Fans Get Positive Response From Yoshida (Sony) Regarding Shenmue 3

Shuhei Yoshida, President of Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment, has responded to a recent Twitter post from Shenmue fans asking for the revival of the series. The post shows fans holding up individuals letters which spell out "Thank you Sony for listening to us. Please #SaveShenmue." (PS4, Shenmue III, Shuhei Yoshida)

Come on Sony do it!

I'd happily have 1 & 2 HD for PS4 then you can give me 3!

but all yosp says is 'very nice' in his response ..not that much of a positive response to be honest in regards of they are thinking about it.

would be internet meltdown if they did announce it

Shenmue 1&2 HD collection would be in my top 3 most wanted games.

Along with 3 as well.

I don't I can recall any time in gaming where a game like Shenmue came along and was so different to what everyone else was doing, and succeed like it did.

I know there are other examples but Shenmue is special.

We didn't get to see or experience enough of it so it hasn't become tarnished like the FF series has.

Yeah I would love the idea of an HD collection of the first 2 titles as lots of people have probably not played both.

I doubt a Shenmue announcement would be a massive console mover but considering that it has a cult status of sorts now, it could do well.

Guess we will see. THere is a retrospective presentation taking place in March. While its not the sort of place for an announcement you never know.

I think Yoshida is just being kind.

Sega make it a Dreamcast 2 launch title!

shenmue is great and all. but ever since yakuza series have come, i dont care for shenmue anymore, i loved both of them on my dreamcast but i will tell you that until shenmue is done, il get excited for more shenmue.

i would take a new yakuza over shenmue any day, i think yakuza is above shenmue in story and gameplay. and entertainment for that matter
Oh_Yeah  +   340d ago
I played 1 yakuza...the 3rd one, on ps3. And I could have sworn it was meant to be a ps2 game. Charging 60$ for it is a scam, I went right back to the store and demanded my money back. Shenmue on the other hand was ahead of its time.

I owned the first one on the Dreamcast, and loved the game from start to finish. I think that the Sony install base is proof that niche games can succeed. Look at Beyond Two Soul's a million copies on a sub par game. I hope they release a HD up rez of Shenmue 1&2 before 3, so people like me who have missed number two or one can try it out. Wow...this made my monday.

Who the hell said sony is getting shenmue 3 ,if anything Microsoft will shell out millions to get it done and publish it.
Seafort  +   341d ago
I don't think Microsoft know what Shenmue is. So let's leave the proper games to the true gaming console :)

I wouldn't mind a HD version of the first 2 games on PC as well :)
SockeyBoy  +   341d ago
Well they know what Shenmue 2 is at least.
Alsybub  +   341d ago
@SockeyBoy

I don't quite understand the disagree for your comment. Shenmue 2 was released on the first Xbox. So yes, Microsoft do know what it is.
Alsybub  +   341d ago
Ah, now I get it. Your post talked about Microsoft without it being a slur. Hence why I'm now getting disagrees even though I merely stated a fact.

That happens to people talking about ANY gaming machine. N4G is full of trolls. They dog Sony, Microsoft, Apple, Nintendo, and PCs. Not just Microsoft. I'm sure this name-dropping will get all the disagrees...lol.
MrSwankSinatra  +   341d ago
Why would Microsoft shell out money for Japanese game when it's a proven fact that Japanese games don't sell on xbox. Even games like final fantasy don't sell anywhere near what they do on sony platforms. Come on man, use common sense.

@konsuramonsuta try harder for what? So they can fail again? Microsoft needs to take hint and realize that xbox we'll never be successful in the east. It just isn't going to happen.

They did say they were going to try harder in Japan this gen, and that means shelling out money for Japanese exclusives. It also wouldn't be the first time they did it.

Ninja Gaiden
Dead or Alive
Dead or Alive Extreme
Blue Dragon
Lost Odyssey
Tales of Vesperia (Got a PS3 port later though)
Etc...

Although I don't think they would be interested in Shenmue.
KonsoruMasuta  +   341d ago
What's with the disagrees? Are you people allergic to facts or something? MrSwankSinatra said that MS wouldn't pay money for a Japanese game and I was just informing him that tthey have done it before and will do it again.

