After the debate about whether Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Assassin's Creed 2 share the same code and assets, YouTube's member 'JohnnyB2K' has created an interesting video comparison between these two titles.
Man, the ‘moving along the ledge’ animation is practically the same
How else is a character meant to climb? AC has awesome character animation but does that mean other games can't have the same animation. Its like saying Call of Duty stole reload animations from BF its stupid.
Lol, my thoughts exactly. (Commented literally seconds after your post XD)
Thank you. This whole thing is stupid lol
The allegation is that they are using AC code and animations. Obviously, there aren't very many unique ways to climb along a ledge. But what are the chances that two developers would have identically sized character models, making identically framed movements, at the exact same speed, from the exact same camera angle. If I compared assassins creed 2 to tomb raider, infamous, or uncharted, you would not see such impeccable similarities. It's quite possible that this code was obtained legally, but monolith didn't build these systems from scratch.
infact had they been using the AC engine, battles would have looked a lot smoother than they did. besides i could hardly care about what bi thinks.this is more interesting and innovative than all AC games combined
Finally! The truth has been spoken!
Plenty of games have way different climbing animations from AC, -uncharted -infamous -darksiders -tomb raider
Granted, it does look quite similar. But, honestly, how else is one supposed to walk across a rope or climb on a ledge? AC is just one of the first games to make it look natural, so if Shadow of Mordor wants it to feel natural, it's no surprise that they look similar in these aspects.
Unless it is exactly the same code, line by line, and animation, frame by frame, Ubisoft has no claim whatsoever. I mean, how can someone climb a ledge or walk a tightrope in a very different and natural feeling way? Is monolith gonna make him do a frontal double flip just so the animation is different? I call shenanigans
You heard it hear first the AC franchise have claims over any future animations of climbing, ledge walking or tightrope walking... /S
There is nothing to debate about this similarity. Of-course walking across rope or climbing ledge movement will be similar. These are natural. If we always go for so called 'copy-paste' debate then every FPS game shares same code and assets. So its just like AC invented it first in a nice way and the other games may have this feature by updating it a bit here and there.
Maybe Ubisoft are afraid this will turn out better than AC. The Middle Earth lore is better for sure.
I don't know about the assets but the game still looks like a lot of fun to me- I am just wondering if they can really pull off what they talked about in the trailer with the "nemesis system" or something like that.
I have always found these types of complaints and "issues" to be particularly aggravating. Largely because I see them as being unfair and just plain stupid. There are only so many realistic ways in which a character can climb a wall, shimmy along an edge, or walk across a rope. Are we really going to raise a fuss over that? Similar animations?
When I first saw the footage I was like dang, that's assassins creed mixed with Lord of the Rings.....Which is awesome. IDC if it uses the same engine and assets...if its fun, I'll play it.
To me this whole thing as the creators of Candy Crush owning the rights to the word "candy" which is ridiculous. I'm sorry but you can't own the rights to animations like this.
You are misunderstanding. You own the rights (copyrights) to your creative writing (code) or artistic production. In this case, the speculation is that the code itself has been repurposed for the profit of someone who didn't create it. It's not asserted that someone used *similar* code or *similar* animations. That wouldn't be an issue.
I have issues with Monolith games. They have the buggiest net code I have ever experienced, far worse than BF4. Let's just hope that this game doesn't rely on the internet.
Than can be worse netcode than BF4's? Remind me to stay away from their online games then.
Unless data was actually copied I call it a coincidence. They do look similar, but doing the same kinds of things is not the same as using the same data.
Given that Assassin's Creed II is arguably the best of the bunch, why are people making such a big issue over this? It's not like the guy claiming it was his work owned the routines and stuff he worked on. I'm sure whatever he did was probably added to the in-game engine and it's those values and animations which are being carried across. This game looks amazing and now, with the heritage of Assassins Creed II behind it, it just makes me look forward to the game even more. Stop whining about stuff that makes no difference and enjoy the gameplay video for what it is. A great look at what is sure to be a great game.
It doesn't really matter if a game has been inspired by another. You could call destiny a rip off of borderlands and deep down a ripoff of assassins creed and dark souls in terms of gameplay.
