We are still far from an All-Digital Console Future

onPause writes:

Recently it was reported that one of the versions of the Xbox One was potentially not going to have a Blu-Ray drive in it and was going to go digital-only as Microsoft wanted to make a device for the future – forward thinking. (Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Killzone: Shadow Fall, PC, PS4, Steam, Xbox One)

Have there been any reports about offline XB1 owners? What their experiences have been like?

is it known how many consoles are offline?

My cable modem blew the other day and I had my X1 offline for around 2 days and it just doesnt fill like the same machine. You loose so much stuff when you arent online its crazy. I wouldnt want one offline.

With that said this we arent ready for all digital stuff is BS. Perfect example look at the Ipad and tablet markets. Do you see a lack in sales in that market..... HEELLL NO. The easy equation is if you can own an Ipad or tablet you can own a console that always online.

And remember when ever you create a new ecosystem you create ways to interact with that system. We are ready we just gotta start the growing pains of all the people that are scared of technology and advancements. They fear losing what they have more than loving what they could be getting.

I'm sorry, but your comment is so far from the truth it's frightening.

Ipads and tablets are absolutely nothing like gaming machines. How you came to that conclusion is beyond me.

An I pad and a tablet can be better compared to a smart phone. I currently own a windows 8 tablet and a smart phone. On my smart phone I have a 5GB monthly internet cap. I use the internet and data on my phone daily and I never cross 4GB per month.

That includes watching videos on youtube, surfing, mail, whats app and downloading software. Had I that data cap on my tablet it would probably be the same.

Now, I own a ps4 and for the past month I have downloaded over 200GB worth of games, this does not include online palying. On what planet are you living on that you utilize that amount of data on a smartphone or tablet within a month?

Consoles primary purpose is for gaming, tablets and ipads may be able to play games but that is not their primary purpose. They do not need the large and steady quality bandwidth that consoles need.

Downloading candy crush is no way the same as downloading Cod ghosts. have you ever played a mp game on a poor connection? it is almost unplayable, you can still use a tablet on a poor internet connection.

Too many places in the world have very poor internet connections and small data caps for us to be even thinking about an all digital future.

This has nothing to do with being scared of technology. Your comment is very short sighted and does not take into consideration the internet limitations of millions of people around the world.

I keep hearing the mantra that the all digital future is coming. I quite frankly think it's absurd. While Internet speeds will incrementally improve over the next 5 to 7 years, the game sizes for next-gen will double. As long as that disparity exists, and I see no reason to beleive it won't, physical media is going to be here to stay. #deal with it

My digital future has already started. I haven't bought a single disc and I'm loving it. Being able to instantly switch between all my games and having the progress pause and be ready for when I go back to it is amazing. The only problem I can see is lack of storage space, but once they patch in the external hard drives a TB or 2 should take care of that.

I'll probably give up gaming if and when it becomes all digital.
