Thief Review | CraveOnline

CraveOnline: "Reboots of popular franchises have become commonplace during the past few years. In most cases, these games are thoughtfully introduced games like Tomb Raider to the modern era of gaming. Eidos Montreal tackled one of these projects successfully with Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Sure, some of the Deus Ex flavor was lost during translation, but it delivered enough of its own to substantiate itself.

Eidos Montreal thought it'd be a good idea to do the same for Thief, one of the stealth genre's most prestigious franchises. It sounded like a good idea at the time, but instead of showing what the series can be like on new hardware, it shows just how good the other games were."

So it didn't pay off going back to the thief roots?

I'm sorry to say, I kind of saw this coming. The problem is, by going back to their roots, they end up rehashing old gameplay thats been done over and over again in the past 20 years, in other franchises, better than the original could have imagined.

It's just a shame that they couldn't have gone back and added to the already great formula that the original provided. Made it fresh and new and feel like something that no other game has accomplished. I remember firing up the original on my PC back in the day and I was entrenched in that story and gameplay. But, when I watched the videos in the fall, I saw the exact same game with the exact same gameplay with better visuals.

It's on its way from gamefly and I wouldn't be surprised if I end up liking it. But just not as much as I would had they tried something new with the gameplay. Allow gamers to steal and use weapons, if they wanted to. Let them play the way they want to... not the way the developer forces them to.

I guess we will see when the game arrives this week sometime. I'm not expecting much though.
