The Xbox One is an interesting console but perhaps the least interesting thing about the Xbox One is its design. It’s big, it’s relatively bland, it looks like a VCR or a set-top box. Turns out plenty of that look was deliberate.
"We were trying to push boundaries, to do something new and inventive"... so we made a box that looks like a VCR. Microsoft have been doing that a lot these days, turning to the past, just look at windows 8 http://uk.images.search.yah...
I'm sure that ms was concerned about heat. They don't want to be in the same situation that they found themselves in the launching of the 360. It may not be the most attractive design but it will certainly run cooler than it's competitor.
The main thing to keep in mind is how much they expect the system to be running. People run their old game consoles, then switch them off to watch TV. This thing stays on all the time, even when switching to TV. In some households, depending on work schedules, I bet the XB1 stays on from the moment the first person wakes up to whenever the last person goes to sleep. I think that is why they designed it with so much open space for cooling.
@Unholy @Mewhy32 Yeah I can tell that the design was for various reasons. That you both stated. With the TV function..I have my xbox one on way way more then I used to have my 360/ps3 on. And that is what I feel they were trying to do. For whatever reason I have been using the youtube app alot more then I ever did on the 360. I think it is because you can turn the app on pretty fast. Drop it in the background to do other things and go right back to it. I have been renting more movies etc....I just have been using it more for non gaming things. Even though I do have a carp load of gaming centric youtube channels I watch. Ohh and twitch I have used on the system.
It does run pretty cool. I dont mind the design at all as its sits in my entertainment center. Sheit now that I look at it all my consoles have disappeared. Except my controllers which always sit in front of my TV.
The 360 case design didn't affect the RROD situation. It had plenty of room inside given the heat output of it's components. The 360 problem was down to the design of the x-clamp and in many cases poor thermal medium. However, I do agree MS went for a bigger case just to make sure they'd not have any repeat of overheating of any kind.
Ashby I agree totally. And I am the same in that I have been using more "non-gaming" features on my One than I ever did on my 360. Just so nobody misunderstands what I'm saying, I'm not saying I'm doing these things INSTEAD of playing games, I'm just doing them on the XB1 instead of doing them on a different device somewhere. I just like that everything is integrated together and can easily be swapped between or snapped.
@BelkingOfSony The problem with Windows 8 is that it was design for touch devices in which it works great. So more like they were looking into the future instead of the present.
You mean.......they were counting in people getting a touch screen tv in the future???? LOL You're trying to hard. Give it a rest.
huh? what the hell are you talking about? I was talking about mobile not TV. Trying to hard to what? You guys really are fanboys hah?
ummm. I have a touchscreen TV. Everyone who has an X1 has a touchscreen tv. With the kinect you literally act like your pressing a button to open everything... so it works just like a touchscreen device. Windows 8 would work well. I will admit they definitely still need to tweek the OS (which it sounds like they are working on)
I like the way it looks, But then again I like simple modern designs. The PS4 looks great too and I am a fan of the Blue Led strip, But I would not say one looks better than the other, in fact they are very similar more so than last gen where the 360 was inhale body shape and PS3 was exhale body shape.
yea,xbox-one runs cooler than the other console. Thats a facet. As for windows 8, its not doing so well, but when your other OS is in over 90% of the worlds computers you can afford to fail. Sony doesn't have that option in their failures and they sure as heck don't have the cash reserves to do it.
"yea,xbox-one runs cooler than the other console. " I should think so too with that power brick outside of the console. MS team of designers/engineers could never have pulled off what the PS4 team did, to have an internal power brick and still function perfectly is amazing. " and they sure as heck don't have the cash reserves to do it." Belking doing what he does best, resorting to talking about each companies financial state because he knows he has NOTHING else on the PS4....sad. Oh well, i guess there are always Vita articles for you to bash on. Oh and the PS4 actually runs COOLER while doing the most important thing (gaming), don't believe me? Check these links out : http://www.eurogamer.net/ar... http://www.eurogamer.net/ar... X1, gaming temp - 49 degrees Celsius PS4, gaming temp - 44 degrees Celsius Yet again, you don't research what you are talking about before commenting, you have a real bad habit of doing that.
