lol I actually just got this email about 30min ago. Talk about desperation.

Alexious3731d ago

They are with their backs to the wall and they know it.

Gazondaily3731d ago

Maybe, but its a really good incentive no?

What are they going to do with all those PS3's?

Maybe they'll play all the exclusives and have an epiphany?

"OOOOOOH so THIS is what gamers want! No wonder they were mad at us!"

*Flings controller at *Xbox One Research and Development team member*

"You idiot. And you thought people wanted a camera!"

Naga3731d ago

In fairness, Nintendo has their backs against the wall, yet we don't see them fighting this hard. I think it's good for competition.

TomShoe3731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

Lol, this is grade A stuff.

Besides, $100 isn't that much anyway. I could sell my old PS3 and my whole game collection and get $250+. This is just desperation.

Neonridr3731d ago

@TomShoe - yes but that's for your console AND all your games. This $100 is just for the console.

xHeavYx3731d ago

I don't care if I get $100, it would feel like a downgrade for me

truefan13731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

Come on Microsoft, don't go this route. The XB1 is a great system, don't make it look like you are desperate. As a 360 and XB1 owner I'm not feeling this, its good business, but this move is more than likely to be twisted negatively. Your 2014 game lineup should do the talking, it's the best lineup of all the consoles.

ABizzel13731d ago

I don't think I've ever seen a promotion, where the competitor was offering trade in value for it's opponents console.

What are they going to do with them?

Why wouldn't the PS3 owners just sell their console or trade it in to GameStop and get a PS4 which would still be cheaper, than getting an XBO?

It makes little sense to me. Wouldn't it be better to offer $100 trade-in for an Xbox 360. THe only thing I can think of, is that they'll use this as PR if a few gamers do decide to do this saying even PlayStation gamers are switching to XBO.

I just don't see the point of this at all.

Blastoise3731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

PS3 has the best line up of games this year if you ask me. It's the JRPG machine that just keeps on giving. I have no plans for a next gen console yet.

Who needs next gen when Dark Souls 2, Persona 5 and Tales of Zesteria are all on PS3?

georgeenoob3731d ago

@phear

Desperation? Or good business approach? This will definitely bring playstation gamers to the Xbox.

Ashlen3731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

Wow, what a sleazy marketing campaign. I doubt I had any respect for Microsoft to lose, so this is simply insulting.

I guess they must be pissed that PS3 is still selling really strong while 360 has basically fallen off the radar. PS3 has tons of exclusive games coming out this year while Xbox has had nothing for basically 2-3 years.

One 82,314
PS3 76,516

johndoe112113731d ago

Am I the only one that finds this extremely embarrassing? The word desperation is an understatement.

johndoe112113731d ago

@georgenoob

You're still living in lala land.

raWfodog3731d ago

Or how about just keep your PS3 and buy a PS4 (if you can find one). It's already $100 cheaper than the XB1.

I may get an XB1 eventually but it will be a loooong time and they need to get some tru exclusive games (not available on PC) that I really want to play.

GrizzliS19873731d ago

considering the ps4 is 100 bucks cheaper, how about i keep the ps3 and buy myself the 4?

Gazondaily3731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

@ashlen

What are the "tons of exclusive games" coming out this year? Genuine question.

Razmossis3731d ago

They did this last gen also, with PS2s

MightyNoX3731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

mewhy323731d ago

I agree with alexious. They know that the PS4 is dominating the market and with most all multi console release games having higher resolutions and framerates on the PS4, people are finally starting to believe what the press has been telling the public from the beginning, that the PS4 is the superior machine for 100.00 less than the bone.

SilentNegotiator3731d ago

So lose my PS3 just to make Xbone as cheap as PS4?

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Eonjay3731d ago

it really begs the question: why aren't they extending this offer to Xbox 360 owners... oh man.

DragonKnight3731d ago

@georgenoob: Lol, no it won't. If they keep their PS3 and spend the $400 they would have anyway they can have a PS3 and a PS4 and have 2 consoles better than the Xbox One.

guitarded773731d ago

They could give me a straight up trade and I wouldn't trade my PS3. My PS3 still gets more use than any of my platforms (including PS4, 360 and Wii U).

This is really a lame ass move.

QuickdrawMcgraw3731d ago

Why would I ditch my ps3 when it does a lot more then a PS4.

Death3731d ago

@Eonjay,

This offer targets PS3 owners to bring them to the Xbox One. It also removes consoles from the market and lowers revenue from future software sales for Sony.

Microsoft wants Xbox 360 owners to keep their consoles and buy more software for it.

As for what Microsoft would do with PS3's traded in, theywould scrap them to cut off future revenue.

