I don't expect WD to do good on Wii U since it's delayed and most would just opt to buy the game on the other platforms

It wasn't going to do well either way and you know it.

Let's keep it real.

Hard to gauge how well a timely released, fully supported, technically well made game would do on the wii u at this point. Because there has literally never been one multiplat from 3rd parties fitting those qualifications.
If this made good use of the gamepad and filled all those voids? I would gladly buy it. I remember a poll on neogaf said the same thing... with more saying theyd buy a well made wii u version than ps4 version. If someone could link that poll thatd be cool.

Chicken or the egg?

Nintendo fans claim that the lack of third party game purchases is because third parties don't give as much support, Third parties claim that they give less support because they don't buy them.

It certainly doesn't help that at the turn of the century, Nintendo created a console with tiny discs in a time when data contained in games was exploding and had a controller with one less button than the other two systems in a time when games were becoming more complicated. Then they came out with a completely non-traditional system that didn't suit most third parties. And most recently, in a time when power has been a constantly pushed issue by developers, they went half-cocked with the performance.

Nintendo hasn't done great by third parties in the last 13 years and third parties just don't seem motivated to create impressive games on Nintendo systems.

They're both to blame, but it's on Nintendo's head to fix the relationship between them and third parties because it's THEIR system that's going to fail if they don't.

Meh i was going to get the WiiU version but this news has sold me on the ps4 version. The WiiU really is doing bad that even 3rd party devs are delaying games for the platform it wouldn't surprise me if it gets cancelled all together ;)
Spenok  +   659d ago
Yeah this is one of those games that they probably don't want to make on this platform because most people as you say would/will more than likely buy it on PS3/360 PS4/Xbone.

Don't get me wrong. This game will be fantastic on whatever platform you play it on. However I just don't thing the Wii Us user base is the type to pick up a game like this.

However I could easily be proven wrong. I hope it does do well on the Wii U. Something other than Nintendo games need to, otherwise we will continue to see less and less support for the system, effectively killing the system. I love Nintendo, and don't want to see them fail.

Good luck Nintendo/Ubisoft on this game!
Oner  +   659d ago
@Chrischi1988 you said

"Wii U Version will offer the best gameplay, because all the hacking, the viewing over cameras and all is done on the gamepad. It brings the most reality to the game, since Aiden is going to use a smartphone for hacking and watching thru cameras, they can perfectly uses his touchcontrolls for the controlls on the gamepad. The PS4 version is no different than the PS3 one, only with better graphics, but the Wii U version offers something totally different, something totally new and fresh, simply said the closest to reality experience, but I dont expect a known fanboy like you to understand that or answer that in a non fanboyish manner ;)"

Well then at that same token, couldn't the PS4 be the best overall (using your own example) as you should technically be able to use a PS Vita, Tablet or an ACTUAL cellphone as interfaces with the second screen options/capability within the PS4 already?
clouds5  +   659d ago
PS vita only does remote play. You can mirror the game to it but not have a different image on it like wii u. People have to stop comparing vita and wii u. It's a different concept...
And using a tablet or smartphone yeah but have fun switching between your phone and gamepad all the time. With wiiu the 2nd screen is in the perfect spot because it was designed to do exactly that. Everything else is a workaround imho.

It's just sad that people are too narrow minded to see what the wii u can offer in terms of gameplay... Wii U version of Watchdogs will be the best one indeed especially in terms of gameplay and immersion (graphically it will be between ps3 and ps4 as stated by ubisoft).
But it could also very well be the last game ubisoft ever releases for wii u.
Neonridr  +   659d ago
No, why would Ubisoft implement all these features so that like 10% of PS4 owners could take advantage of it. EVERYONE has a gamepad with the Wii U version, hardly anyone has a Vita who has the PS4. Too much time, money and effort wasted to implement techniques that nobody can utilize on the PS4 version.

In theory, yes it would work the same way though.
Oner  +   658d ago
@clouds5 ~ Just because the Vita can do remote play does NOT in any way mean it can ONLY do so. Remember, the Vita utilizes wireless technology just as the WiiU's controller capability does to offer the exact same idea implementation as the WiiU's version. I will admit that I am unsure if the same can be said about a Tablet or a touch capable Cell phone)....which that leads me into Neonridr's comment.

