Ico designer Fumito Ueda on emotion, missing deadlines and parting ways with Sony

Edge :

Fumito Ueda really can’t talk about The Last Guardian. It’s in his contract. The designer left SCE’s Japan Studio back in December 2011, but returned as a freelancer to see his game to its conclusion. Still, his creative work on the project is now mostly complete – interpret that as you will – so the Ico and Shadow Of The Colossus designer is able to find time to give us a rare interview about the mechanics of emotional interaction and the shape of SOTC’s map.

The ICO-franchise is the most 'unice'-one i've played so far

ado9083780d ago

To be honest at this point of development on the last guardian, I can care less if he left or not. He hasn't done shit for a whole generation

Transporter473780d ago

Well Ico did miss the Playstation and went to Playstation 2, so same thing with the Last Guardian its coming to PS4.

AngelicIceDiamond3780d ago

@Ado a bit harsh but you are right he hasn't done really anything this gen. No announcements except reassurance the gae is still coming.

The announcement came E3 2009 and now its 2013 with new and improved hardware out. Wow that is quite a ways.

I know this cliche but hopefully next E3?

Love Ueda, but he left to make mobile games. How does the most creative person in the gaming industry take that path? Now I know how people felt when Picasso started painting the weird stuff.

You might find this funny and ridiculous to say but i assure that "NINTENDO" is the reason behind this mess between Ueda and Sony , Nintendo always want this guy to make Zelda games because ICO / SotC inspired Nintendo and for some reason Nintendo thinks that his games had the Zelda vibe , Nintendo wants to settle some things up secretly to let everyone think that Ueda isn't being forced to go to Nintendo so in that way "at the moment" he will be on the Mobile games market and make it as if he will suddenly go to Nintendo as if nothing happened , we all know that Shigeru Miyamoto will stop making Zelda games soon after the New Zelda game on the Wii U , a part of me saying that Nintendo planned for all that since the beginning so you might expect this to happen anytime and i assure you that .

Dayum! I never knew about this! Im going to keep this comment in mind and as time passes by and I see what you just mentioned play out in real life my mind will blow up

rainslacker3779d ago

Why would they need all that pretense? All he would have to do is ride out his non-compete clause which is likely a year.

He stated when leaving Sony he always wanted to finish TLG.

If he wanted to go to Nintendo, there is no reason to try and be all covert about it.

DigitalRaptor3780d ago (Edited 3780d ago )

I honestly have no idea why he's gone to make mobile games. Probably a fresh venture.

But I just don't get it. He makes games that are lasting and considered works of art. Mobile games don't have that kind of appreciative legacy-based audience. Mobile games are short and sweet, gimmicky experiences that are only remembered as cheap fun.

That is how I consider them. There are great mobile games, but they don't have any real legacy as far as i'm concerned. He should go to a popular gaming platform like the 3DS and make an awesome handheld game that will be appreciated in the long-term.

If you want to loose lots of money while employing a genius, Fumito Ueda is your man.

Daman Shelley from NoobFeed writes - Dragon's Dogma is truly a one-of-a-kind game, and there really is no other game like it, but there are a few that come close. I can still hear the title screen music in my head after nearly 12 years. Loved every minute of it.

MrNinosan94d ago

I have no issues filling my time til DD2.
Granblue Fantasy: Relink, Infinite Wealth and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will probably me more than enough.
More terrified I won't be done in time.

DivineHand12594d ago

Try not to burn yourself out before the game releases. This is going to be a long and immersive RPG like the first one.

The games in this article are all great and I believe the people who are excited for Dragons Dogma 2 probably already played most of those games.

For now, I recommend you prepare yourself for long play sessions if you will be picking up Dragons Dogma at launch.

I've played 15, and I wouldn't consider any of those underrated TBH. Some of them are pretty high rated.

banger88129d ago

That's amazing, Gamingbolt actually put all 15 games on the same page.

shinoff2183128d ago

I. Not seeing anything on that list underrated. I never played concrete genie, the ASTRO vr,and one other but I forgot the name already. Nothing on there was underrated at all imo.

persona4chie128d ago

There’s only 4 of those games I never played, and no most of those aren’t underrated.
