Shane Kim: Xbox 360 Has Best Exclusive Content

As Microsoft's senior vice president of Microsoft Game Studios, Shane Kim is quick to point out that the gaming industry is "a hits-drive business." With one look at Microsoft Game Studios' upcoming lineup, it's easy to see that the first-party publisher is playing it safe, relying heavily on new installments in tried-and-true franchises.

Sequels were in abundance at Microsoft Game Studios' Spring Showcase yesterday, with the publisher showing off follow-ups to Epic Games' Gears of War, Team Ninja's Ninja Gaiden, Lionhead's Fable, and Rare's Viva Pinata. However, there were a handful of new properties on hand as well, such as Silicon Knights' long-delayed, just-dated action role-playing game Too Human.

So how will Microsoft's strategy pan out against the competition, and what is the publisher doing to keep the Xbox 360 on top? GameSpot asked Microsoft's Shane Kim just those questions at yesterday's event.

That being said I do think that Xbox has a solid line-up this year if only because they are pushing into different genres, expanding their library. Arguably not as impressive as PS3s lineup (depending on your tastes) but they have a good mixture this time, instead of just shooters.

As a matter of fact Im getting exactly what I wanted this year. Last year was the year of the shooter, each game giving so much innovation to the industry, every one with its own distingishing features, but at the end of the day what I am really craving are more action and rpg titles.

Ill still get my shooter fix with Left 4 Dead (so excited), GOW2, and Resistance, but Im really hoping we will get something special with Too Human, Fable, Banjo, Tomb Raider, and Splinter Cell. Hopefully those games will each add something great to the industry.

I missed a truckload of other games but yall get the idea. Innovative features, and solid stories, thats what I want.

PS I know Resistance is a PS3 game. I may buy it just for that. There are some great PS games coming out too, but for now I just own a 360, and this post is long enough without mentioning all the PS games too.

This is an area that Microsoft has almost completely dropped the ball.

Microsoft only has some three or four first party studios. A huge percentage of Microsoft's 'exclusive' content for the 360 isn't really exclusive. Way too many games are PC/360 games that you don't need a 360 to play. And at this point in the 360s life most gamer's PCs are able to run higher quality versions than on the 360, mod support, mouse & keyboard, no online fees, etc.

I see your point, but don't entirely agree.

I bought a new gaming PC recently. Far more powerful/expensive than I needed, and I'm still not entirely sure why I got it, but I guess I wanted to make sure it could handle a few years worth of games.

That being said, I still most 360/PC releases for the 360. For several reasons:

1. I love achievements. I could care less about my Gamer Score, but I feel like achievements add a lot of replayability to otherwise-short single player games. It's the first generation I've ever really found myself replaying games on higher difficulties.

2. Yeah, you pay for multiplayer, but you also basically guarantee a cheater-free environment. That alone is worth a little under $5 a month for me. Not to mention, everyone is on the same general playing level (same controller, same system), which is nice as well.

3. I don't have to worry about video card drivers. Buy the game, stick it in, it works. I mean, assuming the 360 does RRoD on me again. But, that aside. I bought the Witcher last year, and while loving it, it just couldn't stop crashing on Vista. It was absurd. This was a Games for Windows game, no less. Completely ridiculous, and made me remember why I stopped being a PC-only gamer.

But, of course, this is just me. These reasons may not matter to other people. But that's why I own Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, etc. on the 360 and not the PC.

I understand what you are saying, I have been a PC and Playstation owner the last three console generations. Before that it was the Sega Genesis that ruled the console; 1 game - EA Sports NHL 92-95. Yeah, people referring to the PC as a console is a tired argument. A 360 plays games, you dont have to spend insane amounts of money to augment it, and you dont have to worry about the muss and fuss on a PC.

We are lucky enough to have a console that lets us play some of the must have titles from the PC, and, so far, seems to have the best ports.

I dont want to add flame bait, but the console war is essentially between 360, PS, and Wii. If (in that realm) the 360 gets a game that the other two dont get, it is arguably exclusive to that console.

Case in point: Left 4 Dead. Hopefully it does go cross platform cause that game looks SWEET.

Even those two big games are both getting PC versions. Fable 2 will almost certainly get a PC version latter.

It is hard to imagine that Ninja Gaiden 2 won't have a Ninja Gaiden 2 Sigma on the PS3 since they already went through the trouble of writing their own engine for the PS3.

Banjo Kazooie is the only big 360 game I can think of that won't have a PC version.

fact is ms does have good exclusives coming this year, infact i want every one of them, i still plan on getting a ps3 but in all honesty im not as excited about there exclusives at this point in time.

im not a fan of stealth games but i do enjoy MGS in short bursts, mainly for the story, but little big planet is of no interest to me, is it even a game? i didnt like the first motorstorm, i enjoyed resistance and a sequel to that is fully welcome even though gears was still better in all areas im sure resistance 2 will improve heaps, and killzone 2 err yeah looks ok but another game building hype for really no reason, looks ok but not gears good, more of a haze/timeshift good.

so personally ps3 exclusives dont appeal a huge ammount, i know i like viva pinata so cant wait for the sequel, i also have memories of playing banjo back in the day so nuts & bolts is a first day purchase, gears 2 need i say more, fable 2 is looking hot, too human dont do much for me though...and others like the new splinter cell look promising.

oh yeah not to forget scene it2 and the mystery lips game, my main complain with the origonal xbox was it didnt have enough quality family games so im glad to see the 360 is putting that right, either way both consoles have top quality games coming out this year.

