Xbox One: Not A Good Idea For Microsoft to Abandon Kinect

The Web Graffiti: "Not too long ago, new rumors surfaced signaling that Microsoft might choose to drop Kinect in favor of a $399 Xbox One. This is something many folks in the gaming community have been waiting for ever since the console was announced at E3 in 2013. The question is though, would dropping the Kinect camera be a good thing for the console? Personally, I believe it’s a bad idea to drop the one thing that truly sets the Xbox One apart from the competition."

No point in it now, the hardware in the xbone is so handicapped that the camera is the only differentiating feature. Better for MS to max out its potential and whatever entertainment offerings they have since it seems they cant keep up on the power front.

I returned my one today. Had it for about 2 1/2 months and it came with a broken kinect. Some things they force you to use kinect on like the video editing app (which is such bs) but overall I was playing bf4. Not having the kinect really made no difference at all.

UnHoly_One1283d ago

What part of the Upload Studio forces you to use Kinect?

Obviously if you want to put an image of yourself in there, but none of the actual editing features use it.

???

TheBurger291283d ago

well whenever I tried to use the app it said Kinect was not plugged in and wouldn't let me use it.

UnHoly_One1282d ago

I've never NOT had my Kinect plugged in, so I obviously would never have encountered that.

Not sure why it would do that, that is weird.

aceitman1284d ago

the question no one is bringing up is. if ms did a kinectless x1 will they utilize the ram that was used for kinect to help games run better and if they do will that put the systems that have kinect in a bad spot , not being able to play certain games because u have kinect. in my opinion they should never seperate the 2, i have a feeling it will make things really bad.

AngelicIceDiamond1283d ago

This is only my opinion but I think MS will keep the camera in there with the 400$ price cut.

Kinect 2.0 cost allot more than the original Kinect. If MS dropped Kinect as an accessory, Kinect 2.0 will have fun time selling for 200 to maybe 250$ stand alone compared to 150$ for Kinect 1.0

At that point Kinect would be pointless and people won't buy stand alone Kinect for that much or at all really.

The system is built around Kinect features in mind. Soon MS will release an update to improve Kinect navigation and voice soon so I can see 400$ X1 with Kinect in it still.

Bigpappy1284d ago

There is one of these submitted here almost daily. I don't see it getting much traction. But some people will never quit. Removing Kinect with Kill X1. It will piss off the millions of people who already supported the console as is. If you don't like Kinect turn it off or buy a PS4 like millions of other gamers are doing.

Allsystemgamer1283d ago

The kinect is what is preventing me and many of my friends from buying a one lol

UnHoly_One1283d ago

Can I ask why?

You don't have to use it. You don't even have to take it out of the box.

So why it is keeping you from buying an XB1?

IRetrouk1283d ago

@ unholy
Why should they have to pay for something in the box they dont want? If they are not using it, its then just wasted money, micro should have had the two separate from the start, its too late now for them to split the pack, if they do they piss off their hardcore fanbase, if they dont they lose potentiial customer's, either way I buying a one in march, but I see the point of those that dont want it.

Bigpappy1283d ago

I they sold you an X1 with Kinect for $299, would you not buy it? If you would buy, then Kinect is not your problem, it is the high price. If you would not, then I really don't get why extra features would prevent you from buying a system. Makes no sense whatsoever.

Allsystemgamer1283d ago

it makes perfect sense. I will not pay for something I will never use. It's wasting money. sure it's got features it uses but it doesn't do anything revolutionary. my friend's kinect is packed away in the closet. It would be a waste of money for me. Im not so lazy that i can't get off the couch to press a button or use a controller. I also don;t like motion gaming.

Kinect should be an option, not a necessity. There isn't a single feature on the x1 that NEEDS kinect. That is my problem.

UnHoly_One1282d ago (Edited 1282d ago )

I didn't particularly want a Kinect either, but I wanted an XB1, so I bought the package and I'm happy with what I got.

I guess I'm just looking at it differently.

I don't break down every individual thing in the box and decide how much I'm paying for them all separately.

I didn't use the HDMI cable that it came with, but never once did I feel like I payed for something I didn't want.

I think it's all a matter of perspective, and I'm not calling you wrong or anything, but I don't feel like I paid for Kinect. I feel like I paid for an Xbox One, and Kinect is part of Xbox One.

Just my 2 cents. Thanks for being reasonable, though, and not starting an argument like far too many others on this site usually do.

@bigpappy

i too would like to see kinect remain cos i have an xbx one and i love the device so much. its alot better than the first and i find it very intuitive im also getting another xbx one for my nephew cos he enjoys kinect sports but regards this topic i will have to agree with allsystemsgamer, the console is highly priced at $499. people will always compare prices with the ps4 and pick the cheaper one.I have alot of friends who have refused to buy an xbx one because of the price and some still find kinect a gimmick.

ms needs to drop the price and the only thing i see them dropping to better compete with sony is kinect. that alone cost about $120 to $140 dollars. Ms dropping kinect would help boost sales, the console alone (without kinect)could be as low as $369 and Ms could decide to bundle a free game with it and sell it at $399. the bundle with kinect would still be sold at retailers and kinect would also be sold as a stand alone device(with a killer app bundled in) .

Bigpappy1283d ago (Edited 1283d ago )

Here is why that is not a solution: M$ was not lying when they said Xbox was built around Kinect. The 3 OS they have in X1 is all based on Kinect. The TV integration and snap feature; Skype and all the Kinect games that will be developed for kids and casuals will all be for knot if they were to remove it.

X1 actually has a great start and does not have to match or out sell PS4 for M$ to do very well. They are not having the sales Sony is having mostly because PS4 is seen as being more powerful at a cheaper price.

If M$ wants to increase the number of X1's sold to try to get closer to Sony's numbers, they would have to sell X1 w/kinect at a loss , removing Kinect will kill the X1. It will become wii-U 2. I certainly would loose interest in the console and will consider selling, as M$ would have proven that they have no clue what they are doing anymore.

Most of those asking for Kinect to be remove will NEVER buy an Xbox. They are just asking for it because they have been on an anti-Kinect campaign since it was release, and want to take credit for getting M$ to kill it. They would then come back here and laugh at them.

No worries though. The chances of M$ removing Kinect are slim and none.

SilentGuard1283d ago

No, weaker hardware at a higher price will kill Xbone

4logpc1283d ago

They will cut the price before they cut Kinect.

GameingmyLife1283d ago

i love my kinect. it really makes you feel like its next gen and it works great, never need controller unless im bout to play a game but multimedia is so awesome..... X1 without Kinect is like a unsharpened pencil "NO POINT"

reaperofsouls1283d ago

i think M$ created male and female versions of the xbone because they seem to be breading on the shelves of my local game store or it that no one is buying them.
