Aggressive Gaming - Disappearing Gaming Trends and Genres

Aggressive Gaming

November 2013 marked the beginning of a new generation of game consoles with the release of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. And with each new generation comes new innovations that define the next era in gaming. But in the wake of progress there are causalities, gaming trends and entire genres that seem to lose their meaning even though at one point the whole industry was all about them.

Here is Aggressive Gaming’s look at some of those lost, but not forgotten features and genres that still have a place in our heart, even if the larger gaming community, developers and publisher have moved onto bigger and better.

I have to admit, sometimes music in Horror games did give away scares. They set you up for it, and then lessened the desired effect.

Music is a tough thing to balance in these games, because in my view, it needs to make you feel fear / dread to turn around that corner or something. Dead Space did atmosphere well, mostly the first game, but the loud noises were just ''whatever''.

Anyways, the genre is definitely on the backburner for now, because they're being turned into action games. Who knows if The Evil Within can give it some life.

On the topic of Gamertags, i definitely agree that it was painful to read during my years of Live. What happened to normal names? Now we just get things like xXx''insert numbers replacing letters''xXx or worse.

This is why i kinda hated to play online as well, because it makes it hard to warn this random player.

I'm not a fan of Fighting and Sports games, so i'm pretty much avoiding those two. Racing games are hit and miss for me, because i'd rather play games like Split Second.

I miss random games about nothing. The games that didn't make sense, who's characters I may not be able to guess what they are, the levels were random, but it was always fun.

80% of games now are Aim the gun, go to next room, spot 3-4 guys, shoot them, move on to next location, checkpoint, continue to next room, more bad guys ect.....

A lot of them feel like empty demo ideas where nobody ever said" hey this really sucks, maybe we should do something different instead"

In other words, most games feel like you're in a movie. You're going through one set piece after another. It's only going to get worse with more cinematic experiences, which is what the devs are going for.

This sounds very interesting, Superhot was a great game to take inspiration from.

I liked the VR version of SUPERHOT. If this ends up being as good I'l pick it up (once available) for PSVR2.