I'm not sure where you got that 10% Vita number (as it's more like 60% ~ But more to your overall point though ~ I quite honestly do understand (and actually agree to an extent) that Ubisofts implementation of it might not have been ultimately worth it for them at the time of dev'ing. THOUGH that does not mean it can't technically be capable of offering the same experience if they wanted to implement. Maybe as some form of DLC possibly?

Delayed because its low priority? or so they can make good use of the wii u controller?

cleft5  +   659d ago
More like they want to wait until the heavy hitters for the WiiU comes out and moves more consoles and they are probably hoping for a price drop on the console. With the new changes coming to the WiiU it makes sense to delay. I am just glad they haven't outright canceled the game.
PeteyMcPickle  +   659d ago
@cleft5 Iwata has confirmed that there'll be no price drop till March 2015 at the earliest.
lizard81288  +   659d ago

It's funny because then if they wait for the heavy hitters, nobody is going to by it...Just like with Rayman. They wait until a Mario game (along with other huge games) comes out and guess which sold more, a Mario game or Rayman...

Sometimes I don't know what pubs are thinking. Then they complain nobody buys their games on the wiiu.

If I have a choice ONLY between Smash Bros For or Watch_Dogs, WD is going to get passed up.

For a fanboy you seem pretty ok with this hopefully Nintendo can step in otherwise this would just be another blow for the WiiU ;)
stragomccloud  +   659d ago
I'm not a fanboy. I'm a PC gamer first, and a console gamer second. Though I own all of the consoles as well. Except for the newest PS4 and Xbox one.

I just jump in whenever I think people are spreading misinformation or stupidity. Nintendo has been getting a little bit less of it over the past week or so, so I've had to start defending the Xbox one from time to time too.

I just want gamers to stop arguing about stupid things like specs(which for me is ironic because of how Sony fanboys complain about the "weak" specs of the Wii U, even though compared to most gaming PCs, PS4 is a joke too.), and enjoy games and experiences. Then share those experiences in a more positive way. I'm pretty ashamed of how jaded and poisoned the gaming community has become.

AsimLeonheart  +   659d ago
I do not think so. There is no release date for the Wii U version and there hasnt been a single piece of footage shown from the Wii U version. It is essentially a vaporware. If the game performs below expectations on other platforms or Wii U sales do not pick up then it is as good as cancelled.
Metallox  +   659d ago
The absence of footage of the Wii U version may not be a reason at all. We don't have any fotage of the PS3 and 360 versions either. ALthough I don't deny the fact that there are chances of the cancellation of the game on Wii U.

SpiralTear  +   659d ago
Ubisoft got greedy and thought that releasing a game like Rayman Legends multi-platform would be worth competing with GTA V in market presence within the same month. Lo and behold, less-than-stellar performance in sales. And in some act of bizarre irony, the Wii U version sold the best.

Let's hope Ubisoft doesn't make that stupid mistake again.
Dunban67  +   659d ago
The PS3 version of Rayman sold the best and the XB 360 version sold nearly as many as the Wii U version -

Ubisoft sold far more copies of Rayman going multiplat than they wold have if they had kept it only on the Wii U

So yes they did learn

I just hope we still get Watchdogs sooner or later- I would rather have the option to buy a game late than not at all- particularly since options on the Wii u are usually in short supply
DanielGearSolid  +   659d ago
Seriously... You're in denial

If you really think Rayman wouldve been more successful on less platforms...

Rayman sold better on WiiU at launch, since then the ps3 version passed it and the 360 version caught up
wonderfulmonkeyman  +   659d ago
The ps3 version only caught up because everyone switched to Mario 3d world instead and because ubisoft betrayed a lot of wii u owners that wanted it sooner than it was offered, while ps3 owners had fewer choices and went with rayman because that was the best platformer they could get at the time without buying a wii u.
Don't even kid yourselves; rayman would have sold best either way, if the delay and breach of exclusivity had not turned many away from supporting it.

I suspect Ubi got caught with their pants down. They probably cancelled it but don't want the bad press due to the leak.

They'll quietly wait until its released on other consoles and the hype fads to the next big thing. Then theyll announce a cancellation on wiiu.

