Indie Development Is Hip Now, But What Hipster Wants To Be Popular?

An opinion piece via EGMR in which the author explains how indie developers aren't cut out for the spotlight, the way regular game developers are. This is why you see the likes of Phil Fish and Dong Nguyen quitting their games after massive fan reaction. They simply don't know how to handle all of that sudden attention.

Quote: "It’s somewhat disheartening because in recent years there has been a massive upsurge of indie development which really does inspire the gaming individual when you think about what a spectacle it is to see genuinely hard-working folks beating the system and making successes of themselves on their own terms. "

The story is too old to be commented.

So indie devs are hipsters? Because they don't work for EA? I... what?

Well there are many hipster indie game designers not necessarily all or even the majority of them

The whole article is based on the notion that indies are hipsters in the first place, which is not the case.

I could be wrong but did the word hipster come up anywhere in the article other than the title?

I absolutely disagree with a majority of this article but I do not see how it is based on a premise of being a hipster unless you just read the headline and judged it based on that.

My problem with this premise is that no one forces any of these people to put themselves out thier. If they really just made games because they love to make games than they don't have to be public and market it or take the press calls or respond to twitter messages.

Oh and the fact that he calls the industry poisonous...

If you can't handle the heat get out of the kitchen. As these people did. (Who were almost all crazy before they were developers anyways, not because of being a developer)

WTF? it REALLY pisses me off when people start throwing "hipster" and "hip" around where it isn't even remotely true. I find this very disrespectful to the people that work so hard to make something they have a passion for as it just dismisses every aspect of passion and hard work they put into this project only to have it chalked up as just doing it to be "hip".

How would you feel if you dreamed of making your own car, free from any company and made by your own accord and by your own rules. you spend 4 years of hard labor and massive mental strain driving you to the point of insanity at times. then you finally finish, you bring it to a car show to reveal your life's dream, then the first person who sees it realizes you made it yourself and starts walking around the place saying you did it to be "hip" and just to try and be all "hipster" about it? talking about you're trying to hard to show you're an individual when really all you wanted was to share your creation?

Trust me, no one would go through what indie devs put themselves through to add to their "hipster" agenda, not a single person would deem that torture worth it.
