RUMOR: Yu Suzuki May Consider Crowdfunding for Shenmue 3

If there is one game Sega fans have been harping for over the years, it’s a new entry in the open-world Shenmue franchise. However, Sega is hardly in the financial position to fund such an ambitious project, and as such, a project of this scale just hasn’t been in the cards. However, if a series of tweets are to be believed, Yu Suzuki, the creator of the franchise, may be considering using something along the lines of Kickstarter to fund it.

I would pledge double the retail price of new games to make this see the light of day. I can only imagine Shenmue coming up in this day and age, oh my mind would explode

im sorry but you would support a BIG publisher to help them create a game that has a definite demand? i feel like this is taking it too far and should not be supported at all!!!!! big companies cannot go to kickstarter! they have the resources, they see clear demand for the product, yet they will nickle and dime you to help fund the project then sell it to you at full retail!?!?! cmon really?

What about the trademark Shenmue in the USA, didn´t Sega forget to update it? How does that work, thought they had lost the rights.

Yeah, and then Sony released a teaser trailer (commercial) in Japan and had Ryu H. all through it like within that next week. I guess we'll have to wait and see how the story of Shenmue unfolds :(

A possibility to fund a dream would be awesome!! I'd throw triple the retail price at least. This game needs to happen!!! But I guess that magazine exclusive isn't gonna be shenmue 3...so who knows what else would be so big?

well, just as long as it isn't an impossible goal. Didn't it cost 50 million dollars to make Shenmue?

Yu Suzuki has stated that the figure given by sega was a lie. Was about 47 million

I don't really thing a game like Shenmue now days would cost as much as people may think.

Shenmue 2 cost $70 Million and that was a dreamcast game

By today standards Shenmue 3 will cost $90M+
i hope i'm wrong tho..

Could a third installment in the franchise cost $90 million? Sure, it could cost significantly more than that. But it doesn't have to. The first thing they need to do is pick a third party engine to run the game. Sega was notorious for refusing to use third party engines during the Saturn and dreamcast days. As a first party studio that's normal, you normally retain the most powerful development kits for yourself to make your games shine brighter than anyone else's, but Sega is no longer a first party. The money saved not developing their own engine would be huge. Also, at this point, they could easily make this game a last gen title, still leaps and bounds beyond the first two games in quality, and immediately have a huge potential install base. Most fans would be satisfied, the game would be cheaper than a full fledged next gen title, and they could release an xbox live/psn version running in 1080p/60fps for those of us that have moved into the next gen consoles already. Either way, if shenmue 3 ever happens, I'll buy it day one.

I bet if Yu Suzuki put Shenmue on kick starter it would do very well.