Just my thinking.
WeAreLegion  +   659d ago
I'm afraid you might be right. If it's not cost effective, I'm not sure Ubisoft will allow them to make the port. :/

MsmackyM  +   659d ago
So Ubisoft delays a finished Rayman Legends on Wii U to port to other console, then turn around and delays Watchdogs on Wii U in order to release on other platforms first. Do publishers honestly wonder why 3rd parties don't perform well on Nintendo platforms?

Well I was planning on getting the Wii U version of Watchdogs for the Gamepad integration, but now I think I'll just pass on the game all together. There's already plenty of Nintendo first party titles coming out this year to demand my gaming dollars and time.
SpiralTear  +   659d ago
Look, third parties need to step up their game on Wii U, yes, but saying that you won't buy Watch Dogs on Wii U because of this delay is just as much of a problem. People chew out Nintendo console owners because of that attitude.

Support good games on Wii U: first, second or third party.
MsmackyM  +   659d ago
Actually I'm saying I won't buy Watchdogs period. I also have a PS4 so the lack of 3rd party games on the Wii U don't really bother me, what does bother me is the double standard third parties hold Nintendo to. Third parties claim success of 1million sold on a install base of a 160 million, but cry fowl of 500k sold on an install base of 3mil. Also with most gamers here on N4G already owning atleast one of the HD twins, I don't get the lack of third party games being an excuse not to get a Wii U.
ABizzel1  +   659d ago
I see it as Watch Dogs being a very similar, but modern take on Assassin's Creed.

The Wii U sales of both Assassin's Creed 3 (230k) and Assassin's Creed 4 (130k) made up less than 2% of the total sales for the game. The Vita version of AC3 Liberation sold more than both of those combined, and still would have sold more if those numbers were doubled (910k).

Wii U will never be a priority for the majority of 3rd parties, because their games simply aren't selling, and even Nintendo IP's outside of Mario are struggling.
extermin8or  +   659d ago
You realise the low wii u instal base and people not buying their games in larger quantities at launch is exactly why this happens? Right?... Financially as a buisness it doesnt make sense to prioritise the wii u at all...
Chrischi1988  +   659d ago
Prioritise? All plattforms get it on the same day, only Wii U doesnt, thats pretty much antiprioritise.

I mean, the gamepad support was meant to actually make a difference in this game. AC didnz sell to well, since it was a normal game without any gamepadspecific features, but watchdogs was supposed to be different.

We cannot get at least one game on day one without any problems. This game shouldve been released in November last year, they took another half year more and noe they say Wii U version will still be delayed? They cry about bad sales, but how can sales improve, if a game on a small install base will be the last to get that game? They had enough time to polish the game and the Wii U still needs time? I hope Ubi surprises us at lesst and gives us a great version, I mean the gamepad is supposed to give us the best experience, maybe they polish that and because of that it takes longer. Maybe the Gamepad offers some kind of local multiplayer, too. I hope it will be great, I will support Ubi on this, even though I dont like this delay.
clouds5  +   659d ago
If the last gen has sold like 160mil consoles combined and the new one just launched it never makes sense to release games for the new consoles.
Don't forget the xb1 and ps4 install base is even lower than the wii u atm.

I have bought every ubisoft game that was released on wii u even though I have a good gaming pc. The gamepad just offers something that is way more interesting to me than resolution or textures. And I will buy Watchdogs for it.
But Devs have to stop complaining about their games not selling on wiiu when they constantly release it later and with stripped down features and no DLC.
DanielGearSolid  +   659d ago
Quit lying to yourself...

You act as if Rayman was gonna sell millions more copies if it didnt get delayed on wiiU

Just putting a 3rd party games on the wiiu is suicide. You should be grateful... Or you can not be grateful and continue to only buy Mario like every other nintendo fan
wonderfulmonkeyman  +   659d ago
You would act like that too if the situation were reversed so don't even go there.
Wii u owners shouldn't need to be grateful when a port is done wrong.
They're not third class gamers and should not have to poor up with being treated as such by companies with proven track records of excellence when they actually try their hardest.

I'm tired having this debate...

