Analyst Predicts Poor Future For Wii U

DFC Intelligence's latest report predicts that Nintendo's struggling Wii U “sales [are] anticipated to be only about a quarter of the Wii.” To put that into perspective, the Wii has sold over 100 million units to thus far.

It's all because of the confusing name.

JohnnyTower3784d ago

That's part of it. Poor marketing is the other part. People aren't sure if its a tablet or console. If it plugs into the Wii or not. I have to admit, I didn't know what the hell it was until I was paying for the damn thing. Such is my love for Nintendo. Now I'm waiting for reciprocation.

cesuf3784d ago (Edited 3784d ago )

Ive never heard anyone get confused as to whether its a tablet or not. I mean the picture right on the box clearly shows a console and the wiiu gamepad next each other. Dunno how it could get anymore obvious.

The real reason it's having some problems with sales are: the specs don't appeal to hardcore gamers, marketing, and the price is still a bit high for the casuals. WiiU sounds like it's doing some solid sales this holiday though.

Reeze3784d ago

And the Xbox One somehow doesn't have a confusing name? People not understanding the name simply haven't looked into the console far enough.

Pogmathoin3784d ago

I am more concerned about how much an analyst is paid to state the obvious, next he will claim PS4 will sell like crazy.... Duh! Do I need to go to college to get this job?

Not really. If Wii U had that one game EVERYBODY just wanted people would buy it, and I'm mostly referring to mainstream gamers. For one the system doesn't come with a game like Wii Sports that's simple family-fun and has lots of short-burst party potential.

Wii U just isn't the 'fun for everyone' console the Wii was and that severely hurts it.

Hardcore gamers including myself are cautious and holding on to our money until there is something worth buying it for. Some have already bought it for SM3DW, Pikmin or Zelda etc. but for me I'm waiting for something new and fresh, because the system isn't exactly future-proof and if nothing interesting happens that isn't MK8 or Smash Bros in 2014 for Wii U it's gonna be massively overshadowed by the next-gen systems that has The Witcher 3, Dragon Age Inquisition, Infamous Second Son etc.

Wii U needs not just quality games, but unique ones. A lot of people have gotten Mario'd out because of all the Mario titles Nintendo spewled out since the first NSMB for Wii.

I BARELY use my Wii U. It just collects dust. The only game that I'd buy & looks interesting is Super Mario 3D World. Nintendo better step up its game with the PS4 and Xbox One now released.

kwandar3784d ago

Use ours all the time.

Current faves 3D, Deus Ex, AC4, Zelda WW

iliimaster3784d ago (Edited 3784d ago )

your lucky i wish i had one and thanx for buying a WII U! you did your part tdawg

LOL_WUT3784d ago

Mines also collecting dust I don't even want to pass Lego city ;)

mcstorm3784d ago

Ive found the opposite with the wiiu. Having Mario 3d world, sonic lost world, pikmin 3 and windwaker HD I'm loving the wiiu more than my Xbox one and with Mario kart and super smash bros to come ill be playing it for some time yet. For me it has the best line up of games out of all the next gen consoles as I'm not interested in cod, bf, ac, nfs ect.

You bought a Wii U, and the only game you'd buy is Super Mario 3D World? Then why did you buy one, or is this some pathetic not-so-thinly-veiled trolling attempt?

Metallox3784d ago

175 hours invested in Pikmin 3 ;)

gpturbo813784d ago

when somebody says "it just collects dust" thats just a nice way of saying they dont clean. every console will collect dust, its common sense.

Wii U games that still haven't been ported to Switch

The Nintendo Switch is potentially nearing its lifespan, and several Wii U games haven't found their way over as ports yet.

I think it's better to leave games like AC: Amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash forgotten on the Wii U. Best case, they are mediocre games; worse case, they are very bad. It was a dark time for the Wii U, and the first only exists to sell Amiibo cards, whereas the second was put together in a couple of months with a shoestring budget, and it shows.

The rest of the list does have some really cool games, though. I would love to see a remake of Star Fox Zero with decent controls, and Xenoblade X doesn't require that much modification to work.

How would XCX work without dual screens functionality?

Cacabunga2d ago

Same as Paper Mario color splash. One of the best wiiu games and getting even better with dual screen. Same reason why i prefer Splatoon 1

Profchaos2d ago

This article leaves out Nintendo's most controversial game to date devils Third.
I personally found the cover system really fun in that one compared to at the time most fps games completely lacking one.

Stevonidas2d ago

Devil's Third is HIGHLY underrated.

repsahj2d ago

They should remake Starfox to the switch 2. Very beautiful game during gamecube days.

Chocoburger2d ago

Kirby is always ignored or forgotten by people, so good to see it mentioned here.
Play Kirby Canvas Curse on DS, and then play Rainbow Curse on Wii U, they're really fun and unique 'platformers' without any actual jumping.