Anyways, @MrSwankSanatra, I agree with you. The Xbox brand will never be a top seller in Japan. However, I don't think they should just stop trying, because they do have a few followers there.

And like I said before, I don't think they care for Shenmue either.

Amazing.

@MrSwankSinatra

'Why would Microsoft shell out money for Japanese game when it's a proven fact that Japanese games don't sell on xbox'

Did you miss the fact they actually done this with Shenmue 2 on the original Xbox? They paid for exclusive rights in the US so the Dreamcast never saw a localised release for Shenmue 2 in the states.

Granted, this was a US exclusive deal but its effectively a Japanese game. :)

DigitalRaptor  +   340d ago
Someone needs to educate shadyiswin. Listen to Mr. Koralik http://www.youtube.com/watc...

1) Sega won't fund Shenmue 3 by themselves, so someone else will need to.

2) Sony consoles are successful in every region. Xbox consoles are flops in Japan, which is where Shenmue is born and where Sega originates and where its creator Yu Suzuki originates.

3) PS4 is already on its way to be the best-selling console of this generation. Xbone will be just short of irrelevant in Japan. Wii U is not a huge success, but I would LOVE to see a Wii U version for the touch screen capabilities alone. VMU was awesome. however, that console's success hinders it as a place for Shenmue. sad, but true.

4) Sony has already shown a large interest in third-party relations with their consoles, particularly recently XDEV initiative. Sony also has a huge third-party list they compile which has Shenmue at the number #1 spot as most-requested game.

5) The only reason Shenmue 2 came to Xbox is because Peter Moore was vying for a position at Microsoft and so leap off the Dreamcast, brought its third-party games to Xbox and said "seeya" to Sega. He denied North America a Dreamcast version to get in Microsoft's good books.

6) Microsoft doesn't really care about Shenmue in any sense that will benefit them. History tells them this. They aren't going to shell out for a franchise that sunk Sega's console business. They look at their bottom line, and it ain't happening.

1. Except it has already been stated by Phil Harrison that they will be making a strong push in the Japanese market with the Xbox One.

2. Phil also has gone on record in many articles that they are working with many Japanese developers to bring exclusives games to the Xbox One so it can appeal to the Japanese market.

3. Xbox was a flop in Japan but was successful in many other regions. And a potential Shenmue 3 could sell just as well in those other regions and not just Japan.

4. Phil has already hinted at returning to Phantom Dust a small niche game that has a cult following from the original Xbox days. That game I am sure did not light up the sales chart or push a hundred, million extra Xbox's but it appears Phil/MS sees the potential of it being a niche crowd pleaser, especially in the Japanese market.

History also tells us this.

5. Which brings us to Shenmu, where part 2 appeared on Xbox. If this game were to be developed there is no reason why MS wouldn't want this on their system too. They need the Japanese-centric titles to appeal to that market.

I don't know why you feel that MS will only invest in something if it only makes them millions and not Sony. Especially with the recent changing of the guards at MS and all the articles we have received about what games MS wants for their Xbox One.

Edit:
Also this isn't even a guarantee that the game is even in development.

Im telling you why dont we see Xbox fans pleaing with MS. I dont have a twitter account but I would be like hey...are you guys gonna let PS run away with next gen, make a play for Shenmue!!!!!!

That is so true maybe Sony really is the hardcore platform (hardcore in my dictionary means the gamers who play games other than mainstream advertised AAA). Xbox has had some gems but look at alan wake, sick game no appeal to xbox audience.

Shenmue 1-2 HD + Shemue 3 for PS4, puleaase! Come on, Sony! I'll pay 150euros from my small salary to play those.

Just make sure Yu Suzuki and his team are behind the remakes and sequel. The spirit of Shenmue lies in the minds of the original creator!

I know it's a lot to ask, but hey, we are the core audience that you want to concentrate on so badly. There's nothing more hardcore and revolutionary in video games than Shenmue. It's a fully immersive cultural exploration of two countries and their cultures (Japan and China, a very unusual pair for this sort of topic!). Plus, the story is brilliant and the Japanese voice acting is also top notch in both games.

