X-Play Exclusive: GTA IV Console Battle

Adam Sessler gets some time with Newsweek's N'Gai Croal and Kotaku's Brian Crecente as they discuss Grand Theft Auto IV and what it means to the 360/PS3 console war.

TUFFnNYC5839d ago

Wow never been first here. Anyway, so what do we get from this? Nothing. They know as much as we know already. However, imo DLC will not be a significant boost in terms of exclusive sales. They arent releasing exactly what the DLC entails and its coming out months later. People lose interest in it. At that time we will have other games to play. 360 will have Gears 2 and PS3 will have R2 and Killzone2. Feel me?

ion6665839d ago

theres gonna be so much other stuff to do i predict xbox 360 will be obsolete in feb.09.this and metal gear life is good

.....life could be simple.

sonarus5839d ago

Precisely. How they plan to use unknown DLC as a selling point makes me wonder. This is the primary reason why i think DLC will be lame or there is some kind of strings attached. If you got the DLC deal to get more ppl to play GTA on your system, then why not tell us what it is so we can make that choice. You can't advertise DLC and have someone say oh what is it...oh we can't tell you but its coming.

Proxy5838d ago (Edited 5838d ago )

Microsoft paid a lot for that content, and they either had no idea what they were paying for, or they knew what it would be; I'm guessing they knew what they were spending their money on.

But, if MS does know what the new exclusive content will be, now is the time to tell us, when the big sales numbers will be made. Yet, they haven't told us what the DLC will be, and I have my own suspicion as to why; you can form your own opinion.

In the end though, you can't go wrong with either version. Two thumbs up R*!

Below: Actually, when I heard about MGS4, I had a pretty good idea what it was going to be like. I had my suspicions when I first heard about GTA IV; you never know with these kinda things, and I thought GTA IV might end up being a remake of Frogger. Serious: You at least know the general idea of the game, a new FPS, a new RPG, etc. We know nothing about this DLC as far as I know. It could be anything from a few extra missions, to a whole other city.

KingME5838d ago

You can to do that, and that is exactly what is done everytime a new IP or a sequel is announced. When you were told MSG4 was coming out or even GTA IV. You had absolutely no ideal what the game as going to be like or what content would be added.

It's just a matter of perspective.

Angelitos5839d ago

There is no question on which is better.

PS3 Version

Better AA, Less frame drops, Less pop-ups, graphics look more realstic, and sixaxis support.

PS3 online is Free
PS3 will also be getting exclusive DLC
PS3 wil have the trophy system

The 360, will only be having a different exclusive DLC, that I'm definetly not paying for.

Ureval5839d ago (Edited 5839d ago )

Dude, seriously. Theyve already said, in almost every corner, that the differences between the two are negligable. The only reason the PS3 may play SLIGHTLY better, is because of the harddrive install, but I would hardly call it (as you so overexaggeratingly put it) "superior". Your comment reeks of ignorant fanboyism. Give me Xbox's online and DLC anyday.

Since this is the gamerzone Ill refrain from personal insults, but you better believe they would have been very very mean.

Edit: If youre a Sonytroll and you know it, disagree.

sonarus5838d ago (Edited 5838d ago )

lol if you are a sony troll and you know it stomp your feet....

DLC for 360 is great and all but i honestly can't use that to base my decision for purchasing until i know what it is. Extra missions are great but if GTA4 is really as good as they say it is, i would probably be better off just restarting the game than paying for some extra missions

Ureval5838d ago

IGN just did a really good podcast about GTA, and talked about what the DLC might be. Its pure speculation but one of the guys brought up a really intriguing possibility. He suggested Rockstar focus their efforts on creating the next GTA for what console generation comes out next, and any future current console efforts be based off of the GTA4 game. IE, instead of future DLC just being new gametypes, why not create completely new cities, and distribute them similar to the same way Tomb Raider Anniversary was distributed as an expansion of Legend.