Well said. Both consoles have great lineups this year, but obviously people will be biased to their console of choice and personal gaming preferences.

MGS4, Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet are the big three for Sony this year. And Microsoft has Fable 2, Gears of War 2 and Banjo 3. Sure they're are plenty of other titles from both but these will be the ones that will most likely hog the media and the sales charts through to the end of year.

This years content is much more divisive then last years. Last year it was all shooters which generally makes everyone happy. This year games are coming out in a variety of different genres so people are more picky.

Some people dont like RPGs, some people dont like beat-em-ups, yet, shockingly, the majority of people are still excited for the big shooters coming out this year.

I think the Xbox exclusives are great, but I can understand why people may be underwhelmed.

If you talk to anyone from a company about their product of course they're going to say they're the best. Why would they sell a product if they didn't think it was the best.

what's most shocking is that Grand Theft Auto IV exclusive episodic content isn't available at day one. They have been on Sony for saying they're not delivering on their promises yet they kept saying on day one you'll have exclusive content. They also think they have the most value, their games run on SD DVDs.

Resistance 2 has two individual campaigns, eight player co-op, and sixty players online battles. That could only be done on Blu-ray going over 25GB (first layer) unless they make multiple discs.

All I'm saying is everyone company will think they're the best but really look at what they'll offer now and later. See through the marketing and look at the basics. Especially when they mention online PlayStation 3 is like a PC (Personal Computer) as a TV console and XBOX 360 is controlled 24/7.

I think they should stick to the real questions instead of the ones we know what they're going to say.

I don't / didn't like questions like: how do you think your games will compare to the competition, what do you think of your games on your platform...etc.

Questions like this will be easy for companies to answer and nothing new will come up.

I liked / like questions like: What do you have planed to keep the momentum to stay ahead, where do you think needs to grow the most in your company..etc.

so u think Standard dvd is good? because gears on 360 wasnt the full game and had stuff cut out only to be included on the PC? because dead ro alive 4 had to take out a bunch of crap just to finish the game (tag team levels, short endings), because lost oddesy a good but basic jrpg is 4 disc yet it could have been done on ps2(not graphically).u were only speaking about multi-plat games on ps3 not using all space, exclusive games use the space and would almost always be multi disc if on 360.

sorry but blu-ray works, first off a game like heavenly sword used a full 25 gig blu-ray, second MEtal gear solid had to use a dual layered 50 Gig disc. do u seriously freakin think that that cud be done on the tiny standard disc?? nooo. dont be a fanboy, look at reality.

lol, I'm late with this but the PlayStation 3 games have to stream so when they go multiplatform they don't do it properly. So putting some data on the HD (hard drive) will save them time developing on the PlayStation 3. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune takes up 25GB of data with no load times and no installs. This is because they focused on one platform and was able to do the advanced streaming. This is partly why multiplatform games in 2007 was so bad on the PlayStation 3. The other reason is RAM (Random Access Memory) is split and the XBOX 360 is shared. So if they have PlayStation 3 lead platform the split memory teachnique can be use on the XBOX 360 making it easier to develop for both. There are other reasons two but I think these are the two major ones.

What you're talking about is multiplatform games and multiplatform games are suppose to be the same. If they weren't almost identical people would get angry. The whole point of multiplatform games is so all version can be indentical as much as possible.

Technically speaking the XBOX 360 can only put out 720p while the PlayStation 3 can put out 1080p as the native resolution. This is why Halo 3, Project Gotham Racing 3, or Perfect Dark Zero have SD (Standard Definition) resolutions. So not all games speaking of right now but eventually 70% if not all will be using double layers on the Blu-ray disc.

1. Aknowledge the competition, and speak with respect about them, and what they have they have planned.

2. Show you have a good understanding of the competitions line-up. After that is established, show confidence and explain how your line-up is the better one, IN YOUR OPINION.

3. Don't be too disrespectful of the competition, it shows you believe your own product is weaker than you say. Shane Kim does and alright job, but he's no Phil Harrison. That guy had some seriously good qualities, watch some interviews, he compliments MS and Nintendo but still seems confident in Sony.

first off MS pays for exclusive content, and forces u to get it, u must pre-order lost oddesy to get ful game???? huh, gta 4 episode??? thanks to MS all this "Extra content" must be paid for, not unlocked, not on disc, quickly turning a 60$ game into a 70-80$ game, i believe halo started this.

while halo did it with good reason now its just getting ridiculous. while im still going to buy the costumes for ninja gaiden, why cant the costumes just be unlocked like the old games? not pay 2.50 for each.