Nintendo destroyed their own third party ecosystem with the original Wii (only promoting their 1st party games, targeted family friendly/younger demographic... console specs a generation behind). so far they've done nothing with the WiiU to change that

3rd party devs arent blameless but this is a problem nintendo created in the first place
Chrischi1988  +   659d ago
I understand that nintendo is in a tight spot, but as a gamer I feel offended by other gamers telling me I should be grateful for a game still coming. Like I should kiss a** all day, because I want to play a game. As a consumer I dont have to be grateful, I am a normal gamer and not some kind of third class gamer. I dont like if people tell others to be quiet and that they have no right to complain, because of nintendos failures. We have a right to complain, as any gamer has.

"We made the difficult decision to further delay the release of Watch Dogs on Wii U to focus the team's resources where they could have the broadest possible benefit for both our customers and Ubisoft"

Company Jargon for, "we know this is going to do well on platforms with a larger install base, we'd rather focus our efforts on the platforms that will actually make us money."

Lets face it, releasing a game on 360,PS3,XBO,PS4 and PC is enough of a hassle in itself. But when companies like Ubisoft have shown that the Wii U version of a multiplat has accounted for less than 2% of the overall sales(I'm looking at you Splinter Cell Blacklist), they begin to have their doubts. It's a bit of a Catch-22 really. People would love to see more third party developer support on the Wii U but with the sales those titles have been getting, those same developers have little to no interest in touching the platform.

Wiiu currently has a bigger install base than xbone or ps4.
deafdani  +   659d ago
True, but it's pretty likely it will sell much better on Xbox One and PS4 nonetheless. Just look at sales for COD: Ghosts across all platforms for indication.

Mature games usually don't sell that good on Nintendo consoles, but family-friendly games sells best there. (Rayman Legends and Rayman Origins both sold better on Nintendo's consoles than anywhere else).
extermin8or  +   659d ago
At last figures over a month old its likely that by the time this game launches both are either equal or ahead of the wii u plus the % of the instal base that will buy their games is greater on ps and xbox...
Dunban67  +   659d ago
look at the sales of Assasains Creed Black Flag-
They have sold far more on the PS4 and XB1 than Wii U-
Loadedklip  +   659d ago
True but not for long and third party games (Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty) have already outsold their Wii U companion on the PS4 and XB1 by 4 to 10 times more.

The Wii U fan base consist of gamers who own multiple systems and will buy third party games on the other systems or only own a Wii U but don't support third party games.

Either way ... third party CORE games do not sell well on Wii U.
SkullBlade169  +   659d ago
Not for long it doesn't.
FinalomegaS  +   659d ago
if they would treat their release games like the other systems and give the wiiu DLCs then maybe the people that own multiple systems won't go buying the other versions. The WiiU splintercell BL... omg that is just a fail with no DLC or proper online matchmaking, the biggest foes to any 3rd party is the Miiverse, and if word is out that the game is crap and a lot of negative vibes rolling on there, chances are many on there will say, "I'll pass".
extermin8or  +   659d ago
Theu did around launch and they sold extremely poorly. Ubisoft kept up support longer rhan the other third parties any other publisher probably would've cancelled this game based on the % of an already small user base likely to buy the game on wii u-from previous titles sales its not very large...
FinalomegaS  +   659d ago

what is the user base for the new systems? It's not the user base the problem, it's more complex than just that.

if you have 5 mil units out there, are you expecting 1/4 of the consumers to buy a multiplat?1.25M... not for a system with so many 1st party titles.

On your topic, Ubi did release an exlusive but what's up with the non online play? the idea was nice but take a hard look at the wiiu games from Ubi and you'll notice they released ONE exclusive for the core gamers and sold 630K, knack sold about 500k was for casual on the PS4 and sold that... maybe the games are on the wrong systems lol.
AnEwGuY  +   659d ago
Blaming a DEVELOPER for "no proper online matchmaking" on the WiiU is ridiculous. Nintendo's so far behind the curve in multiplayer gaming arena it's beyond embarrassing.

how did you figure this?

wiiu can look almost as shiny as the XB1 and run at a decent FPS, but looks the best compared to the older systems right?

Remember the developer is putting their resources into "other" systems and the wiiu team will take a break or a little rest.

I just hope they have the online play fixed.
Beastforlifenoob  +   659d ago
They haven't even shown any gameplay footage (for wii u) or what you mean like assassins creed 4 (also made by ubi)where it looks slightly better than ps360 but much worse than ps4one? But it runs at a hilariously bad frame rate and resolution? Please dont kid yourself buddy, wii u is an obsolete piece of junk and thats why the developers delayed it on the wii u and instead focused on the 2 big DAWGS. Because guess what it will be like every other 3rd part and account for less than 1% of the overall sales. Then you will complain when its missing features.

