DFC Intelligence's latest report predicts that Nintendo's struggling Wii U “sales [are] anticipated to be only about a quarter of the Wii.” To put that into perspective, the Wii has sold over 100 million units to thus far.
It's all because of the confusing name.
That's part of it. Poor marketing is the other part. People aren't sure if its a tablet or console. If it plugs into the Wii or not. I have to admit, I didn't know what the hell it was until I was paying for the damn thing. Such is my love for Nintendo. Now I'm waiting for reciprocation.
Ive never heard anyone get confused as to whether its a tablet or not. I mean the picture right on the box clearly shows a console and the wiiu gamepad next each other. Dunno how it could get anymore obvious. The real reason it's having some problems with sales are: the specs don't appeal to hardcore gamers, marketing, and the price is still a bit high for the casuals. WiiU sounds like it's doing some solid sales this holiday though.
And the Xbox One somehow doesn't have a confusing name? People not understanding the name simply haven't looked into the console far enough.
I am more concerned about how much an analyst is paid to state the obvious, next he will claim PS4 will sell like crazy.... Duh! Do I need to go to college to get this job?
@fanboyssuck and by calling out one faction you make yourself a fanboy Marriam-Webster Irony:the use of words that mean the opposite of what you really think especially in order to be funny.
Not really. If Wii U had that one game EVERYBODY just wanted people would buy it, and I'm mostly referring to mainstream gamers. For one the system doesn't come with a game like Wii Sports that's simple family-fun and has lots of short-burst party potential. Wii U just isn't the 'fun for everyone' console the Wii was and that severely hurts it. Hardcore gamers including myself are cautious and holding on to our money until there is something worth buying it for. Some have already bought it for SM3DW, Pikmin or Zelda etc. but for me I'm waiting for something new and fresh, because the system isn't exactly future-proof and if nothing interesting happens that isn't MK8 or Smash Bros in 2014 for Wii U it's gonna be massively overshadowed by the next-gen systems that has The Witcher 3, Dragon Age Inquisition, Infamous Second Son etc. Wii U needs not just quality games, but unique ones. A lot of people have gotten Mario'd out because of all the Mario titles Nintendo spewled out since the first NSMB for Wii.
I BARELY use my Wii U. It just collects dust. The only game that I'd buy & looks interesting is Super Mario 3D World. Nintendo better step up its game with the PS4 and Xbox One now released.
Use ours all the time. Current faves 3D, Deus Ex, AC4, Zelda WW
your lucky i wish i had one and thanx for buying a WII U! you did your part tdawg
Mines also collecting dust I don't even want to pass Lego city ;)
Ive found the opposite with the wiiu. Having Mario 3d world, sonic lost world, pikmin 3 and windwaker HD I'm loving the wiiu more than my Xbox one and with Mario kart and super smash bros to come ill be playing it for some time yet. For me it has the best line up of games out of all the next gen consoles as I'm not interested in cod, bf, ac, nfs ect.
You bought a Wii U, and the only game you'd buy is Super Mario 3D World? Then why did you buy one, or is this some pathetic not-so-thinly-veiled trolling attempt?
175 hours invested in Pikmin 3 ;)
when somebody says "it just collects dust" thats just a nice way of saying they dont clean. every console will collect dust, its common sense.
Hey man if Nintendo brings out good quality titles the Wii u future will successful
Same thing was said about the Vita. Some systems just simply don't have it. The Wii U and Vita fall in that category.
Well, Sony abandoned the Vita. That's the main reason the system fails so hard. As long as Nintendo doesn't abandon the Wii U, it will do fine. Maybe it won't be able to compete with PS4 (or Xbox One) but at least, it can be a second console choice, have greats exclusives and won't harm Nintendo that much.
LOL WAIT! You're saying the wii u is in the same boat as the vita?? lol yeah ok tell me all the games that are coming out for it next yeah that could possible compeat with smash, kart, donky kong, X, and Bayonetta? The only time i hear anyone talking about the vita is when they use remote play for their PS4...nothing else really.
Your optimistic attitude is not welcome here.
WiiU sounds like someone who cant speak english trying to say We and You together which already is bad english. Anyways jokes aside, what Nintendo needs is to suprise the whole world with a new console next year and a whole lotta games ready for it(doesnt have to be all exclusive, mix of both multi and ex) and make it such that their hardware is ahead of its competitors and even more closer to pc and boom the rest of the industry will go BONKERS. If that doesnt happen oh well, just release Zelda every year and Mario twice a year and eventually the WiiU will be a distant memory.