In my opinion it's better than simply dropping the price this short in the consoles lifecycle. A price drop would be desperate at this time. A $100 buy back for a PS3 is the most logical step to lower the price and remove competition.

To get $100 from Gamestop, you need the newest PS3 model. This is a great offer for people with older models looking to get an Xbox One. If you are in the market for a PS4, this is obviously a bad idea.

DragonKnight3731d ago

@Death: "Microsoft wants Xbox 360 owners to keep their consoles and buy more software for it."

What software?

Anyway, anyone who does this is just insane. The PS3 is currently a better console than both PS4 and Xbox One in terms of available titles and titles to come. Coupled with the fact that it has the best PS+ offerings right now as well, and anyone that does this simply doesn't like good games.

It's a smart move by Microsoft, but anyone that takes advantage of it is either a parent that doesn't know better, or a complete moron.

Death3731d ago

@DK,

What software? I'm guessing the revenue stream that Microsoft shows on their quarterly reports is coming from more than Live subs and 360 consoles sales. I know it's a bit of a shock, but there are actually people out there playing games that are not Sony exclusives.

darthv723731d ago

I have not read the formalities but it would obviously have some sort of restrictions/requirements to take advantage of this offer.

Such as those with ylod system would not simply be able to trade their non working unit in towards an XB1.

Gamestop wont even give you $100 on a system trade in so this is a good deal for those who have multiple and want to sacrifice one for the sake of getting an XB1. Wish i had 1 to spare but i only have the 1 80gb motorstorm model.

Makes me want to track down an old working unit for cheap just so i can trade it in. If it cost me $50 to trade in towards $100 off I still save $50.

Now where to find a working PS3 for $50 or less...?

Kidmyst3731d ago

Does it say if the PS3 has to work? I was using my Slim PS3 until the SP4 came out since my Phat 60Gb died. I doubt Gamestop would give me $100 for a broken one, but would MSFT? They get a Non-working PS3 and that $100 pays for a useless Kinect I get with the XB1 I'll never use.

SmielmaN3731d ago

True fan- lmao. Best line up of all the consoles.... Lol. Man, just step away from the keyboard. You only get one comment and might as well not embarrass yourself with it.... Every article.... Every day.... Just sayin'

DragonKnight3731d ago

@Death: "What software? I'm guessing the revenue stream that Microsoft shows on their quarterly reports is coming from more than Live subs and 360 consoles sales. I know it's a bit of a shock, but there are actually people out there playing games that are not Sony exclusives."

You can't play games that don't exist. I repeat, what software?

scott1823731d ago

Give up a PS3 for that? Why?

Godmars2903731d ago

"In fairness, Nintendo has their backs against the wall, yet we don't see them fighting this hard."

No, but we've seen MS hawking Nintendo's and Sony's launch events. Had people trolling WiiU lines.

ZodTheRipper3731d ago

I got 230€ for my PS3 Slim + 10 games in November. This is not even a good deal.

Also, who in their right mind would switch from PS3 to X1?

BG115793731d ago

Exchanging my PS3 for a Xbone? This is madness!!!!

At this point my PS3 has play value than the Xbone, PS4 and WiiU put together!!!

Why o why3731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

@ dragon....death means multiplats...thats all there's been for the past 3 years pretty much anyway. Ms use this method to force an upgrade. It works. Spin all you want but the 360 is pretty much redundant now. The ps3 will be too at some point just nowhere near as quickly as the 360.

I conclude that it is a good business practice for the reasons death stated but it also smacks of desperation.

JokesOnYou3731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

I honestly don't see what's so sinister about this deal? It's not desperate it's routine business that happens in every industry. Car trade ins, cell phones, tools, old electronics etc all can be traded in for money off the newer product. What's even better is that in a smaller industry you can specifically target your main rivals products to increase your fanbase/sales. I think some folks see evil where there is NONE due to their emotional attachment to a particular brand so it's like "OMG they want me to give up my beloved ps for an xbox!!" -Well yeah, duh....and unlike you many more other folks just want some great games and a great value regardless of brand.

At the end of the day Yes those loyal to ps brand say "hell no", that's fine because the deal isn't targeted to you. It's for the larger portion of casuals who haven't upgraded to next gen who might be interested in X1 or ps4 but might be swayed by this deal. Just because YOU don't see it as a good deal doesn't mean someone on the fence doesnt, same as if I saw a promotion to sell my 360 for money off a ps4...I wouldn't right now as I don't want a ps4, *YET, but a year+ from now when Ill likely want one that may make great financial sense= smart business.

Prime1573731d ago

@truefan1, "Come on Microsoft, don't go this route. The XB1 is a great system, don't make it look like you are desperate."

