When you've got duplicate hardware lying around, why not put SteamOS and Windows through some comparative tests to see how the new kid on the block performs?
Hmm, not such good results for SteamOS...but, its still in Beta with a long way to go. Valve has a good track record of only releasing stuff when its ready.
It's Linux at the end of the day. Most likely it'll get better.
One of the biggest problems is with the UI component, while it is there, there are a lot of things happening on the underside which do slow the whole thing down a bit, but that is the nature of the Xorg windows system, or XFree86, depending on which basis you use. Becuase the thing is built with multi-terminal functionality in mind (think Windows Terminal Services' granddaddy) a lot of redundancy was built in, which can and probably does add overhead which the system could well do without. Watch Valve redo the whole Graphical engine UI maybe :)
