Electronics do not play nice with carpet. I don't even want to know what could go wrong with low humidity and static electrical discharge touching the console on the carpet although it is grounded well.
Hopefully he can get some form of safe mode going to resolve it and then update the day patch. I feel for new console owners who get a soft/hard bricked unit. Ive been there done that.