Future DLC could be completely new cities and storylines, as a best case scenario. Theres no way of telling for sure, but THAT would be enough reason to own the 360. Hell, if I had the PS3 version and the DLC was impressive enough, who know? we might see a bunch of people trading in their PS3 version just to be able to get the 360 DLC.

justgamez5838d ago

be reasonable. Whole cites for 50 million dollars? First it's 2 DLCs for 10 hours of additional gameplay each and now it's whole cities. WOW!

sonarus5838d ago (Edited 5838d ago )

Yes but rockstar said it was extra missions that would expand on the adventures in the GTA4 world. While it is a good idea, you have to think about it this way. Making a new city is like making a new game, you have to think of data size...While its an interesting concept, last time i checked MSoft still had a file size limit on DLC.

Rockstar should really be the ones hyping it but they have dropped so many clues that it is extra missions but people just want to keep speculating about whole new cities. I actually think the DLC will be decent but not that great because if it was, MSoft would have announced it since they have been talking about it so much.

I simply cannot base my GTA4 purchase base on unknown missions. If you are expecting whole new cities you will be greatly dissapointed

was that dood from Kotaku also the jiggalo guy in Duece Bigalow Male Jiggalo? :P

some good points. but nothing i havent already read or heard.

TheExecutive5839d ago

I cannot believe, and i have said this multiple times, that people still believe that the 50 million dollars went straight for DLC.

here is my scenario:

R* went to Sony and explained that they need a money comittment from Sony to keep it exclusive to Sony. Sony offered them a number. MS just came up with a much bigger number and they demanded some DLC for it. The 50 million was used primarily to take exclusivity away from Sony. There is no way MS is dumb enough to give 50 million for some DLC 6 months after the release of the game.

empathe5839d ago

Except for the fact that the engine was built on the 360 and the 50 million happened during development of GTA4, not before.

Proxy5838d ago (Edited 5838d ago )

I think if MS had a trick up their sleeve worth 50 million they would come out and impress a little more. I would expect "Do you want 2 whole new cities and more cars and weapons to play with? Buy the 360 version! Updating coming this fall!" Instead were getting, "Buy 360 version, we have 'something' coming, 'sometime' in the future."

360 fans boast of undefined DLC. PS3 fans boast of insignificant graphical differences. Make your choice; and remember, there is no wrong choice when it comes to GTA IV.

rawd5839d ago (Edited 5839d ago )

Let me take a WILD guess and vote that Sessler says GTA4 is superior on Xbox360. He's so far up Microsofts hoop, he doesn't know how to find his way out.

and PS. you know he wanks to Morgan's pics every night.

Grand Theft Auto 4 Anniversary: The Beginning of the Age of RAGE

Grand Theft Auto 4 is an important game for Rockstar, not least because it was the first title in the franchise to use the newly created RAGE engine.

The series' most overhyped and overrated (especially by critics) more like.

Number1TailzFan359d ago

Not sure tbh.. I'd say 3 was the most overrated. It's pretty rough to go back to, it was quite rough even trying it just after Vice City. Lack of humour and vehicles that had the weight of polystyrene with top speeds to match.

VC & the stories games (even LCS) were all fun. I remember there being a lot of praise for GTA 3 on TV and in game mags, saying it was a Dreamcast killer of a game or words to that effect, and honestly after playing it on PC I didn't think it was that special and kind of dull, had the odd moment of fun but hardly anything. I heard they cut online multiplayer at the last moment for PC, shame because it could've made all the difference.

Would've loved to have seen what kind of cartoony GTA style game they could've done on Dreamcast as a competitor, I bet something along the lines of Simpsons Hit & Run would've worked well.

BlackTar187358d ago

@numberz How can the game that defined a generation and was copied by everyone be overrated? Was a asinine comment

seanpitt23358d ago

For me 4 was better than 5 was more realistic and the physics was on another level! 5 was a major let down in that department!

Number1TailzFan358d ago

@blacktar you have your opinion i have mine. I found the game dull, and it is for the most part. It set the foundation for the much superior SA and VC however.

