PS Vita: “People look at it as the iPod of handheld gaming,” says Sony boss

John Robertson (VG247) :

"The PS Vita was, is, and perhaps always will be, the video gaming equivalent of a box of chocolates. With touch pads, OLED screens, analogue sticks, gyroscopic motion and cross-platform compatibility, Sony has tried to fit every flavour a gamer could want into one shiny, near-HD package.

Two years on from its launch in Europe and – perhaps as a result of the smorgasbord of features and fiddly bits – many consumers are still seemingly somewhat confused by what the Vita actually is. Sure, it’s a handheld console, but is it the true successor to the PSP? Is it the rival to the 3DS? Is it the answer for people bored of smartphone games? Is it a multimedia device? More recently, is it primarily a companion device to the PlayStation 4? Well, in true Sony fashion, it’s all of them. At least, it’s trying to be all of them."

"PS Vita: “People look at it as the iPod of handheld gaming,” says Sony boss"

After reading "PS Vita: “People look at it as the iPod of handheld gaming", i knew it would follow with "says Sony....."

This is not a dig, I love my Vita & I love Sony, but i just knew.

starchild1594d ago (Edited 1594d ago )

I don't. I look at it as the Vita of gaming. It doesn't need to be compared to the iPod.

I don't compare things to the iPod because I'm not that big of a fan of Apple products.

WitWolfy1594d ago

If I had to compare my PSV to an iPOD then I wouldn't of bought one to begin with!

XisThatKid1593d ago

I entirely agree this being said I don't have the need to compare anything to make my points.

Irishguy951594d ago (Edited 1594d ago )

I just wished they focused on the Vita as much as their home consoles, I bought one as a separate device from them, not an add on to them.

nukeitall1594d ago

Vita compared to iPod? Ridiculous!

It is the Nintendo portables that are the iPod of gaming, both in sales, brand recognition and quality of content.

The Playstation portables are more like the Zune of portable music!

kB01593d ago

except the zune was crap, and the vita isn't

nukeitall1593d ago

Actually the Zune was considered a great a product, it just didn't have the branding of Apple.

I didn't say the Vita is bad, merely that PS Vita didn't define the handheld space, nor is it synonymous with PS Vita/Sony.

If anything, it is Nintendo that has that distinction.

kB01593d ago (Edited 1593d ago )

I'm not an apple fan, but the zune was dated and barely competed with the Ipod touch. It was also more expensive...and had a lower resolution (although a higher quality screen).

The chipset was also weaker than that of the ipod, and it's OS was also very dated and underdeveloped.

It had no market. With Android and apple having the key items to stand out. The Zune was absolutely a poor purchase.

It was a closed source, underdeveloped product.

So yes it was crap. It's not just marketing, it was also software support and hardware.

webeblazing1594d ago

If vita was the iPod of gaming they would be flying off the shelves. KT a shame because I feel like vita is the best handheld on the market. Its great games coming out for it too. All it need if better apps to utilize the screen at least a eBook reader and some of the popular apps on the play store. It will look better to outsiders when they see how versatile it is. It not like adding them will distract they progress from making games.

I thought they took out the OLED screens on the new versions?

SixtyNine1594d ago (Edited 1594d ago )

They did.. The OLED comes at a price...longetivity. It's not good for the long-term. Sony won't admit it tho'. I had my vita in sleep mode for a few days, now its got burn-ins. I've ordered the Vita slim from play asia… the LCD screen, while not as pretty, will be more reliable.

sashimi1594d ago

Really now cause i've left my vita overnight every night in sleep mode for the alarm app or having Youtube running while i sleep. And i have never noticed these burn-ins you speak of.

SixtyNine1594d ago (Edited 1594d ago )

@ Sashimi Yes, it must be my imagination. I guess I just needed an excuse to buy another Vita. Google, Vita OLED burn-ins.

Consider yourself lucky for now, you'll probably have to upgrade sometime.

And it gets worse over time

extermin8or1594d ago

Pretty sure from how the tech works LCD is more likely to get burn in than OLED but whatever, mayybe you were just unlucky.

starchild1594d ago

No, LCD isn't susceptible to burn-in. Individual pixels can get stuck, but burn-in isn't a problem.

OLED, like plasma, can suffer from burn-in if a static image is left on the display for too long. Still, the positives of OLED outweigh the negatives in my opinion. The black levels and contrast simply can't be beat. I also love the viewing angles and the rich colors.

Inception1594d ago

I got my oled vita from september last year and i always put it in sleep mode. Until now it works just fine. Maybe you've just got the defective one, because all of my friend never had those burn-ins problem.

ziggurcat1594d ago

i think i just need to have it explained how you can get screen burn-in when the device is in sleep mode (seeing as how the screen would be completely off)?

mochachino1594d ago

Uh, it more like the google Nexus 7.

Gabenbrah1594d ago

Its more of the N Gage of gaming.

G20WLY1594d ago (Edited 1594d ago )

Wouldn't the "N Gage of gaming" be the N Gage? *facepalm*

Good effort though /s

iamnsuperman1594d ago (Edited 1594d ago )

The title requires context. I guess it is moving towards a predominantly digital distributed form (games are small so easy to download) but one thing holds it back is the memory card prices. They are just on expensive for that to happen

Tidybrutes1594d ago (Edited 1594d ago )

Im the oposite of using it as the ipod of gaming, in fact ive even purchased physical versions of games ive got free through plus as im trying to collect each and every game released for Vita in PAL teritory. (plus a few exclusive imports as things like Ragnorak Odessy and Murumasa Rebirth never got a physical release in Europe.)
