Trolls Try to Brick People’s Xbox One With Fake Instructions Promising 360 Backwards Compatibility

A picture has been spreading around in a rather viral way since yesterday, apparently originating from 4chan, and providing fake instructions to enable Xbox 360 backwards compatibility on Xbox One.

It's a trolling attempt to brick people's consoles.

I'm surprised Microsoft would leave a backdoor method to easily access the debug menu for their consoles. Hopefully in an update they can block users from accessing it. There's no need for a regular consumer to have access to that sort of stuff anyways.

It's probably for future use as part of the "every xbox is a dev/debug console" feature. Still, you're right, it shouldn't be this easy for anyone to access right now and end up bricked... surely it should be something that only those with the correct credentials are given access to rather than something sub-Konami Code.

like if a developer has a certain peripheral that they plug into the machine it enables the feature or something. Something as simple as a USB stick or something. But to be able to access the dev mode with 4 simple controller clicks is kinda dumb.

These aren't "options for people". The deal where every xbox one can be a test unit thing isn't for *everyone*, people will have to be approved and allowed access, it's not going to be a free-for-all. This is where the functionality should be revealed, when the end used has the credentials, such as a token/voucher/PIN that allows it... not just after a few presses of buttons.
