Why 'Thief' will not have multiplayer and why it won't matter

With the introduction of the PS4 and Xbox One, we've seen an enormous jump in games largely based around multiplayer, but one game that has stuck to its guns and will look to deliver a perfect single player blend has to be Thief.

Recently, Thief director Nicolas Cantin discussed why exactly he and his team chose not to implement a multiplayer mode, and what things may serve as suitable alternatives for players. (PC, PS3, PS4, Thief, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

Dishonored and Bioshock and Deus Ex (and the original Thief games, of course) did fine w/o multiplayer. Sad how whenever a game like this comes out, we always have to have THIS article, as if it's assumed every game should have multiplayer. The console-ization my my beloved PC franchises, I tell ya.

Very true sir. I will add to your bubbles, but it looks like you already have the high score.

IN this day and age Sony/Ms have put pressure on Devs to Staple, Duct tape, or glue a MP onto a SP game in hopes of getting more revenue from MP online play as COD took off to tremendous heights in sales.

So I find it very relieving to see a game being made with just a focus on SINGLE PLAYER.

Because not every Game needs Killstreaks, Perks, Glitches, and a spit glued on MP to be a good game.

Usually a good story, great Dev support, and valuable DLC will make a SP game sell very well.

For Gaming Gods Sake just look at the OVER 20 million units sold Skyrim did with it being just a SP game.

Thief now has my money as a focus on SP just made my day as I have 20 other games with MP when I want that online gameplay.

Games like Zelda, Stalker, Half Life, Fall-out and many others with great SP gameplay is what Gaming is all about because I may not be in the mood to play with others but instead enjoy a nice time in a virtual reality world far away from other humans for a while without having to hijack a Space Shuttle just to do it.

I dont agree with you very often, but you nailed it there.

A vast majority of the best games in videogame history are single player only. I havent been into multiplayer since splitscreen died and I dont think I'm missing much.

Mp seems to be a constant rehashing of tired old ideas and whenever someone does try something different it bombs because they strayed to far away from the Call of Duty formula which seems to be the desired norm of the masses.

No, give me a good story, intriguing characters, exciting set pieces and the ability to play the game at the pace I want to play it.

You cant happen upon a camp of enemies in MP and sit and watch their patterns, map their patrols and make a strategy on how to attack them. MP is 90% see someone, shoot.

Does everything have to have multiplayer? No. It just needs to deliver quality.

Everything does not need MP but they should start integrating a different cost system for games. A game that is SP with a 10-12 hour campaign shouldnt cost $60 where a game that is SP with a 20-30+ hour campaign should.
It really does depend on the game.

Well take a look at TLOU. Yes it had multiplayer but the SP could be beaten in under 15 hours and by itself was worth every bit of $60 because the quality was there.

I have no problem paying for a game with just SP, since I dont play MP, so every game I've ever bought might as well have been just SP.

So if youre saying a 12 hour SP game shouldnt be $60, than if Im paying $60 for a 12 hour SP game with MP on it than I should be able to only buy the SP and pay $30.

If thats the case divide SP and MP up. Sell them separately. Then I dont have to pay full price for half a game I dont want. Will never happen.

a great game is just as great with or without multiplayer huh :)

Im glad to see that games such as Infamous Second Son and Thief are focusing on the single player element rather that trying to find a way to create a multiplayer environment.

Agreed. There's plenty of games that are great at MP (ex. Cod/BF) and they will always be there. The MP last for a very long time as well as thier servers. Some great SP games release with a cheezy MP tacked on that community doesn't last much past first price drop. After that I feel devs could have used that time and energy to turn that 8/10 game into a 9/10 game or whatever.

Does anyone view the lack of multiplayer, in a series that never previously had it, as a good thing for, if nothing else, the fact that development for said multiplayer didn't take away from development of the singleplayer itself?

I wont buy games that don't have multiplayer usually that said the fact that this is stealth makes me not want it.
