Despite having a rough stretch in 2013, Nintendo was able to rally the Wii U in Japan. Nintendo sold 880,088 Wii U’s in Japan in 2013, compared to the PS3′s 824,167 units.
Big deal. Why are we comparing the sales of a console released 7 years ago with the sales of a console released less than a year ago?... Redundant Let's see what happens when Ps4 releases.
Who said it was a big deal? Its just news. And just to let you know, people were hammering the Wii U on a daily basis for its sales in Japan. The fact that if came back and sold as well as it did is good. Competition is good for everybody right?
the fact that it was compared to a last gen console is the prob. competition is great but the ps3 IS NOT the wiius competition. its like this: pso vs. n64 vs saturn ps2 vs. xb(1) vs gc vs dc ps3 vs xb360 vs wii ps4 vs wiiu vs xb1(3) vs sm vs ouya(lol)
These WiiU sales happen to be against the lowest sales the PS3 has ever had for a full year in Japan, according to that articles very own source.
@ Kingthrash360 What do you expect them to compare it to? The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 aren't out in Japan, so it's pretty much this or nothing.
@Knighttrash It's just a comparison. It doesn't matter if both consoles are not from different generations. Have you seen any comparison between GameCube and Wii U, or Xbox 360 and Xbox One? It doesn't matter the date, this is just news.
the wiiu is a great console, and i wish it success...but lets not pour salt in the coffee and call that sh!t sweet.
Zombie stats.. Give me worldwide then say your crap.
It is a comparison, a stupid one, but it is one^^
For the whole year it only broke the 800k mark?
why is the wiiu always compared to the vita or the ps360? its a next gen console, compare it to the next gen consoles or dont bring it up at all. otherwise its disrespectful to the console.
Because, for the first year on the market, that's all there was to compare to. Now the other systems are out (not in japan), and now it's being compared to them.
In this case, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One aren't out in Japan. In most other cases, the consoles are new, so they have a lot more sales / hype than an older (even 1 year old) system. The PlayStation 4 / Xbox One can't continue to sell 1 million systems and when we start to see more of them in stores (around February) we will most likely see the Wii U compared to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
It can't be compared to consoles that aren't released in the region being mentioned.
then dont compare it yet. its too soon for comparisons may as well compare Kobe Bryant to Keven Durant yeah durant scores more but who has more rings? backward.
If you were to do that then it would be winning substantially as it has over a million on both of them in total sales.
Because the ps3 was the only competition the wii u in japan. The 360 and wii are both dead over there. This is still surprising because the PS3 had tons of software support and the wii u had very little. And also because the wii u was selling around 9k a week in japan for most of this year, which shows just how much the likes of monster hunter, mario, and other series can do to help what many called a dead console. This, to me, says that the wii u isn't inherently an unwanted and unlikable product like many proclaim, but that it really just needs the software support to push it. Tried to find the yearly PS3 sales in japan to see how 820,000 stacked up against yearly sales in 2012, 2011, 2010 and so on, but i couldn't. If someone can that'd be cool.
Why was it okay to compare the PS3's library to the Wii U's launch library, but now we're not allowed to compare sales between the two? We were also not allowed to compare the Wii U's library with the PS4's launch library because "that's not fair." The double standards are laughable at best and pathetic at worst.
And people were comparing the PS3 sales to the Wii U sales back when the Wii U was doing badly, it was fine then to say "oh look, the PS3 is better" but now it's not okay to compare them anymore. You're right, this site has terrible double standards.
that's actually a good point, well said. sometimes it feels like n4g exists in its own little bubble... where the vita tv was a good idea and would save the vita: http://n4g.com/news/1349997... or where me stating facts like: Xbox 360 software sales are above PS3's... http://n4g.com/news/1427448... Or that Knack really only outsold SM3DW in just the UK... http://n4g.com/news/1405237... ...Is met with stealth disagrees. I'm sure i could find more examples too. The hostility is ridiculous on this site, i cant imagine disagreeing with fact even if it hurt to see.
@Roobot That's when the PS4 wasnt even out yet :P so how could they compare the sales. THINK
I also find it funny when everyone was saying the Wii U is not a next gen system... Well when its compared to sonys last gen system and it out sold the PS3 for that year all of a sudden we have people saying... no, no, it needs to be compared to the PS4. So which is it a last gen or next gen system??? Just another example of flip floping and double standards. All I see is A LOT of consoles were sold last year and thats good for the industry. When it comes to sales Nintendo fans don't really care. Were not being paid by Nintendo to keep track of there numbers. I hope all current gen systems sell well. The fan boy wars need to come to an end. If one of the Big three fall off who really wins in the end? I know we don't thats for sure. 2014 is going to be a great year for gaming. Lets go back to worrying about the things that matter... the games.
Because that's what people do! There are articles comparing the PS4 sales to the PS3 sales as well.
OH THE IRONY didn't people did that to 3DS vs PSP before Vita came out then Vita couldn't keep the momentum going and everyone stop bashing the 3DS.
i thought sales didn't matter to nintendo fans.......
Sales mattered when the PS3 was beating the Wii U, but suddenly everyone tries to downplay it since the Wii U is doing well. Stop with the double standards.
the ps3 is at 80 million the wii u is at like 5-7 million the ps3 is still beating the wii u and nobody here is trying to downplay it.
PS3 sold 80 million, but lost Sony 3.5 billion dollars. Soooo....yeah.
the only thing that matters is that nintendo stays billions in the black like they have been.
..not this one anyways. Really enjoy mine :)
Atleast someone is happy about it...
I constantly hear people clammering about the PS4 not being released in Japan yet, as if the sky will split harkening it's arrival. There seems to be some kinks in that armor, and I'll explain why: the PS4 is getting a late release in Japan effectively snubbing its home country, secondly where are the games that appeal to Japanese gamers? I would say every game on the PS4 currently appeals to a starkly western audience with maybe the exception of Resogun, effectively shunning Japan in the content department as well. I wish good things for the PS4 and hope Sony has a ton of success with the console, I just don't understand their Japan strategy. Help me out if ya'll have any insight, because I can't see it. What I do see is a lot of Japanese gamers turning their backs on the PS4 for it's over westernization at the expense of Japanese gamers.
Sony has a couple of japanese centric titles, but nothing to go crazy over. Other than that, i agree with everything you said. It makes me sad imo seeing how sony is western centric with their games.
PS4 really wont do any better in Japan
Probably not but it will do better than Xbone. The 360 sold only 19K units in Japan in 2013 and Wii U is about to have more sold in just over a year in Japan than the 360 has had since it's release there. At first both will sell well since they're new but after that we'll see how they sustain the momentum.
it will probably sell between 9-14m lifetime
