PS3 Won't Upscale PS1 Or PS2 Games.

There have been a lot of rumors about whether or not the PS3 will upscale PlayStation 1 or PlayStation 2 titles. We spent a few minutes running our retail systems through a few tests, and came back with these impressions. IGN threw in Resident Evil 2 from the PlayStation 1 and tried to see how it would look. First of all, there is no upscaling of PS1 titles at all, and if you have an HDTV, you'll need to change your aspect ratio from 16:9 to 4:3 to play these games.

the 360 does and they look better than the original version with extra anti-aliasing.

hey...at least the PS3 can play close to %100 of their library of PS1 and PS2 games. 360 as of now can only play around 200 titles.(and growing with time though)

trust me sony, they are not saying booourns.

If it's possible they might just add upscaling in a firmware update.

I don't know about anybody eles, but having a HDTV is useless without the HD content. I think Sony will fix this issue in time.

Although, not upscaling PS2 games won't keep anyone I know from buying a PS3.

I think Guitar Hero II is reported to not work on PS3. I know.. only one game.

The game works, but the Guitar controller is not recognized. Hopefully the official ps2 controller adapters will work, or they will release some sort of update to support it.

The ps3 can upscale any ps3 game to whatever resolution, so I don't see why it doesn't do it for the psone and ps2 games.

When Sony said, they were adding the PSOne and PS2 hardware into the PS3 they literaly meant just that. The reason why the 360 can do it, it is because it's emulating and therefore it can modify the video output before is sent to the tv. This is one of those areas where emulation has its advantages. This is good and bad, the good: most games will work out of the box, the bad: don't expect any improvement on any of these games.

This is bad news. I was considering a PS3 purchase for the backwards compatibility of PS2 games WITH upsacaling. I don't own a PS2. Now that it is confirmed that no upscaling occurs at all, I am simply going to pass it by.

Alot of folks criticize the 360 backwards compatibility, however it does IMPROVE AND UPSAMPLE the games. I would much rather have an improvement occur, even if only for select titles, than 100% backwards compat with no visual improvement at all.

Halo and Halo 2 looks sweet at 720p with full anti aliasing.
