The Best Portrayals of Minorities in Gaming in 2013

Muaz from Twinfinite writes: "Not surprisingly, when I was brainstorming this piece, it took me a while to think of more than one or two characters to put on this list. I reached out to my coworkers and even with a big group of us thinking, we couldn’t really name that many prominent characters that were minorities. It seems like every time I write a list like this, I get a bunch of responses claiming that in fact, white people are the minority and I’m talking out of my ass. So, before I go any further, I wanted to precisely define what I meant by minorities: in this piece (and for most people in America) a minority is someone not of European/Caucasian decent." Excellent! More articles like this, please. You just convinced me to get the Freedom Cry DLC, BTW.

On a similar note ever notice how minority characters (recently) are always best portrayed during the Apocolypse? Just look at the Walking Dead. The minority characters are awesome because they are just normal people trying to survive. Minorities are even well portrayed in the Telltale Games Walking Dead... why didn't you include Clementine and Lee!!!!?

Those are great characters, but I think the focus was on games released in 2013.

im getting a little tired of these articles that dont seem to think hard enough about what is really happening . if we want to see more racial diversity in games then those communities need to get involved in the creation process, namely in the story driven aspects. its far too easy to point the finger at the bad examples which there are many examples of, but its another thing completely to CREATE good examples. And if these communities dont get involved then they probably dont take too much interest in being represented in videogames, which is fine because games are still not taken seriously as a seriouas medium , and why would it when stuff like angry birds is being consumed the most?

these racial championing wrieters never seem to take in the whole picture. They just seem to write enough to look evolved when they just come off short sighted

ROFL @ If you don't like Keith David, I don't like you!!! Priceless!!! I actually really enjoyed Franklin as a character too. Even when he was in the hood and surrounded by "friends" that were of that typical stereotype, he managed to "tip-toe" around being just that and prove that he was indeed a stronger character. As for the Cry Freedom DLC, it is intriguing because this sows the seeds that eventually start the Haitian Revolution.