Woah, I got pumped up! :D

'Just make sure Yu Suzuki and his team are behind the remakes and sequel. The spirit of Shenmue lies in the minds of the original creator!'

Sadly that wouldn't happen. Suzuki left Sega a few years back in favour of an advisory role. He was almost lynched for the 'failure' of Shenmue, I say failure as financially it was a failure.

Kind of sad really as Suzuki is the mastermind behind most of Sega's biggest successes, especially in the 80's and early 90's.

If they were to actually do Shenmue 3, it would no doubt be the team behind the Yakuza games.
Sharp  +   341d ago
@caseh

Surely it can happen!

Think of what Yasumi Matsuno did for SE with Tactics Ogre remake.

Also, we are not talking about Sega, but Sony. All sorts of possibilities open up when Sony sits down and talks about games with the right people.

Mr. Suzuki has also stated, that the license can be bought or obtained from Sega (these contracts are easy to revise, just need Tokyo's White & Case etc. to draw up a legal contract, once all parties have reached consensus).

Call me biased, but I do not accept just any Shenmue or any Final Fantasy etc. I want the right directors and creators behind the franchise.

I do not buy products from corporations per se, but actually very carefully see who and what the 'artiste createur' is. (Very much the same rules lie with films, such as 'no' to Bay and 'yes' to Scorsese).

Call me optimistic, but I think it could happen.

I played Ryuu Ga Gotoku 3-4 so far and from what I've seen from Kenzan and Ishin, they are not too far from Shenmue. However, Yakuza has too much Japanese TV Drama in it (which I sometimes watch as well), whereas Shenmue was more of a spiritual journey always going forward, not staying in one place.

I loved Shen Mue I and II, but somehow I dont want a Shen Mue III. Sega does not have the talent and budget to do such a huge game again.

Tbh there are not much Japanese gaming studios out there that could create such a game that appeals to the West as well.

Look at Square Enix for example or look at the Resident Evil franchise and how Capcom managed it. I just don't want to be disappointed.
OrangePowerz  +   341d ago
Why does everything have to appeal to the west?

I do think that Sega would have the team that could do it, all I say is Yakuza.
Deadpool616  +   341d ago
Sega has the money and the talent to make it happen. It's all just focused on a similar series at the moment.

-> (5 Yakuza Games, 3 Yakuza Spin-off games)
SegaGamer  +   341d ago
Japan alone appeals to me. I love Japanese culture. They don't need to change anything to appeal to the west.
DigitalRaptor  +   340d ago
But you would love it if it was Xbone exclusive, huh?

---

Exactly - SEGA doesn't have the budget, but they certainly have the talent.

That is why one of the big 3 would need to come forward and help them get it made. Which of the big 3 has shown the most interest in getting it made or supporting the cause of the fans? SONY is that company. They have put creative risk into third-party projects before, and already have a strong partnership with SEGA.

Shenmue III doesn't need to appeal to the west. Only to those who enjoy the sensibilities that the series provides. Shenmue sold over a million copies which is great for a niche Japanese adventure RPG. The problem was budget control and circumstance in which Dreamcast was not in a strong market position.

It needs to be the right team, at the right time, with the right support, on the right console. All of those pieces: Suzuki and friends, 2014, fans are rallying to SONY for it to happen, and PS4 is the strongest next-gen console and already successful and ready to launch strongly in Japan.

Who is good friends with Yu Suzuki (creator of Shenmue)? Mark Cerny (creator of PS4). Both of those guys will be at GDC 2014 to provide retrospective of the original Shenmue, and who knows what they will talk about. A Shenmue announcement for PS4 makes sense right there and then.

I don't understand how Sega can have a IP like Shenmue that is loved by millions and not milking the hell out of it and still making Sonic games that no one cares about. Maybe they are just looking at the numbers of sales, but the forget that the first two was on two failed systems, the Dreamcast and the Xbox (still two great consoles). If Ubisoft had that IP, we would be at Shenmue 27 by now!
