'Silent Hill 2' Review: Tense, Tragic And Terrifying | Bloody Disgusting

BD writes: "There’s a reason why we still bang on about Silent Hill 2.

Almost fifteen years have passed since we first stepped into James Sunderland’s heavy footsteps and peered at that bloodstain through the fog, and we’re still obsessing over the intricacies of his journey, as though deconstructing the individual parts of this game might offer up the secrets of its oh-so-terrifying alchemy.

For many (unashamedly, myself included) Silent Hill 2 remains the crowning achievement of the Silent Hill series. Reknown for it’s hitherto unique approach to survival horror – so at odds with Resident Evil’s combat-heavy blueprint it was Silent Hill 2 that picked up the legacy set by the series’ disturbing first title, and birthed one of horror gaming’s most darkly disquieting offerings.

The thing with Silent Hill 2 is, it crawls beneath your skin.

And you don’t even know it’s doing it." (PC, PS2, PS3, Silent Hill 2, Xbox, Xbox 360)

Silent Hill 2 is the epitome of the horror genre.
Subtle, surreal, and disturbing.

You see, SH's most terrifyingly juicy secrets lie not in the great gameplay or the superb cutscenes ; but in the detailed significances behind all that is presented to you.

Once you have this experience you will bond with this game for life. How one can deeply love such darkened tale is crazy in and of itself.

thats exactly how i see it the game has so many meanings behind the imagery, more than gameplay or anything.

take the nurses are they just zombie mannequins or expressions of james sexual desires or inadequacies. is pyramid head part of james self punishment and guilt. also maria/mary, james two versions of his wife.

it reminds me of a book called Fear by L. Ron Hubbard in a lot of ways.

Still love this game to this day, the best of all SH games IMO and an absolute classic.

Silent Hill 1-4 are the best in the series, anything after that went downhill.

silent hill 1 and 3 were already ruined by the movies
i hope we can see a great movie adaptation of this game...

since it has no connection with the other games i expect the same from the movies...

Greatest game of all time, as far as I'm concerned.
Nothing in gaming ever affected, changed, and even shaped me in the way experiencing Silent Hill 2 did back in my teenage years.
Like another poster Aaron Colas said, you will bond with this game very deeply. I sure have.

I really wish they hadn't screwed up the re-release so hard.
