Activision didn't expect Xbox One and PS4 to sell this well

Sales of next generation games and consoles have exceeded Activision Blizzard's expectations, offsetting weaker than anticipated sales of Xbox 360 and PS3 software during the firm's Q4 2013. That's according to Kristin Southey, senior vice president of investor relations, via SeekingAlpha. (Activision, Industry, PS4, Xbox One)

I kinda figured the ps4 would sell this much off of price alone.

Even with no great expectations, they covered themselves by making Destiny multiplatform and showing off how good it looks on next generation platforms at the Sony's E3 conference last year.

TBH I'm a bit surprised as well. I still anticipate we're going to have a "smaller" gen than last gen. We won't have all three consoles being great sellers, I can tell you that much. We'll need to wait for another year to see how this trends. Will PS4 CONTINUE to be sold out (it's been sold out for 3 straight months now)? Will X1's launch in more regions skyrocket sales?

I think it will be a larger gen, mainly because the consoles on average, are more affordable than they were at launch last gen. I think this will mean more people will adopt consoles, and relatively sooner.

Also, there will likely be new services and business models, that will make consoles attractive to folks who normally wouldnt buy them.

Actually the Xbox 360 cost 300 bucks for the basic unit and 400 bucks for the premium version. So the PS4 is 100 bucks more than the 360 was at launch. That being said I still think it will be bigger because many Wii gamers aren't going to upgrade to the Wii U and will likely go where the games they want are at. RPG fans will go to PS4 and Motion Control gamers will go to Xbox One (especially after Nintendo failed with Wii Sports Club. Kinect Sports Rivals at least has new sports and looks amazing graphically lol). Nintendo fans will stick with the Wii U obviously, but that's maybe 50 million tops (Wii sold 100 million, gamecube sold 22 million).

I don't think affordability has much to do with it. We have a saturated gaming market, too many choices, which results in a splintered market where people tend to simply buy the "known variable" (i.e the brand they're familiar with) and stick with it. Plus, the macroeconomic conditions worldwide are still pretty poor compared to how it was back in 2005-2007.

If we're lucky, we'll have one breakout mega-hit console that sells as well (maybe even a bit better) than the last-gen consoles. But then the other consoles/platforms will struggle to find their niche markets and won't be nearly as popular. What I'm describing is the same as how every single gaming generation (with the exception of SNES/Genesis and Wii/360/PS3) has gone.

@dread22
The ps4 is $200 cheaper than the ps3 was.. And while the xb1 costs more than the core 360 did, there's a lot more value added considering the HDD and kinect.

One average, it's a cheaper proposition. This time around.

@dedicatedtogamers
What are you on about? The market isn't splintered. There are really only 3 viable next gen consoles to choose from, just like last gen, and the gen before it. By the end of this gen, console will be being sold in regions that they couldn't be before. Hell, china lifting their console ban could alone be enough to push unit sales beyond what they were last time.

Affordability has a ton to do with it, because it would mean entering underserved market late in the cycle, like the ps2 was able to do.

Thats because Activision is a office full of $ crazed monkeys who dont give a sh***t about gaming......they are so out of touch that they resort to buying all the cards.

I keep hitting the agree option & nothing happens :(

On topic, I knew they'd do great. We gamers are a passionate bunch and we just spent like what, 8 years stuck in one gen (albeit a pretty great-gen). It was only obvious that we'd flock for the next best thing. I know i did xD

Congrats to Sony & MS.

You think you can do better at the helm? Man take a step back and realize that activision is about making money, they cater the quick profitable software. You dobt need to buy their stuff, but your high moral for the gamers spiel is tiring.

Some companies make good games some bad, its for theconsumers to decide with their wallets.
mhunterjr  +   69d ago
It new they would sell fast, but it's faster than I expected. The xbox is just beyond what I expected and the ps4 is well beyond what I expected.

Good job to both parties really...
SpideySpeakz  +   69d ago
I believe you can thank social media for that. Without sites like Youtube or Facebook, I don't think PS4/Xbone would sell 500k units in the first month. This world has changed since 2005, and more people are on the internet.
WeAreLegion  +   69d ago
Absolutely. The internet has changed culture entirely.
AnEwGuY  +   69d ago
You only needed to look at the lack of effort put into Ghosts on X1/PS4 to know that. They are the epitome of a "shiny port".
LAWSON72  +   69d ago
New engine and some innovation would be nice.
AnEwGuY  +   69d ago
Didn't happen all of last gen...don't see it happening anytime soon.
BG11579  +   69d ago
It's funny, everyone in the gaming industry and business and specialists weren't expecting this much sales... I'm starting to think that unlike gamers, they are completely oblivious about gaming.
Gamer666  +   69d ago
No they aren't. They have to be conservative so that their stock prices keep climbing.

If they would've made aggressive estimates and the consoles sold less that would send their stock prices down. By making conservative estimates and saying the consoles of the future exceeded estimates their stock prices will increase.
BG11579  +   69d ago
If it's so, then well played well played...

...Because Activision are one of the stupidest developers out there - No Skill, no intelligence, No morale's!

Console sales have been on the increase tenfold year on year for the last decade. How can you not know this & consider yourself a leader in that marketplace!?

It was very clear that the 2 big hitting consoles were both going to break sales records. The stupidest part is the mass rise of sales of consoles had a big part to do with Activison in the first place.

Was going to say. "yeah thanks to the PS4" :)

Giving ps4 & xb1 equal credit for combining for over 7m units sold. Hardly equal.
