As consumers of media we often become attached to certain characters and the actors who portray them. Such is the case with the Metal Gear franchise’s main character, Snake. Since his vocal debut in 1998′s Metal Gear Solid, Snake has always been voiced by actor David Hayter. Over the years his growly voice has become synonymous with the character. For most, David Hayter is Snake and vice versa.
It came as a massive surprise, then, when Konami announced that David Hayter would not be returning to voice Snake in Metal Gear Solid V, and the veteran actor Kiefer Sutherland would be taking over the role. Naturally there was a lot of uproar among the community. Despite the backlash, I believe the decision to cast Sutherland as the lead makes sense and can be considered a smart move for Kojima Productions.
