I keep mine on standby except for when the disc drive does its "try over and over to eject" business. Then it goes off for a few minutes while I reboot into safe mode and rebuild the database. Frustrating, but I hope an upcoming patch fixes it.

I Tried doing the whole standby deal at first, but when I would get back in I was getting the powered down incorrectly message. After a few times of that BS I shut that puppy down completely!! Im not trying to end up with corrupted data etc.
IRetrouk  +   696d ago
I have only had that msg when the wife has taken out the plug after I have left it on standby, any time I have booted up from standby has worked fine, maybe you did something similar?
BoriboyShoGUN  +   692d ago
@Retro nah believe me dude I watch my PS4 like a baby! I asked my brother and his has done it as well. The first couple times I figured the power might have dropped during the night but nope. Like I said after that Ive just been shutting down completely. I assume its just a bug so maybe after the next couple updates I'll try again.

Always standby for Shuhei Yoshida's updates.
DarkBlood  +   696d ago
i turn it off cuz the last time i accidently left my ps4 on standby stuff was downloading and to my knowledge have no way of preventing that
ZodTheRipper  +   696d ago
Isn't that a good thing?
Skate-AK  +   696d ago
Not if you have a data cap you have to watch.
ArronNelson  +   696d ago
Do you know what downloaded?
kreate  +   696d ago
Idk about the Ps4, but on the ps3, when u get back on, a screen shows up with a list of what was downloaded and updated.

Not sure why Ps4 wouldnt do the same or better.
dantesparda  +   696d ago
It doesnt have the list when you turn it on like the PS3 but you can look under "notifications" and that'll tell you everything that happened. Not to mention, things will say "new" on them

Turn automatic download off? Like on the ps3?

That's not the only reason to turn it off. Before two days ago I would have agreed with Shuhei, not now.

Even though i'm sure he has a very good reason to say what he did, an incident happened with me two days ago that has caused me to stop leaving it on standby for long periods, especially if i'm not at home.

There is a warning in the manual that comes with the ps4, most people don't read these things so it would probably go unnoticed but it states "Do not disconnect the power cord when the system is in standby mode". Believe me when I say there is a reason they put this as a warning.

Two days ago there was an electricity outage in my area while my system was in standby. To make a very long story short, after electricity was restored it took me over an hour to get my ps4 back up and running by fiddling with it and constantly shutting it down and rebooting it.

Initially it would power on but not output video at all. Using the power button on the system would constantly send it into a standby state. It was an absolute nightmare. but after an hour it eventually came up after a reset.

I don't see this as an issue with the system because there is a warning in the manual, it's more of a limitation of the standby mode but one that could probably damage the system if it happens regularly.

I advise to not leave it on standby once you are leaving the house, even if it's on a UPS, UPS' don't have infinite battery life. If you are at home you can put it on standby but only if it is on a UPS.

Sorry for the long post but this is just my experience and i'm hoping it can help someone from not having to go through what i went through.

You can turn off automatic downloads and other stuff done in standby in the power options of settings.
masadiam82  +   695d ago
If you don't want your ps4 to download while in standby but want to leave it on standby, go to settings and turn off the auto updates. I can't remember where but the option Is there.
henrythomas284  +   696d ago
I always leave mine on standby for auto system updates too.
ArronNelson  +   696d ago | Intelligent
I recommend it stay on standby, but once in a while I turn mine off and back on to reboot and clear out stored system caches. I do it on my PC, and would think this should be the same on any gaming console.
patelsanjeed  +   696d ago
I turn mine off cause my electric bill is already astronomically high.
Kyur4ThePain  +   696d ago
Oh please...the PS4 uses less than 9W in standby mode. That's pennies.
IRetrouk  +   696d ago
You know what they say about pennies though dont you?
liquidhalos  +   695d ago
Havent seen that flag in a while :P

Standby is good thing to do rather turning it off

Majin-vegeta  +   696d ago
I just shut my breakers off.
Frankskint  +   696d ago
Out of habit from PS3 days I always turn my PS4 off. Would be kind of hard to break the cycle now, but I guess there are benefits to leaving it on standby from what I read on
ShadowGhost  +   696d ago
I turn my off since I live in a town where power outages concur very often and I hate for it to damage my PS4, plus it's plugged into a power surge protector, but it still can't protect it against power outages. It's a shame really.
OrangePowerz  +   696d ago
Always leave it on standby so it downloads patches while I'm not at home or games when I buy them via the web store. Also so I can use remote play.
Sithlord-Gamble  +   696d ago
If my controller needs a charge, I leave it on standby. Otherwise I shut it off.
DOMination-  +   696d ago
I wosh the ps4 would be like the xbox in this one respect. Where it goes to standby to charge controllers and then shuts down once fully charged. My ps4 also has a big white light whilst in standby. Can this not be turned off??

I don't use it for those two reasons. If Sony ever patch it I'll use it all the time.
johndoe11211  +   695d ago
The ps4 light is orange in standby not white.
DOMination-  +   695d ago
fair enough, I only tried it the once a while back and forget. I wish you could turn it off still.
LANCERBOIGTI  +   696d ago
i turn mine off unless he wants to pay my electric bill:)
Rhezin  +   696d ago
yeah what happens if somebody trips over the power cord or the button to the power strip switch gets hit while it's on standby? Nothing good….
Hicken  +   696d ago
Hardly anything bad, either. It's on standby, just like your PC in standby mode. It's a low-power state that's almost like being powered off, except that it doesn't take as long to boot up.

Just like with your PC, your PS4 would- likely- boot, check to make sure everything was okay, and then move on like normal.
Kyur4ThePain  +   696d ago
Never lived through a power outage?
kwyjibo  +   696d ago
What a coincidence, the NSA recommends you leave your Xbox One on standby.
Kryptix  +   696d ago
Thing is, not every PS4 comes with a camera so that wouldn't be a problem against your privacy.
MegaRay  +   695d ago
Also they recommend you to always plug your Kinect and camera XP
STICKzophrenic  +   696d ago
Mine has mostly been in standby mode, but there is something I'm worried about. Firmware updates to the 360 and PS3 sometimes resulted in bricked consoles. I would wait to update just in case that happened to avoid having issues with mine. Leaving the console in standby, you get the update no matter what and can't wait to see if people have problems with it. I'm wondering how Sony and MS will handle that if it ever happens.
STICKzophrenic  +   696d ago
Nevermind, I turned off auto-updating. Derp.
MasterCornholio  +   696d ago
I use it as a charging station.
heisenberguk  +   695d ago
Turn mine off, I don't like leaving things on when I'm not using them and potentially shortening their lifespan. Updates don't take long to download and I charge my controller with my phone charger
csreynolds  +   694d ago
Sure, if you want higher energy bills and a shorter PS4 lifespan. I think I'll stick to turning mine off when it's not in use.
