Or maybe their friends already went next-gen and they wanted to get something that they would play together. Or whatever reasons that people upgrade. The point is, there are plenty of people out there that are interested in upgrading already, so if a game looks plenty good and is on a next-gen console, there is a chance that they'll say "why not, let's do it" and go next gen, even if they could buy the old gen version.

zeuanimals1373d ago (Edited 1373d ago )

I agree wirh Curtis. MS put so much money into advertising Titanfall, nevermind buying the exclusive rights to it. That money could have went to another MS exclusive, a real exclusive, not a 3rd party exclusive that's available on 2 other systems. That would mean everyone would have Titanfall to look forward to and Xbox One owners would have that other exclusive MS could have funded, instead we get one game.

What would you guys rather want? One or two games? Sure one of those games would be available on many other platforms, but as it is, it's already available on more than one platform. We could've gotten an entirely different experience if MS didn't spend so much moneyhatting. Sure, you can say MS still has money to fund a ton of exclusives, but that's what they should be doing with all/most of the money that went into advertising and buying Titanfall.

Rare, once a great name in the gaming industry, could have used that money to hire great devs who've recently lost their jobs at places like Sony Santa Monica and many other places and they could've been allowed to create a new Banjo, Conkers, or Perfect Dark. Instead, Titanfall, Titanfall, Titanfall.

There's an article posted right now that says Titanfall moved 1 million+ xbox one's according to reports. So no based off of that your wrong.

numNuts1373d ago

And so's the article. they based it off MS predictions.

djplonker1373d ago

@sg1_dapunisher

why do you wanna play a weak version on titanfall on the xbone lmao... I won't be buying the superior pc version because origin...

HugoDrax1373d ago

Superior could mean a lot of things....

1) Superior resolution? Sure PC
2) Superior servers (Origin or Azure)? XBOX with Azure, we know how EA servers perform lol.
3) Community? PC or XBOX, depends on your preference

I have 3 options and I still chose to buy it for my xbox one, and you can check my comment history. I posted my superior PC rig a while ago

Allsystemgamer1373d ago

@hugo

You do know the PC version uses azure right?....same with the 360 version...

Geoff9001373d ago

MS make money regardless of which platform you buy Titanfall on, you buy a copy of TF on the 360 they make money, you buy a 360 they make money, you buy a new copy of Windows/ or PC they make money get the picture?

The Xbox One isn't even comparable to the Wii U, the Xbox One has only had three months, not a long time in anyone's mind.

However Titanfall will sell consoles, just like Halo, Mass Effect, Gears, years prior to this.

MS like Sony aren't in this for the short term, they are in it for the long term.

SG1_dapunisherX1373d ago

ms was smart for that. you need window, 360, & xbone to play tf if you don't have that tough luck lol.

zeuanimals1373d ago

Buy a new copy of Windows? Isn't that sort of reaching? Most people have Win 7 by now and you only need Win 7 to play it. Why would anyone with Win 7 update their OS just to play a game that doesn't require Win 8? Sure, buying a new PC or upgrading the OS at all would give MS the money, but most people won't be doing any of that just for Titanfall.

And OS/PC/360 sales aren't as crucial as X1 hardware sales and that's what MS is hoping to boost with Titanfall. If it fails to move as many systems as MS hopes, they're screwed until Halo 5 or whatever they're hoping to be their next system seller.

pornflakes1373d ago

Titanfall already pushed sales to 1 Million units for the xONE

They quite literally are, and that seems to have transferred over to the fans of the console, who are doing the same thing. MS outsourced some developers to meet the launch deadline - many games that were supposed to be for the 360. Then.. crazy hype Titanfall for March.

But looking at the immediate future, MS offers pretty much nothing else. There's Kinect Sports Rivals in April... and then..........................

.....Nothing else is confirmed, except a dry spell.

-----------

@ Lawboy2

That is the point I'm making. What I'm showing is that when we hear all of those people saying Xbone has the better lineup and better games to come in 2014, it really was a load of hot air.

PS4 had more launch games, currently has more games, more exclusives, and more in the immediate future.

Lawboy21373d ago

same for ps4...we had
resogun
knack
killzone at launch

infamous in march...

supposedly coming soon
MLB the show
PS2
Drive Club
FF

xbox one at launch
DR3
Ryse
Forza 5
Zoo Tycoon

in feburary
Plants v Zombies

In march
Titanfall

supposed to come soon
D4
Project Spark
Kinect Sports rivals

so its even btw the two with what we know..mnd you half of these games on both sides have no release date and e3 is around th corner where were bound to here about more games

Spurg1373d ago

"But looking at the immediate future, MS offers pretty much nothing else. There's Kinect Sports Rivals in April... and then.......................... "

They will announce the release dates for Halo, Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break and Fable Legends at E3...you can bet at least 2 -3 of those titles are for later this year.

Don't act like Ms has nothing to show

DigitalRaptor1373d ago (Edited 1373d ago )

I'm NOT saying they don't have anything to reveal.

