Nintendo’s Woes Don’t Mean Game Over For Its Consoles

In a rare admission of setback, the president of Nintendo Co. acknowledged Friday that he misread the pace of change in the gaming industry caused by the spread of smartphones, saying it was time for a business structure rethink. But that doesn’t mean Nintendo is ready to abandon its console-centered strategy. (Android, iPhone, Nintendo, Satoru Iwata, Wii U)

Nintendo isn't over, but the WiiU may very well be if Nintendo doesn't figure out a solution soon.

I wonder if this mea culpa is the start of the road to a better, more powerful and more compatible system.

These words are not usually spoken in vain.

I think it will be interesting to revisit this topic in another, say 6 months. By then super smash bros and Mariokart will have dropped, and E3 would be over. Nintendo should use E3 as a forum to reach out to gamers and clarify their vision. Ditching the console is not an option. Another console is at least a few years out, so Nintendo will be in it for the long haul.

Like they did last E3 /s

Nintendo's no conference E3 doesn't show much confidence. Doing pre-recorded demos removes any risk or technical errors, but it also remover the excitement of seeing thousands of people react to any announcements. Nintendo needs to quit hiding behind Nintendo Direct and closed comment sections if they want to get their message out there.

I never said that Nintendo was present at last E3. I said that this year they NEED that forum. I am with you 100% about Nintendo direct. It doesn't hit enough people. E3 already generates lots of buzz, and Nintendo needs to capitalize in it.

I really wasn't insinuating that you did. I was just using sarcasm to bring up the point that Nintendo is so far removed from the public (gamers in general) that they have little chance to get that vision to the people. I am a day one Wii U owner, and have watched every Nintendo Direct and ready every Nintendo interview since I can remember, and I have no idea what their vision is for Wii U.

Originally, they were showing it being a core gaming console with lots of third party support, and online functionality. Sales have kept the 3rd party at bay, but the online infrastructure is nowhere near Live, PSN or Steam. They've had over a year to get it together, but nope... a few changes here and there, but still nothing close to the others. The others have made more advancements than Nintendo has caught up.

I'm one of the ones who wants the Wii U to succeed, but so far all I see is Nintendo riding out this gen with minimal advancements, hoping to end up in the black when it's all said and done. While they make their panoramic view app, the others are working on cloud servers. Nintendo's infrastructure is about where PSN was at the launch of the PS3, and they haven't said s#!t about what their plans are with it.

The problem with Nintendo is their general stubbornness. The "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality only works for so long. I would love nothing less than to see them go multiplat for my own selfish reasons but if they want to stay in the game, they've gotta start changing things up and start giving gamers more than new Marios and Zeldas and bring back that excitement that was once synonymous with a new Nintendo release.

Sega's and Atari's down fall in the console business was because they had a string of systems that flopped and one failed system will not make Nintendo bow out of the console market but if they cannot right the ship with the WiiU and their next few console do just as bad then you will see them drop the consoles and go 3rd party.

I got disagrees in another topic when I stated that the ps3 has more games coming out this year than the wii u!

I own a wii u before people think I am trolling and I am looking forward to tropical freeze I just wanted to highlight part of the problem that it takes them way too long to get new games on the shelves!