"Zelda every year and Mario twice a year". Yeah, no, Nintendo doesn't do that. Also, ditching the Wii U and releasing a new console next year would be following the exact same steps SEGA did. Everyone knows how that ended. Nope, Nintendo needs to keep going with the Wii U, ramp up the marketing BIG TIME, and try to get more games from third parties. And if third parties don't want to make games for the hardware, then Nintendo needs to work harder than Sony and Microsoft to make superb first party and second party games. In the long run, I suspect Wii U will do just fine.
ther have been 7 mario games in 2013 alone so yeah its true... mario milked since 1980's
Beastforlifenoob: I guess you're one of these people that think that Mario & Sonic, 3D Mario, Mario Kart and Paper Mario are all the same thing. Yes, Nintendo "milks" Mario as a mascot. However, the several IPs they have based on Mario are all wildly different, and of those, they usually make only ONE entry per console generation. Two, in very rare occasions.
I think as long as Nintendo breaks even with the Wii U by the end of it's life cycle, then they will do just fine. They just need to steadily get all their IP's out and do a good job of the software, and with 3DS printing money, they will be ok financialy.
I've read dozens of articles saying "Analyst says this about the Wii U". Obviously one of them is going to get it right.
but none of them said it was going to succeed...and chances are still in their favor
I've read plenty that have said Wii U is going to dominate this holiday season (doubtful, but I believe it's going to sell better than most expect). Either way one analyst is bound to get it right.
Dang wiiu was sold out at the walmart, target, and bestbuy of my large populated area.
Yep, been saying it for a year, this thing is dead, shame and a disgrace to the predecessor the Wii.
Please stop. You guys have been repeating this since the DS was launched in 2004. It is not even funny anymore. GBA > DS "what a disgrace for the gba" DS > 3DS "what a disgrace for the ds" GC > Wii "what a disgrace for the GC" Wii > Wii U "what a disgrace for the wii" Every console launch some people just repeat the same shit all over again.
Wake the F up, sales numbers are facts not opinions. Denial is the first step.
analysts dont know anything
I think Nintendo should revived some dead franchise that has alot of fans. Like megaman or crash bandicoot. Thats how the WiiU will catch up with PS4 and kills x1
Activison own Crash Bandicoot. If the franchise is destined to the same fate as Spyro and if sony wasnt interested in the franchise I wouldn't mind Nintendo buying the rights.
Sony doesnt need crash to succeed thats why I doubt they will buy it. Not to mention they have ratchet jak sly and ape escape to revive rather than taking risks
If I were Nintendo, I would focus advertising on the Wii upgrade. They have already started to do this to some extent. That said they did NOT mention that Wii accessories can be used, and that it allows for full backwards compatibility (something neither competitor can provide). It should have been named WiiHD.
I like the Wii's codename Revolution! That would have been perfect. I would never have guessed Nintendo would call itheir next console Wii anything.
One analyst says something positive another comes and says something negative.....jeez I wish i could sit around all day and do nothing but say s**t and get paid for it, kinda do already but its waaaay different.
Analyst maths: Wii U has sold approx 5 million in one year. Average lifespan of Nintendo console is 5 years. 5 x 5 = 25 Done
Actually, Wii U sold about 4 million on its first year... which is, incidentally, what the PS3 sold on its first year, or close to it. If things were as simple as you put it, then the PS3 should have sold 28 million units in the 7 years it's been out... not 80 million. Wii U could end up selling as little as 20 million, or as high as 90 million. Right now, we really can't predict anything with any sort of accuracy, because the Wii U has been out for only a year, and the PS4 / Xbox One just released.
It sold 4.5 million. And that with so few games and bad ports. Think about how much it could sell next year with all those great exclusives coming out.
Just make a GameCube 2 buff said. Jk. But that would be cool. I think Nintendo can save the Wii U but its like they're not even trying at all.
AHHH gotta lovd these "predictions" lol funny, i was reading something similar to this about the 3ds a few years ago. yeah you all remember? all the analysists predicting the failure of the 3ds with their all seeing third eye lol. -_-
haha, i remember PS3 also having that shit happen when it originally came out
With Smash Bros, Dokney Kong, and X just over the Horizon, I'd have to disagree with this one
i'll probably buy one this year and then at the start of next year i'll get PS4. that + my PC, 3DS and Vita and i should be set for now XBone can wait until kinectless comes gotta love next gen nonsense that eats my wallet... always...
