Nintendo Looking to Modernize While Maintaining Its Core Business

Since Nintendo's steep downward revision to their 2013 financial forecast, something Nintendo apologized to investors for, due to "unexpectedly weak sales particularly in the overseas markets" during Q3 of 2013, there have been various pessimistic reports and comments suggesting a negative outcome for the future of Nintendo's dedicated video game platforms. However, Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata has maintained that the company will keep it's core line of business while making other attempts to modernize.

As long as they have the Wii U as their main hardware they can't modernize. They lead the handheld market, no worries there (other than "oh noes, smart phones are taking over!!!") but they have a hardware that is 8 years outdated and they can barely even keep up with that. Nintendo lacks initiative at the moment.
