Allisa James from DualShockers reviews Bravely Default, Square Enix's latest JRPG for the 3DS that meshes old and new styles. Find out why she loves the game and why she will never regret her review title.
"There are plenty of people that believe the turn-based JRPG to be an “ancient relic” that has become obsolete in the face of more modern, action-oriented battle systems." There is no one on the face of the Earth, that annoys me more than those people. They need to STFU and go play games that they like.
Completely agree with you. I never understood the logic that "I don't enjoy this type of game, therefore it's terrible and everyone hates it."
I'm not sure why anyone dislikes turn-based combat either. Doesn't everyone play Pokemon at the very least least?
There needs to be a modern example on HD consoles in order to shut them up sadly. The problem there being no devs or publishers wanting to commit to such a project. Certainly not Square or not even - so far - Altus or NIS.
agreee wt u! i think ur my new hero
I just got it, wholeheartedly agree. Havent liked FF (other than tactics) since X and even that was a bittersweet experience to me. First thing i did was switch on japanese voices though o_o... Hope the west buys this so we can count on the the sequel coming. Question: Should i switch to hard? For reference i beat SMT IV and FE:A last year on normal but that was much more punishing obviously. This feels a little too easy comparatively but it might just be the beginning.
For me I really got out of the series after FFXII (I love me some Ivalice series) and mainly stuck with their portable fare from then on. For me the game was also too easy (came off the same games as you funny enough XD ) so definitely try switching to Hard mode and seeing how the game plays for you. You can always switch back if it's not to your liking.
I haven't played much Final Fantasy, Only FFTA2,FF11,FF7. Bravely Default is full of quality and gets all the small details right. All the things people complained about JRPG's have been fixed and improved upon in BD. This game is a true gem.
The funny thing is that this game, by most count, is the traditional FF modernized rather than the AAA productions which have been meandering trying to find updated mechanics. As well as failing to justify the over focus on graphics.
I'm currently playing Final Fantasy V for the first time on my tablet. Essentially, Bravely Default seems to be (at least so far as up to Chapter 3) a remake of FFV.
I have found the tales of series and persona (only played p4g) are brilliant for that jrpg fix I craved since ff10 and for dealing with the disappointment that was ff13!
Eh, MegaTen and Tales Of games just don't have that same kind of feel as a good Final Fantasy. Few games do--Suikoden II and V certainly do, as do most of the Dragon Quest games, though.
Loving this game Turn based JRPG's for me will never die.