This coupled with a lot of the other decisions they've made lately (machinima's promotion for example) are exactly why some off us hate Microsoft. This is brilliant as a business decision, but it's throwing their money around and leaves that lingering aftertaste of, "it's just shady practice."

Maybe if they spent all those hundred bucks INSTEAD on improving the gaming experiences...

Christopher3731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

***I honestly don't see what's so sinister about this deal?***

The fact it specifically targets their primary competitor and doesn't leave it open for any previous generation console owner to trade in for a similar price reduction towards an XBO.

You don't see a Toyota dealership saying "Trade in your old Ford vehicle and get a credit towards a new Toyota!"

T-Mobile accepts any other carrier in their deal to help pay off your cancellation fees with your current carrier and they don't require you to trade in any specific type of phone towards the deal.

***What's even better is that in a smaller industry you can specifically target your main rivals products to increase your fanbase/sales.***

Sure, you can do that. Or, you know, you could instead make a better product and improve upon it rather than directly targeting your competitors in the limited scope of gaming hardware.

Targeting specific rivals in this manner in such a limited industry isn't a "good" thing considering what we need more of is competition through product innovation, capability, and the like rather than promoting the selling of your competitors products so you can lose $100 on the sale of you own.

***Maybe if they spent all those hundred bucks INSTEAD on improving the gaming experiences...***

This x 1000000!!!

ion6663731d ago

I would'nt trade my ps3 for that junk. My ps3 still has alot of games coming out for it.

redwin3731d ago

If this deal is on by the time Titanfall comes out then it'll all be relevant . I can see some people with a Ps4 and a ps3 getting a Xbone by selling their old console . Just because it's not a good deal for you it doesn't mean others might not take advantage of it.

Magicite3731d ago

To be honest, I think PS3 still got plenty of life in it, just look at games that are coming this year on PS3. Persona 5 alone will be an overkill!
also this year on PS3:
Tales of Symphonia
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemist of Dusk Sky
Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster
Kagero: Darkside Princess
The Witch and the Hundred Soldiers
Invizimals: The Lost Kingdom...
and many more!

Withdreday3731d ago

lol, Microsoft's marketing department never ceases to amaze me...

Humble much?

kickerz3731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

The offer is for 360s and ps3s. How convienient you guys leave that out to make Microsoft look bad.

scott1823731d ago

For Titanfall? That's why? I think Infamous looks miles more fun than Titanfall all day long. I will be sticking with getting a PS4 when Infamous rolls out. If Titanfall is good I will get it on PC.

Anarki3731d ago

My PS3 just broke a week after I got my PS4. Wonder if it would still be eligible. Would do this if it came to the UK, possibly.

UltimateMaster3731d ago

I'd trade in an Xbox One to get 2 PS3s.

BattleAxe3731d ago

I would never get rid of my PS3 for an Xbox One, what a joke.

fenome3731d ago

@death

Are you an accountant or financial adviser? Do you currently own a bunch of stocks in Microsoft or Sony? Honestly all you do is bash Sony and praise Microsoft based on revenue, not entertainment value. If you like gettin screwed in the wallet 'cause that makes you feel like a true contributor, cool. That's not my style though, I like bang for my buck.

Plus Microsft makes A LOT more money in software, and that has nothing to do with Xbox, it's Windows. The Xbox has deep pockets because it gets to dip its hand in that Bill Gates money, it has nothing to do with game sales.

Besides that, I don't really care if you don't think Sony are business savvy 'cause they're the ones that are actually getting my money.

miyamoto3731d ago

Talk about Self Incrimination since XBone reveal!

UltimateMaster3731d ago

It also means, keep your Xbox 360, don't buy the Xbox One.

badz1493731d ago

desperation or not, this is just dumb! trade in the most complete multimedia and gaming machine on the market at the moment for an inferior next gen machine. this is not even worth a thought when you can still keep your PS3 and pay the same price and get a PS4!

if you have PS+, this is even a dumber deal. where are you gonna play all those awesome "rental" games PS+ gives you?

this deal is great if only it also apply to broken PS3s! trade in that and pay $400 for the Xbone, and then sell it back for $460 WITH the warranty and you'll have enough money to buy a PS4 and a game or a year worth of PS+ = WIN!

vigilante_man3731d ago

Barely legal.
Shows desperation.
Scared of PS3?
Embarrassing.
Final throw of the dice?

Does anyone really know what they are doing at Microsoft's gaming division?

Shall we show all the great features and games our new console has? No! Lets pretend to the world we have equal graphics power and lets do our best to throw money around even at Playstation owners from last gen...

They could either trade in their PS3 to Gamestop and get a PS4, or just sell it online...And probably get more than $100.

MasterCornholio3731d ago

@dericb11

Thats the main reason why i kept my PS3 even though i bought a PS4.