So in that line of thinking its ok to go to work tomorrow and take a knap because I got a lot done today. I for one bought a laptop and had no choice but to take windows 8 no option for win 7 anymore. I hate 8 btw and it doesn't make me ok with it because 7 was good.
Damn seriously so you made look like a VCR on purpose! Wow this just made me question your design team!
Doubt you can make anything.
Wth? Does he think ppl are stupid? A rectangular box is pushing boundaries?
I don't think that's true with this giant power brick.
Ironically it stands out well on store shelves.
Its certainly not disapearing from store shelves. (Sorry that was lame )
I remember thinking how big it was....until I got one. YES its bigger then the PS4 and the 360 but its not as big as many make it out to be. The one thing that stands out to me. Is how QUIET the thing is. I hadnt played my 360 in awhile and when I did....BOY oh BOY...i knew my 360 was loud. But after the XBOX one playtime...my 360 sounded even louder. I was thinking DAYUM how did I ever play with this thing being so loud. I mean loud to the point that I had to turn the game volume up a little. SMH. But as for the design...It really does not stand out at ALL. The 360 design shape was unique and stood out. But the box shape. I understand what they were going for...and I and many can tell that they wanted to avoid another RROD at all cost. RROD effected millions...including me...but I never lost money over it. Got it fixed for free. Cant wait to get titanfall and a PS4 later this year!!
It looks like something that fits in with the standard design of Audio/Video systems, looks well. Its always been the consoles that never sat it right, or was awkward to put beside other components. Remember the days of amplifiers, cd players, tape decks and so on, all built to roughly same width, depth and so on... it all fit. X1 fits great with other units under my TV. I am happy MS took this design!
I personally like the Xbox One's design. Sure its no PS4, but it still looks good. The pictures on the internet don't do it justice. The PS4 does look better and is built better but that thing is a dust magnet. My PS4 needs to be cleaned everyday. Oh yeah and how the heck does that thing still has a power brick ? Its bigger than the OG PS3 and that didn't even have a power brick.
There were lots of things that were deliberate coming from MS with the Xbox one. But this is just ridiculous. It's rather large, it has a massive power brick, and it looks like a VCR. How is it meant to disappear?
It doesn't look bad... but it doesn't look good. It's an uninspired design, forgettable. If that nondescript box is what they were going for- something that would garner no attention for its looks- they succeeded in that. But that's a rather radical departure for consoles, which have always strove for unique looks. I think most gamers would rather their system not look like everything else in the entertainment console, just as people who love their cars try to make them stand out from others in some way. So I can see it as a negative point with most gamers. That said, it would be a positive point with non-core gamers... and Microsoft has been courting that crowd rather heavily, so it's not much of a surprise, I suppose.
Please no. That attempt to defend or justify the look of the X1 was complete nonsense. Nevertheless funny.
If you got or are planning on getting an Xbox 1, the design doesn't matter at this point. As long as it functions to your satisfaction, it doesn't matter.
Common sense tells me the *main reason behind XBox ONE's big and blocky design is more to do with ventilation. Remember the "red ring of death"?
Design is design to me. I couldn't careless how ugly or bulky the thing looks like. If this console offers anything that would justify dropping $500 for, I would happily buy the console and just make suitable placement arrangements for the console. Unfortunately Xbox One doesn't have a thing that would justify me buying the system, especially at $500. The Kinect is something I'll never want to use. It failed to really take off on Xbox 360, but MS still bothered with it this generation let alone forcing it in every box jacking up the price an extra $100.
I see what they mean when they say it was designed to disappear but it is not an amazing aesthetic look. I love my X1 but I didn't buy it to look pretty. I do think it is funny that these PS fanboys always say, "I bought a PS4 for the games. Thats all I care about." Then they try to make fun of people who bought an X1 because it doesn't look pretty. Doesn't make any sense.
xbone is super quite & stays very cool, i can hardly hear it on, it may look like a brick but at least it's not loud,
