CD Projekt RED on 'The Witcher 3': 'It's very easy to overdesign'

Coming out with your third installment in such a dense and full world, such as The Witcher 3's, can be a very difficult, daunting task for developers, but they know what features must be in the game regardless of what else is added to it.

CD Projekt RED gameplay producer Marek Ziemak recently talked about the amount of new features and density they can add to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, as long as they do not neglect core features that must be in the game for all players to be able to access it. (PC, PS4, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Xbox One)

Going to be my personal GOTY - CD Projekt Red has never failed to deliver.

Hopefully they don't fail so I can get GOTY edition

Historically, they haven't believed in charging for DLC. So there's no need to wait for a GOTY edition, just get it at launch and enjoy the free stuff they add in.

Idk if this will keep true for consoles... There are other costs related.

Very few devs stay "clean" forever...

“That’s our approach, but at the same time, we don’t know what the final policies are. Things might be changing. There’s a lot of heat right now. From our perspective, we’ll always choose the most gamer-friendly solution. And on the platform where we have control – which is PC – we’ll release on GOG day one and DRM-free.”

Ill play on PS4, no doubt, but I doubt it will be free.

For an example of an over-designed game with way too much fluff and weak core mechanics, see GTA V. Solid game but fell way short of the hype because they spent so much time making stupid mini-games (playing with the dog, tow truck missions, etc.). Good to see designers being mindful of this mistake.

The worst part is that all those omgyoucandoanything activities rewards you exactly the same. Nothing.

People can be mad and yell and get butthurt, but, in this aspect, they have SO much to learn from Saints Row franchise. Complete a set of side activities/missions on SR? Great, here's your unique ability/gun/perk. Killed 10 cops quickly with headshots? Enjoy your huge XP bonus! Etc.

Major flaw in GTA.

Also RDR didn't have these flaws. Everything was connected. Finished treasure hunting? Bonuses! Got that nice clothing challenges all covered? Unique perk.

Ok, you get the point.