Excuse me while i go play Metro Last Light (thanks PS plus)

T23731d ago

yes crazyglues is 100 percent right... It is a good marketing campaign by MS in theory but just a few "minor" problems..
1. PS3 actually has the best games right now, including dark souls 2 coming, GT, etc...
2. PS4 is already 100 bucks cheaper, so you could sell your ps3 for 50 bucks or even give it to a friend for free and still come out even LOL.

however if you had aspirations to get both next gen consoles, this may be an easy way to do it. not sure what gamestop is offering for ps3

Anon19743731d ago

That was my thought. Hmm...Gee. Keep my PS3 and buy a PS4 for $400, or lose my PS3 and buy an XBox One for $400. Wow, that's a tough one. :)

osu22duke3731d ago

I would do this but i already traded my launch ps3 in to Best Buy when they were offering a $100 gift card. Used that on a shiny new xbox one (that controller was too good to pass up).

Snookies123731d ago

I wouldn't trade in my PS3 even if I got a free X1. I love my PS3 too much, and there are too many great games coming out for it this year.

VENOMACR12273731d ago

Why do people think this is sleazy, stupid, desperate, etc etc? How is it any different if you go to GameStop and trade in a system towards another system? I'm sure GameStop will give you $75 for your PS3. It's just a promotion. Stop being butt hurt over it.

Seems like it especially if people are saying they have gotten I lot more from selling it elsewhere.

But Damn that wording they sure as hell aint playing around.

With these kind of deals isn't usually the previous product they offer to credit? I don't think I have seen one offering to recycle a competitor's product.

Aces173731d ago

I knew the Sony fanboys would eat this up.

TomShoe3731d ago

Not everyone who criticizes the XBO is a Sony fanboy. Chill.

xPhearR3dx3731d ago

I'm a PC fanboy if anything, but this is a sign of clear desperation. If Gamestop, Amazon etc does it, it's one thing. But for Sony direct competitor that's currently losing to send out this kind of email with that wording? Yeah, they're trying really hard.

Arkardo3731d ago

Just look at truefan1 comment, one of the gratest Xbox fanboy on n4g, he is very sad about this man, you shoul be too.

I don't know why you would bother... it's not just sony fanboys riled up about this. I do find this sleazy, I mean this is literally getting rid of the competition by grabbing any of their products as they can and trashing them... If i were to get rid of my ps3 i would rather trade it into gamestop or something and not only might i get more out of it than 100 dollars, someone else can buy it for cheap and enjoy a ps3. Like i said... this is sleazy and i dislike it.

I laughed when I read the title. It's hilariously desperate. They are literally sending out mass emails asking people to send in their competitor's old console along with $100 in exchange for a Xbox One.

Short of hosting discounted Xbox One kiosks on the side of the street, this is about as desperate as it gets.

Alexious3731d ago

It's also a bit weird since December sales were good for them, but they may have understood that the road ahead is very rocky for the Xbox One.

Why target PS3 owners and not 360 owners? The PS3 owners aren't really their audience, otherwise they would be on 360.

It's like a company saying to bring them their Mac to get a reduced price on a Windows PC.

Death3731d ago

Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 are bringing in much needed profits and revenue for Microsoft and Sony. Offering $100 to take their own product off the streets is not a good idea. By targeting the competition they take future revenue away from Sony and increase their userbase.

I would rather see Microsoft offer $150 or give a game or two for PS3's though. Not much incentive to offer PS3 owners an Xbox One for the same price as a PS4. Sony already has more demand. Sony making this offer to 360 owners would be much more effective.

DragonKnight3731d ago

"Offering $100 to take their own product off the streets is not a good idea."

Unless you're Microsoft who's never been good at keeping support up on their consoles (3rd parties are what's keeping the 360 barely afloat right now) and you want your current userbase to migrate to your new product quickly because that's where your money is going to be coming from from now on.

NO MICROSOFT thanks!! But my Ps3 will change hands from my son to my future grandsons.

MS you should be ashamed! I lost all remaining faith in you!

In fact packing all my 360 games with the console to hit ebay right now.

SmielmaN3731d ago

I did the exact same thing my my old 360 years ago when it RROD on me after 6 months of my purchase. Sold it all for $650 and got a ps3 and a game and never looked back. Although I did borrow the 360 from buddies a couple times to play the proper halo titles.

I would never get rid of my ps3 right now (have a slim and the original fat 60g with all the extras, yes it still works). There's too much to play right now with all the free games on PS+.

mark3214uk3731d ago

why didnt they just knock $100 off from xb1 anyway? they can obviosly afford it if there offering it to trade in a ps3

Christopher3731d ago

Because they want Sony to lose a potential consumer in the process. No other reason.

