Is ET: The Video Game (on the Atari 2600) the worst game of all time or simply misunderstood? TFTV give their thoughts on this much maligned game.
Nope. It really is an awful, awful game.
Well need I say more: https://www.youtube.com/wat...
Why did you torture me with that video? What did I ever do to you?
@johndoe11211 Sometimes reality hurts but I' m with you in this one mate.
I never played it so I can't say lol.
I was a lot younger at the time, but I kind of liked it. Especially considering what was available at the time.
Yeah, I've got fond memories of playing this game. I had no idea what was going on though.
Same i had a lot of fun playing it , and finished it a lot of times :)
That's like saying Hitler was misunderstood...
There were worse games like Pac Man for Atari 2600. It was nothing like the arcade version which everyone remembers. This version was so buggy that the ghost would move all over the screen randomly
Yes. You definitely can't judge a game from 1980 by today's standards. My first console game was pong. You had to use channel 3 and play at 2am when there was no signal interference on the tv. The console had a bunch of games; pong, tennis, squash, hockey. All the same game with different size paddles. LOL
The game was terrible.
It's a bad, poorly-designed game, but it is in no way the worst of all-time. Unlike Big Rigs, you actually have a game to work with in E.T. It's not a broken product. Also, I like how the article argues that E.T. couldn't have been fully responsible for the Video Game Crash of 1983. Sure, it could have damaged public opinion of licensed games, but it does seem ridiculous to think that one game could end years of market presence for games. Interesting article, overall. Nice work.
Cheers bud. I try my best! :o)
All I can remember about ET is the neck stretching and then Dying - That was enough for me, fortunately I had Smurfs which was for an Atari 2600 was a super little game
Yup, it was terrible, I remember playing it years ago and thinking WTF? Mind you, the writing in this article is almost as awful.
It's important to not only judge ET in terms of it's quality as a game (objectively bad), but also take into account it's influence on the industry. ET was the game the burst the video game bubble and led to the crash of the industry. There were a lot of bad-mediocre titles that lead up to the game, but ET was the final straw. So with all that in mind I think it's the worst game ever. Yeah, a game like Big Rigs is terrible but NOBODY was anticipating it and NOBODY gave it a second thought. People were legitimately anticipating ET and we saw what the disappointment wrought.
No it was awful in all meanings of the term AWFUL.
