A Few Answers

Threespeech.com got some answers out of PlayStation conserning online user name, backwards compatibility, data transfer and more.

ONLINE USERNAMES
Online, it'll be one user name for all games. You'll get a master ID once you are registered. On some games, you'll be able to set up your own buddy list. If you meet someone playing one of these games, you'll be able to transfer them to your master buddy list. The thinking being that not everyone you're playing Resistance: Fall Of Man with is necessarily someone you'll be communicating with about other things.

BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY
Phil Harrison has confirmed that backwards compatibility will be achieved via hardware, not software. As long as a game meets TRC guidelines there'll be no issues – and this will be the case with 99% of games. No firmware update will be required.

DATA TRANSFER
The easiest way at present to transfer data from a PC to a PS3 is to burn in onto DVD, or use a memory stick or USB hard drive.

DOWNLOADING PS1 TITLES
Phil Harrison has also said that, from day one on the PS3, you'll be able to download PS1 titles from the store onto the hard drive. These will only be playable on a PSP to start with in North America and Japan, but will work directly on a PS3 from the off in Europe.

There are only a few people that I like to have on my "master" Live buddy list. I am always hesitant to put random people that I only see in one particular game on my list. If you can had multiple lists and link them together it will work.

It sounds much better than having different ID's and buddy lists for each game at least =)

Much better

There dies the "zomglol 1 buddy list per game sux lolol"

Pretty cool that PS1 games will be playable on PS3 for the european launch i'd say

EnforcerOfTheTruth3824d ago

...the truth was enforced and another MS statement bites the dust.

CyberSentinel3823d ago

....You mean the fact that there will be Multiple Lists, that you will have to enter all your friends into, Multiple times, for Multiple games?

Again Phony says, "You get what you paid for".

Ain't that the Truth.

Raist3824d ago

And, well, backwards compatibility via hardware ! yay!
I like the "no firmware update required" haha

Grown Folks Talk3824d ago

announced that a while back. if i recall correctly, they are basically putting the chip from the ps2 in the unit as well as the ps3 hardware.

Yeah for now and the foreseeable future all the backwards compatability is achieved by including the ps2 and ps1 chips in the ps3. They're working on an emulation thing, and once they get that working well enough to emulate the games at the same standard as including the old chips they will replace the chips in future models with emulation to reduce costs. That's their plan anyways. We'll see when they can find a way to implement the emulation successfully, but since Microsoft is still struggling with it, I'm gonna say it sounds quite difficult.