SmielmaN3731d ago

If they knocked $100 off right now then everyone who bought it before Christmas would be PISSED!!!!! Plus anyone who got them within 30 days of the price drop would just bring their receipt back to the store and get $100 back. So let's say 1 million ppl did the receipt price adjustment. That would mean MS would instantly lose face with the price drop AND $100,000,000 in revenue.

amiga-man3731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

cgoodno
Because they want Sony to lose a potential consumer in the process. No other reason.

Eddie201013731d ago

You can get a $100.00(more depending on accessory trade in) at GameStop and you could use the money for anything, you could even use it to get a PS4 (superior console) for less than $300.00 VS. $400.00 for Xbox One with trade in of PS3 and purchase from Microsoft store.

Christopher3731d ago

I hate it when businesses do this sort of crap. Go play in traffic, Microsoft.

If your product isn't good enough to stand on its own two legs, then solve the issue. Don't undercut your competitor by losing money on each sale in this infantile way to ensure that people go your way over your competitors.

GarrusVakarian3731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

"If your product isn't good enough to stand on its own two legs, then solve the issue. "

Exactly, the fact they would rather take $100 off their own machine just to get it to sell more instead of sorting out the problem properly (TAKE KINECT AWAY!) is pathetic and reeks of desperation.

Edit: Lol, fanboyfailtobeatdown is mad. Mods aren't allowed opinions now, apparently.

"Now, all the internet can see that N4g admins have an agenda!"

No, now all the internet can see that N4G mods know a desperate move when they see it. It doesn't surprise me to see that you don't think this is sleazy and desperate.

"Sony in a similar way for their current low price undercutting tactics"

My god....the fact you think selling at a cheaper base price than your competitor is anywhere near the same as offering to knock $100 off your own console in exchange for your direct competitors console really shows your bias.

"for this perfectly legal, transparent and fair marketing tactic? "

Lmao, take your blinders off and accept how sleazy and DESPERATE MS is.

MetaReapre3731d ago

Hey admin can you ban fanboybeatdown? He annoys me. lol

No, I jest. It's good that even admins will display their opinions on this.

I completely agree with you, there is too much that Microsoft does that I don't like, they should be called out for this by everyone that can see through this rouse...

DragonKnight3731d ago

Just becasue cgoodno is an admin doesn't mean he isn't a gamer and also doesn't mean he isn't allowed to have an opinion.

Only Xbox fanboys think that making any criticism against MS is immediately anti-Microsoft bias. cgoodno clearly said he hates it when businessES (emphasis on the plural) do this. This means he's seen this before and hated it no matter who did it.

This only applies to Microsoft because only Microsoft are doing it.

r2oB3731d ago

@ fanboybeatdown

So admins are not allowed to have opinions? Got it. /s

Maybe you are not aware of this, but there are some people that can have an opinion, and be objective when need be.

You are so childish, you want him to repent for his opinion by denouncing Sony for no reason?

And there is a difference between taking a hit upfront on pricing (what Sony is doing) and trying to get gamers to relinquish something to obtain the same pricing as the competition (what Microsoft is doing). Both are legal, but one directly effects the consumer. Soooo...I could either give them my PS3 for $100 and get a One for $399, OR, I could keep my PS3 and get a PS4 for $399.

This deal blows...how is giving up what is still a $200 console any better than spending the $100 premium for the One? Stupid. It could even be counter-productive, as it ironically may actually subconsciously highlight the value disparity between the systems for some people ("now they want my money AND my PS3 for lesser hardware?").

Just cut the damn price of the One, MS...

Chevalier3731d ago

Exactly keep both and play an incredible library of games. Get PS plus and download free games on both systems as well. The alternative is trade ps3 and get a system with few games in comparison is just stupid. Plus MS is going to drop support like they always do. Like the last 3 years where MS dropped 360 support and converted all their late games to crappy Xbone games.

Whiskeyjacked873731d ago

@georgeenoob my goodness, I come to this site even more often now just to read your ridiculous comments that wrack up the disagrees. I still have a PS3 and the games i just got for free are worth more than this terribly desperate offer. No one is going trade a PS3 with this deal and you are just praying and hoping people will.

DragonKnight3731d ago

Concertoine3731d ago

People are acting like this doesnt include the 360 too. It's a smart move if you ask me, gamestop would normally give us like 40 bucks for a 360 or ps3.

Philoctetes3731d ago

refocusedman3731d ago

Why would I do that? They both play games in the same resolution and Sony's games are better in my honest opinion.

