The Nerd Who Changed Gaming Culture Forever

Hardcore Gamer: Whether James Rolfe knew it or not, the rise of The Nerd was a moment that changed gaming critique and entertainment forever. (Culture)

AVGN channels that genuine anger I felt as a child playing NES games. His stuff is more profound than what some people think.
Wenis  +   348d ago
Yea I agree. I love all his AVGN videos, but the original ones he did were the best (ghost busters, castlevania, TMNT etc), simply because they are games he actually played as a kid and got pissed off about, so there is a legitimate hate toward them

Never heard of him and I've been gaming since the 80's. I'm not a loser so maybe I don't relate to nerds
Neonridr  +   348d ago
He wasn't around in the 80s (well he was, but he was a kid playing Nintendo games back then, not making internet videos about those games). He only started up in the past few years.
Studio-YaMi  +   348d ago
If you're trying to be funny, you're not.

If not?
*facepalm*
segamon  +   348d ago
I second that.
LightofDarkness  +   348d ago
I would like to point out that you're commenting on a site for videogame enthusiasts. Just think about that. I'd also disagree about the loser thing.

lol. You've been gaming since the 80s because there were nerds around to make them.

Lol, burnnnn....

I loved his early stuff. I do find his sidekick quite annoying, that Elmo video was painful to watch.
sonicsidewinder  +   348d ago
Wah, I'd never seen that.

I've found him questionable at times, but man there's a lot of internet hate there.

I had to do a double-take. I thought that dude In the pic was Screech.
Studio-YaMi  +   348d ago
I enjoy his videos,he has a sense of humor that kinda grows on you,he's not a comedian in nature but he is still fun to watch, plus the nostalgia you get when watching him play these old classics.

I wish he keeps making videos as long as he can.

The AVGN really was a great creation. I think what makes it is that beneath the cursing and face pulling you can tell Rolfe is genuinely an intelligent guy and that the opinions he expresses as the nerd are just exaggerated versions of his real opinions of the games he plays. He's not too desperate to be the funny sweary guy that he'll pretend a game is worse than it is. If there's some good in a game he'll mention it but when a game sucks or has a frustrating element he's great at perfectly encapsulating that sheer nerd rage we all feel.

Still, the greatness of the AVGN is mostly to blame for the fact that eeeeeevery Internet videogame guy is now either angry or a nerd. Nerd3000, Angry Bill, Gamenerd, annoyed game dude, disgruntled goat, angrygeekman. Their embarrassing attempts to play up to their unoriginal gimmick are just depressing.

Not to mention that those guys just play the same games over and over (Happy wheels and that kind of game that has been played by thousands of youtubers before) and are genuinly unfunny and try too hard.
KillrateOmega  +   348d ago
This.

They all just jump on the bandwagon and play whatever game is the most popular at the moment and try WAY too hard to be funny by resorting to overreactions and screaming like girls. They always have that facecam thing going on too. They're just so fake that I don't bother with them.

If you're interested in some genuinely funny and intelligent guys, I recommend checking out TheSw1tcher.

@KillrateOmega

The Best Friends guys are great, especially Pat. They did a quick look at AVGN Adventures and both Matt and Pat gushed over AVGN. You can clearly see Rolfe's influence in their works, but they're very funny guys.

I'll have to watch his stuff. This is the first I'm hearing about him.
Metallox  +   348d ago
Watch the Sega CD and Atari 5200 episodes. They're gold for me.
SnakePlissken  +   348d ago
Guy is actually pretty humorous. I've watched quite a few of his vids on YouTube and its funny stuff. Especially if you remember all those classic and frustrating games from back then. Some of you people seem pretty uptight and need to give angry video game nerd a chance before you jump the gun. I recommend the Batman and Freddy vids he does! What a riot!
azshorty2003  +   348d ago
I've been watching him for Years, since the very beginning on Youtube. He's come a long way and he's done so many great things besides his AVGN videos. I've enjoyed all his work and am looking forward to the AVGN Movie he has been making.

AVGN is one of the best thing that ever happened on the internet
AnotherGamer117  +   348d ago
So it seems that I have missed out on a lot by not even watching or knowing this guy?

Nah, just watched a few episodes. His brand of humor is not for me and definitely can't see how he changed gaming culture forever.

James is a great Youtuber and filmmaker. His AVGN videos are still my personal favorite, but his Board James series, You Know What's Bullshit episodes, Cinemassacre movie reviews and many other sub-series he does are all great entertainment. And as someone above said, he comes across as a very genuine, intelligent and affable guy in any behind the scenes videos or Q&A panels and whatnot. Arguably my favorite Youtube channel; I always go back to him xD

Looking forward to AVGN: The Movie!

He makes hilarious and educating videos about old school games.

I recommend every gamer to check his AVGN videos out :)
LAWSON72  +   348d ago
I love AVGN he recently did a 2 part holiday special which had a great ending. I also watch him and mike let's play videos. The originals are classic and the best videos he have done but he still keeps me entertained.

I loved the more recent episode featuring Ikari Warriors. The scrotum song was hilarious. Outtakes were great. The Lester the Unlikely episode had me rollin also.