KwietStorm_BLM358d ago

You say GTA III is overrated because it's rough to go back to and rough to play after Vice City. Your entire opinion is in hindsight. Of course it's rough going back to it today. It came out over 20 years ago. That doesn't take away from the fact that it pioneered a lot and was a paradigm shift for a lot of trends in game development today. Vice City in a lot of ways is just a more refined version of III. It was San Andreas that took the big leap forward from a design perspective. If III doesn't release, who knows if the open world genre would be what it is now. How can that be overrated?

Not at all. My most played game of all time. Truly stunning accomplishment in gaming and with PC graphics mods it just took it to levels beyond anything that came before and possibly even after.

People who moan about it generally tend to be people who played it on under powered consoles and couldn’t handle the more realistic car physics. It was the slightly more realistic approach that made it stand out more. Absolutely love it. In fact I always said Vice city was my favourite of all time. But after going back to the remaster I realised 4 was actually the best.

Profchaos358d ago (Edited 358d ago )

I'm no critic and I consider it the best games in the franchise after recently replaying every entry it's story when paired in conjunction with it's DLC was and still is amazing.

shinoff2183358d ago

Lol. Fun fact. That dlc cost a certain green colored console 50 million for exclusiveness. Un heard of back then. Just to point out the hypocrisy of the 3rd party exclusive agenda going on.

Anyway how the dlc better then the base game by a mile. Lol imo

DigitallyAfflicted358d ago

I've enjoyed gta4 the most from all the others too.

DarXyde358d ago

San Andreas holds a special place in my heart. Honestly, I couldn't get into IV at all. Didn't even finish it. I had some pride in playing it at first because I'm originally a New Yorker, but it just didn't do it for me.

To each their own.

shinoff2183358d ago (Edited 358d ago )

Gta sa for sure. To this day my favorite. My least fav is gta 4 easily. Gta 4 made me feel like the dude in next friday trying to take the cd back talking about i cant get jiggy wit this.

Maybe looking back it would be 3 but 3 did so damn much for gaming in general. . My first gta was of course the top downs so the series has came a long way.

notachance358d ago

Yeah I remembered falling asleep playing the last mission in GTA4.. the most boring protagonist (out of all the voiced protag), and the town is too small.

-Foxtrot359d ago

Not really

Overrated

Boring

Liberty City despite being a reimagined version for the HD era lacked any variety

Lacked the GTA fun charm overall

Niko was bland compared to past protagonists like Tommy, CJ or Victor

blackblades358d ago (Edited 358d ago )

GTA 2 was the best, lol my only owned GTA game. Vice city was alright when I rented it back then. I cant really say which is the best cause those the only 2 games i played but GTA 2 was fun on PC back in the day. Closes game to it that I enjoyed was SR3 and I dont care what people say. That none serious tone was fun enjoyable.

banger88359d ago

Like hell it is. San Andreas was far better, much more fun and a better game overall.

isarai359d ago

Nah, it's a masterpiece in attention to detail and the amount of immersive systems at play. But it really isn't very fun, ESPECIALLY when compared to the previous games in the series. Like tons of things are just wonky and actively kneecap lots of experimentation, or is just lame. Like why do I take huge damage when falling into water, why can I only stand in very specific large trucks when they are moving but not smaller trucks and vehicles, why is the melee combat such a massive down grade from GTA SA and GTA IV, why is the euphoria nowhere near as reactive, why is being drunk using a rasterized animation of staggering rather than the far more entertaining euphoria GTAIV and RDR used when you were drunk, why do npc vehicles barely react to you popping there tires even at high speed, etc etc.

I've always loved playing around in GTA games world. Like the campaigns are great but the majority of my time was always spent just playing in the open world. Yet GTAV is the only game in the series I never really returned to after beating it, it just lacks that fun factor the others have, I spent more time in GTA SA remastered than GTAV

chicken_in_the_corn359d ago

It's one of my least favourite GTA games. It's clunky, the ai is exploitable, it's far too long and the writing is absolutely awful.