ITPython3731d ago

I feel sorry for any sucker who falls for this and actually trades in their PS3 for $100 towards a XB1. Anybody with a shred of common sense knows that they can keep their PS3, not get that $100, and still get a PS4 for the same exact cost. And the PS4 is the superior system to boot!

It is simply amazing, MS has done everything possible and likely spent billions trying to push the XB1 into peoples homes, yet all Sony had to do was release the PS4 and let the system sell itself by word of mouth.

I still have yet to see a single PS4 ad, yet everywhere I turn I see XB1 this and XB1 that plastered over everything. Goes to show how insanely popular the PS4 is, it doesn't require any advertising but it still outsells XB1 by a huge margin which is advertised to hell and back with MS doing everything humanly possible to make people aware of the XB1's existence.

The fact that the XB1 has even sold a single console shows that this world is full of idiots and/or fools. XB1 would be worth the money if it cost $250 at launch, but it shouldn't have sold at all @ $500.

Magicite3731d ago

lol! atm PS3 is way much more valuable than X1. Ive got huge backlog that must be completed on PS3, yet got nothing that would intrigue me on X1!

reaperofsouls3731d ago

if only they spend their money on new IPs rather than buying PS3s or all this advertising or paying people to make +ve video reviews on youtube, then ghamer might decide to buy a bone

Flames763731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

How you figure that?As of december 31 PS4 shipped 4.2 million sold 3.2 million and the Xbox One shipped 3.9 million and sold over 3 million.Plus the Playstation brand posted a loss of $200 million holiday quarter of 2013.Thats 8 years in a row for a loss on the brand. With over 5 billion loss on the PS3,2 billion loss on the PSvita and now $60 on every PS4 console sold. The Xbox division posted 7.79 billion profit this past holiday quarter. The Xbox division has been posting profit every quarter since september of 2007.There is a reason sony is going bankrupt

TheEnigma3133731d ago

Microsoft has posted a profit not the xbox division; don't get it twisted. They burn through more cash then the xbox brings in. Why do you think there are talks about the xbox brand being sold off?

ZombieKiller3729d ago

Like the same reason you have 1 agree and 12 disagrees?

Don't you think that if Sony lost that much money, they would back out of the games division? Then again, my agrument is null and void in the first 3 words of my statement "Don't you think"

My bad.

360ICE3731d ago

They actually did the same thing with PS2. And if I'm not entirely mistaken, Sony did the same thing with 360 and PS3, which is kind of a harsh message to send.

DarkHeroZX3731d ago

I sold my PS3 for $200 when the buyer found out I was throwing in last of us. I didn't want to sell my ps3 but after getting the PS4 I forgot that there are other bills that need to get paid lol.

Alexious3731d ago

Well, the PS3 won't have many games coming 2015 and onwards. But of course, it has an amazing roster of great games, even though they will eventually age.

Blaze9293731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

how is this desperation? Cell phone companies have been doing this for years. It still happens today with iPhones and Galaxies.

What do you think, they are actually using the devices? No, chances are they are stripped and sold for parts for profit. What's inside of PS3s are more valuable than what MS produced with Xbox 360s. They don't want your "old gaming systems" - they want your PS3 specifically.

How is taking away PS3's people don't even want, helping Microsoft? If a person is keen to this deal, they wanted to get rid of their PS3 regardless. This is just one more alternative to getting something for it.

I see if it said, trade in your PS4 for an Xbox One. Then yeah, that would be pretty funny.

Competition = desperation now on N4G i guess.

Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”

Or how about removing 360 games
From the store
, download them now or else, and, better hope to god that save data doesn’t corrupt, or it’s lost for ever

Nice one ☝️

Zeref4d ago

It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.

DarXyde4d ago

Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.

1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.

2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.

I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.

Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.

PhillyDonJawn4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

@DarX never speak on Xbox again. You lost all credibility with your internet connection comment. Smh you have 0 clue and misinformed yet speaking on something you don't no squat about.

Einhander19724d ago

What has Sony done exactly? You guys keep deflecting to Sony but I am not actually seeing any results, and ai am certain nothing that you can come up with even comes close to what Microsoft has done and what they have tried and failed to do, like tie all your disks to your account on xbone.

Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.

And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.

MrBaskerville4d ago

Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.

With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.

shinoff21834d ago

So killing off physical media is trying what exactly. Ms don't really give a fk if you think they do your kidding yourself.

Is that why Hellblade 2 is digital only?

Zeref4d ago

Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.

MrNinosan4d ago

Guess you're trolling, but if you actually think that's how it works, I'd recommend buying some braincells.

mkis0073d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Volitile vs nonvolitile data. A disc will not corrupt either. A drive can be corrupted.

Einhander19725d ago

This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.

No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.

Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.

Zeref4d ago

Do you know you can put your games on an external and preserve them that way? There are no benefits to discs. ZERO. Idk why some of you are still obsessed with them.