I'm saying that those idiots parroting "hahah I guess greatness truly awaits", "XB1 has more games" etc, etc. really had no points. Because despite what history has shown us they have consistently decided to ignore that, and use short-term logic, which is why we're in this situation right now, where I'm talking about this.

PS4 may not have had as many launch games, because Sony decided not to starve their PS3 fans of games like The Last of Us, Puppeteer, Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, God of War: Ascension etc etc etc etc.

But they only had about 2 less exclusive launch games than MS, and for legitimate reasons (not because they rushed out games for launch and starved their audience because of it).

And now, PS4 is showing that it is getting more games, especially in the immediate future, and in the long-term. My point was to make those people feel foolish, because that attitude is.

------

"They will announce the release dates for Halo, Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break and Fable Legends at E3...you can bet at least 2 -3 of those titles are for later this year."

Halo 5 is a 2015 title. Halo 2 anniversary is probably what you're looking at for Holiday 2014.

We've seen and heard nothing about Sunset Overdrive other than a CG trailer at last year's E3. This will probably slip into 2015, unless they show a substantial demo at E3. Then again, this is Insomniac we're talking about.

Quantum Break is similar to the above, except we've seen more about it. It will probably be released around the same time as The Order: 1886, and this game looks pretty nice. I'm expecting a fully-fledged impressive demo at E3.

Fable Legends is having its beta on Xbone this year. It's more likely an early 2015 title.

RollinThunder1373d ago

Before I start researching; what is SO? Quantum Break will be Order-esque(tps cover, trade history artsy for bullet time/live action artsy.) We know Halo is Halo which will sell and probably be my reason to purchase unless I get completely swamped by Destiny. Not sure about Fable Legends. It seems pretty close, minus indies which can change things dramatically.

Spurg1373d ago (Edited 1373d ago )

@DigitalRaptor
"But they only had about 2 less exclusive launch games than MS, and for legitimate reasons (not because they rushed out games for launch and starved their audience because of it)."

Sorry but them rushing out games has nothing to do with anything. Apart from Ryse the rest of the launch exclusive has been well received...how does well received game show the sign of being rushed.
Ryse was already announced in 2012 that it would skip the 360 for next gen.

"Halo 5 is a 2015 title. Halo 2 anniversary is probably what you're looking at for Holiday 2014."

Its not officially confirmed...although it makes perfect sense to release Halo 2 anniversary due to it actually being its 10 year anniversary...its a small game whats stopping it from being released with Halo 5. 343i is a pretty big team.

"We've seen and heard nothing about Sunset Overdrive other than a CG trailer at last year's E3. This will probably slip into 2015, unless they show a substantial demo at E3. Then again, this is Insomniac we're talking about."

They should aim for 2014 release...they have been consistent with yearly releases throughout the last few years. Why would they skip 2014 all of a sudden.

-2011:
Resistance 3
Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One

-2012:
Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault

-2013
Fuse
Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus

-2014
Sunset overdrive???

"Fable Legends is having its beta on Xbone this year. It's more likely an early 2015 title."

What's your source???...beta this year???...why not beta and release this year.
This one may slip to 2015...Fable anniversary came out this year.

@RollinThunder
"Before I start researching; what is SO?"
You're not in touch with gaming...you should probably get off this board....looool

kratoz12091373d ago (Edited 1373d ago )

Well isn't this the only Major XBOX game coming this year?

Meanwhile Playstation is getting
Final Fantasy 10HD
KH 2.5
Infamous SS
The Order
Planetside 2
DriveClub
Dynasty Warriors(still a fun game)
Final Fantasy 14

Grave1373d ago (Edited 1373d ago )

Another big one on PS4 is War Thunder ... if it comes out this year :-)

jgrigs091373d ago

Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, Project Spark, Halo 2(probable). Halo 5(probable), Fable Legends, D4. Then Titanfall

ShadowKingx1373d ago (Edited 1373d ago )

cannot forget WARFRAME on PS4, which has kept me occupied thus far. really great coop game IMO

but i personally dont like titanfall and one game is not going to make me spend 500 bucks. 500 bucks is alot to people this day in age. dont get me wrong, i will eventually get a Xbone but not for titanfall ATM.

glennhkboy1373d ago

Let's compare the current straggle of XBone to the 1st year straggle of PS3. It was not any game, exclusive or multi-platform, that turn PS3 around. It was the hardware improvement + lowering the price + improvement on games performance.

These are the same steps that XBone need to take, in order to survive.

Jeff2571373d ago

Sony also had more 1st party studios than what Microsoft had to really push the PS3 hardware. While many multiplats still didn't perform as well as the 360 versions later in life on the PS3 the fact that Sony could rely on the 1st party studios is what allowed them to catch up and then pass the 360. Microsoft has not really worked to develop enough 1st party studios to help push XBOX One. Instead they look like they will be content to try the same strategy that worked last gen without realizing it will not work the same way now.