Yeah....I mean, that's the next obvious step. They've put it on the back burner...and turned the burner off. Once they release it on the other platforms, and it sells about 10 million units, they might bother with the WiiU again. But it would be smart to just cancel it, rather than waste anymore resources on a mature game that won't sell on a family-focused platform. ZombiU isn't even close to 1 million yet, and COD:BLOPSII only sold about 200k. You know they'll be working on DLC + the sequel, for the other they might as well not bother with it.
This is largely on Nintendo, so the rabid fanboys need to redirect their ire over this.

For the WiiU, who knows? It's been rumored for several months now that it was in trouble, and could be cancelled on the WiiU. Ubisoft initially denied at least the cancellation rumors...but this doesn't look good. You only need to read the last part of this article to be able to read between the lines on this one:

" "We made the difficult decision to further delay the release of Watch Dogs on Wii U to focus the team's resources where they could have the broadest possible benefit for both our customers and Ubisoft".

The delay follows rumours that the Wii U version had been cancelled after pre-orders for the game were cancelled by GameStop Italy and its absence from Nintendo's release schedule."

Like I said, this is on Nintendo.

I agree with most of what you said, except the Zombi U part. If I remember correctly, that game reached 500,000 sales when the Wii U's install base was barely around 4 million users. That's 25% of all Wii U users, which is a damn good install base, and I really don't know what did Ubisoft expect.

What, they wanted the Wii U's entire userbase to buy it?
extermin8or  +   659d ago
They expected wiius userbase to be many tines the size already they also expected wii u ti account for more than 2% of sales of games like splinter cell blacklist or AC.

And now it's gonna sell even less
hollabox  +   659d ago
Probably not a good move on Ubisoft part. All the people that want to buy it will get it on superior platforms or make potential buyers purchase new systems to play it. Delayed releases usually results in lower overall sales, but to be honest I can't see this selling over 500,000 units before discounts for the Wii U. But hey you never know, this could be the definitive edition when compared to X360 and PS3 and sell 1 million plus.
deafdani  +   659d ago
Wow, Ubisoft. I have defended you time and time again because despite your shortcomings, you have still been the biggest Wii U supporter as far as third parties are concerned.

But this?

Yeah, I can't think of anything to justify this.

The internet is going to rage on you, Ubisoft, and it's going to rage HARD.
gpturbo81  +   659d ago
gonna rage harder than a 8yr old with a mic online. AHHH!!
Dlacy13g  +   659d ago
Given the small user base of the WiiU...I don't think the internet is going to rage that hard.
porkChop  +   659d ago
I can't blame them to be honest. Watch Dogs has been in development for at least 5 years now. Tons of money and resources have been put into it. The Wii U version, no matter how good it is, will not sell. 3rd party games on Wii U don't sell well, especially mature games, regardless of quality.

It's better in Ubisoft's eyes to focus on the other versions of the game which will be successful, and then once they've launched those they can come back and put some proper focus on the Wii U version if they think it's worth pursuing at that time.

The problem here is not Ubisoft. It's Nintendo. Nintendo acts as if they don't need 3rd party games to sell their consoles but they do. Nintendo alienates 3rd parties with their customized, low end hardware because it requires a ton more work compared to the PS4 and the XBO which are mostly extremely easy to work with aside from XBO's ESRAM.

The PS3 and the 360 are largely the same, and so both consoles use the same version of the game with obvious optimizations. Same goes for XBO, PS4, and PC. They're all close enough in power that they can run off roughly the same version of the game. The Wii U is different. It's much too slow to run the next gen version of the game, and the PS3/360 version is a bit low end for the system. The Wii U is in the middle of both gens, and so it requires its own custom version of every game which requires a lot of extra work, a lot of money, and a lot of resources/man power. It's not worth it.

If you want better 3rd party support then tell that to Nintendo and hopefully when it comes time to develop their next console they'll make it easier for 3rd parties to work with and support.
Justindark  +   659d ago
well when u hold out on dlc u cant expect it to sell the most can you?