DarXyde4d ago

Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.

If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.

Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.

But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.

Einhander19724d ago

That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.

Einhander19724d ago

Anyone remember games for windows live.

I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.

BehindTheRows4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.

Zeref4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.

Chevalier4d ago

"You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership."

Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.

Tacoboto4d ago

"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."

Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.

You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.

shinoff21834d ago

Yay steam

Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.

Nobody wants this. Sales or the lack of it in the case of XBOX is very telling. I wonder how the adorably all digital series X will fare. Adorably dismal perhaps?

crazyCoconuts4d ago

Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.

Xeofate4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.

Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.

Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.

crazyCoconuts3d ago

The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point

FinalFantasyFanatic4d ago

I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.

Not anytime soon. But they're on that path.

One thing not mentioned in the article is Microsoft's money bags. If Sega had Microsoft's money, they would have still been around as a hardware manufacturer. Xbox as a platform only survives because of the money bags. They can continue making consoles for the core and port to PC.

The multiplatform strategy is only the result of arrogance and misguided leadership that blew up in their face. They thought gamers would jump on Xbox in droves if they knew that many of their favorite games would be only on Xbox. But that's not happening at all. Sales didn't increase. They decreased. Why? Because the dumb asses thought giving away these expensively made games in a cheap service would also turn the tide.

Gamers on other platforms are willing to buy quality. They don't need to be handed nearly free games in a service that aren't even finished and sometimes average in their development. Gamers buy Nintendo games. They buy Sony games. Microsoft groomed their base to not buy games. Even the quality ones. It has always been their plan to go digital. But most gamers still like single player gaming. Still like physical releases.

Microsoft's problem has always been that they don't produce high quality games at the same output as Nintendo and Sony. Actually, they should be producing quite a lot more because they're worth over 2 TRILLION. How they don't have more is ridiculous and no excuse. Buying publishers to take away from competition only backfired. Because it still takes millions of dollars to continue to make those games from the publishers they snatched. Their only choice was to crawl back to their competitors to help sustain those developers because Nintendo and Sony platforms were the ones buying games.

Am I sorry for Microsoft? Hell no! They deserved last place for putting in the least effort. They deserved the fallout for buying up the industry and didn't make a single blip on the radar against their competitors where they now need those same gamers they took away games from to support them. Part of it may have been to cash in on their competition. But the result is the slow death of their platform. They may go 3rd party. They may keep making hardware. I don't give a shit about them to worry about it. I only give a shit about the destructive nature of their industry moves that only negatively affect gamers. They could sell and drop out of the industry and I wouldn't blink. Probably laugh. But not blink. They deserve whatever comes to them. At least Sega put in the effort when it came to games. They just had poor leadership. Microsoft has poor leadership and barely makes memorable games. That's a killer combination. And not in a good way.

Cacabunga17d ago

That would be an insult to Dreamcast.. it had a crazy line up of legendary critically acclaimed games.

Crows9017d ago

I was thinking the same. Dreamcast had incredible games in such a short amount of time. It was truly exceptional.

darthv7216d ago

...and yet all those great games were not enough to sway people from the looming release of the PS2 at the time. Sony just has that kind of brand loyalty.

Cacabunga16d ago

Darth

I do not agree.. Sony had even better games thanks to an unprecedented 3rd party support..
DC had amazing lineup but 90% were arcade games..

88316d ago

@darth:
And Sony showed off "The Emotion Engine" and their real time demos that made everyone think they would miss out on REAL next gen 128bit magic if they jumped in before PS2s polygon pushing monster (and early lack of anti-aliasing with a healthy heap of shimmer + DVD playback) stepped up. PS2 was a fantastic system though with amazing games.

That's not true. Just because Microsoft has the money doesn't mean Microsoft can allow xbox to bleed entire Microsoft money. It doesn't work like they. Also SEC will be watching and investor won't allow it. Lot of reasons why Microsoft can not continue even if they wanted to. SEC regulations is expensive.

fr0sty17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Exactly this... Microsoft is a publicly traded company, mostly owned by their shareholders (Approximately 59.24% of the company's stock is owned by Institutional Investors, 7.73% is owned by Insiders and 33.03% is owned by Public Companies and Individual Investors.). Their shareholders call the shots on the business decisions, and their shareholders want one thing and one thing only, for their stock price to go up. Losses do not make stock prices go up... so if the division continually posts losses on hardware, but shows profits on software and services (which has been the case with Xbox its entire lifespan, for over 20 years now), the shareholders are going to grow impatient and demand they stop making hardware and focus on the only thing that has ever made them money, software and services.

When Microsoft bought Blizzard and Activision for almost 100 billion, I knew that was the nail in the coffin for Xbox as a console... as the shareholders were going to expect a quick return on that investment, and when it didn't materialize, they were going to be out for blood... out to force Xbox to sell those games on as many consoles as possible, "and while you're at it, sell those first party exclusives that aren't selling well on other consoles as well... hell, just stop making consoles and sell games."

If there is another Xbox console generation, it will definitely be the last, but I doubt there even will be one at this point. I think the Xbox division planning on it just in case, but I don't think the project has been greenlit from Microsoft itself. The rumors that they have not yet even secured the chips needed from the chip fabrication facilities ties into this.

shinoff218317d ago

While I usually agree with you . Alot of what was said can just also be asked before any of that.

How long will the shareholders wait? It doesn't appear long at all

Babadook716d ago

I think I get your point. Like just because MS has money does not mean they are content to throw it away on a dying ecosystem. Xbox has to be profitable or “what’s the point?”

ifinitygamer16d ago

Money bags, yes, but are we ignoring that Xbox actually makes a profit on games and GamePass? Hardware is often a loss leader, and they're probably making profit 4 years into the life cycle, but games and services revenue have been very profitable while other parts of Microsoft's business is struggling. Say what you will about the quality of those games, of course, but this is kind of a reverse Dreamcast situation, where the console was dragging down the company and put it at risk of shuttering entirely. Killing that console saved the business and allowed it to continue to make games on multiple platforms. In this case, the service is very profitable, as are the games, and they're also double-dipping into Multiplatform to extend this further, while their hardware is just sort of what they believe to be the best for gamers and their own titles (whether that is the case or not...)

fr0sty16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

The issue is, they aren't selling enough hardware to make their exclusives profitable, and now that they've bought half the gaming publisher/dev industry, they have no choice but to go third party to make a profit... and that is making their shareholders take a real close look at their hardware division under the microscope... why keep making the hardware if the software is all that is making them money, and they continually, generation after generation come in dead last with hardware sales?

Look at a game like Spiderman 2... if it had been an Xbox exclusive, with the amount it cost to develop, it would have been a huge failure... simply not enough consoles out there to sell it on. They would have been lucky to break even.

ifinitygamer16d ago

@fr0sty agreed completely, which is why they're hedging by releasing other games to multiplatform, plus they have PC to make up for the difference in a lot of ways, which is why their games are not complete money pits. It brings up the question of whether or not those exclusives would drive sales of consoles, though. Let's say Spiderman 2 was an Xbox exclusive, it would certainly have pushed console sales, though who's to say how much is anyone's guess.

fr0sty16d ago

That's why you can't rely on just one exclusive, Sony has always delivered on a wide range of solid exclusives, even this generation (even if they haven't been strong on the first party exclusives, they've made up for it with third party). They don't rely on just one "system seller", they have a portfolio of them.

16d ago
JBlaze22616d ago

ApocalypseShadow To be honest Sony has more of a chance to go 3rd party because like you said Microsoft has money, Sony does not. Sony does not have games, Only games they have come from 3rd party. Sony has been losing money for years and you. Saying Microsoft has been putting the least effort just proves you have no idea what's been going on. All Sony has done is repeat and recycle, never innovating or doing something new. All Sony has is brand loyalty nothing else and it shows.

Nah, sega actually makes good games

No, Dreamcast was ahead of it's time and most still have very fond memories of it that had one. It also had some good games on it even in it's short lifespan. Xbox has none of these qualities.

I remember it coming out at the time in a really bad place they hit the market before the PS2 but it was during this transitional time when Sony was promoting the power of the PS2 and so many of the Dreamcast games were awesome but often third parties simply ported the PS1 version increased resolution and performance but rarely fully utilise the capabilities of the console.

I think in the end bad marketing done it in and like the GameCube so many people are fond of it now but at the time it was looked at in the lense of the day and it didn't stack up.

Personally I miss Sega in hardware they took risks that many companies won't

I never owned it, and got the PS2 right when it launched. But there were certain games it had that I was always jealous of that I didn't have access to - Sonic adventure, crazy taxi, power Stone, code Veronica, shenmue, skies of Arcadia. I always thought it was a really cool machine though. I've never heard a bad thing about it though from those that had it.

I only ever saw one Dreamcast, and that was one my friend owned, pity I never got to play it, I wonder what games he had for it?

It would be nice if some of those games got ported to modern systems.

Oh man sonic adventure on the Dreamcast made me so jealous as a huge sonic fan on the mega drive who also moved to PlayStation 2 I never got the chance to play it back in the day either. The Dreamcast in Australia where I am was always relegated to the smallest corner of EB Games it was kind of a strong first indicator that things were not going well at the time.