I agree that the Wii U versions should receive the same content and DLC as all the other versions. But look at it this way, Ubisoft said that Wii U sales accounted for less than 2% of their sales.

You can't blame publishers for not giving the Wii U the same support. They're not supporting the Wii U because no one is buying any games for the system aside from first party games. By releasing games for the Wii U they're essentially just throwing money away.

UBIsoft has been Nintendo's best third party supporter. You can't blame them when their core games (Assassin's Creeds, Splinter Cell) have bombed on Wii U.
porkChop  +   658d ago
That's the big problem. 3rd party games aren't selling on the Wii U no matter how good or bad the quality of the port is. Wii U owners just aren't buying any games except for Nintendo's 1st party titles.

Thats pretty lame how they delayed the wiiu version of rayman legends so it can have a simultaneous release, but then they delay the wiiu version of this game no problem.
Dlacy13g  +   659d ago
I think that is a case of:

Delay Rayman and we are for sure going to be able to make more money by releasing on 360/PS3 along with the WiiU.

Delay the WiiU version of WatchDogs because we shelved making the game for a while so its not ready to ship, plus if the WiiU doesn't sell more... we can cut our loses now.

Amazing post. That's exactly how I feel about my wii u. I love the system but people just don't understand it and what nintendo is trying to do with it. And by that I mean consumers and developers.
porkChop  +   658d ago
I think developers and gamers understand just fine what Nintendo's trying to with the Wii U. The problem is that developers and gamers don't *like* what Nintendo is doing with the system, it's not the type of system that they want. I know quite a few die-hard Nintendo fans that just have zero interest in the Wii U.

Let's be honest here, the Wii U version won't see the light of day.
Dlacy13g  +   659d ago
Is this a case of a "Delayed because we really aren't sure we still want to make this version" delay?

Ok but seriously, I have no doubt Nintendo has been trying to rally 3rd party support and this is a big one so hopefully it does well enough on the WiiU that Ubisoft feels good about future support.
extermin8or  +   659d ago
As vita has shown us aswell 3rd party support is either there from day 1 and sakes are good or sales are bad and 3rd party support unfortunately withers and dies :/
TheVideoGamHer  +   659d ago
Of course it is lol. Now when I get it on my PlayStation device and not my Nintendo device....don't act like you don't know why the Wii U version didn't sell, Ubisoft.

It's a loop.

1. Ubisoft provides an unacceptable game for the Wii U.
2. People don't buy it because it's not very good.
3. Ubisoft acts outraged... "?!?!??!@!?Nobody bought our game on the Wii U?!>!>!"

Rinse and repeat.

That is no good...

Great... more delays for Wii U versions of third-party releases. This is definitely not going to help drive sales on that platform.
pleasuretokill  +   659d ago
In non-pc, normal people speak...

"Nintendo, your systems sucks, nobody bought it, it is underpowered, last gen tech and we don't want to waste our time and money making an inferior version of a game that will sell 13 copies on your platform".

Cancellation news to follow shortly.

Ubisoft tend to be hypocrites and liars with this sort of stuff

Good job, ubi. Good job.
JackieCruise69  +   659d ago
Lol, how didn't I see this one coming? Should have figured. Wouldn't be surprised if there's a cancellation later down the raoa. They wonder why their games don't sell well on Nintendo systems.. Well, doing shit like this doesn't help in the least, poor excuse, too.
So if this is how they're going to support me, I guess I should support them in an equal way. :)
I'll rent the game for Ps3 when it comes out and call it a day. Unless they use the gamepad in a nice way and make the game at least on par with the other versions; I aint buying it. I'm not going to throw my money at a company that's going to expect me to keep buying delayed games and DLC-less versions. I'm not going to just bend over to these third parties just to be treated like shit.
Actually, maybe I'll put my money to good use and support some indie games instead, because it seems indies are more reliable and more deserving lately.

I'm going to do the same Jackie. I'm going to Game fly this for the PS4 get the Platinum trophy then send it back. Then buy the version for the Wii U if it DOES come out later this year. Sick of third party's S*** lately. Their only getting the money for the version I wanted in the first place.

Also look at Warner Bro's games today saying screw owners of the AO were not fixing anything that's broken in the game even though we spent $50. Then they further shafted Wii U owners for taking away the DLC. Getting a little out of hand.
