There's always Edge.

He loved the heck out of quite a few other great 3DS games recently - glowing reviews on Destructoid. When he's not reviewing, he takes on a pretty good joke persona on Jimquisition, where I think half the point is to make fun of how he used to write.

When something strikes him the wrong way these days (and no, not years ago, he was AWFUL around the time that the PS3 and 360 were getting their bearings), I usually see it as genuine, and move on. Doesn't stop me from waiting until midnight tonight like Cartman when he froze himself to get the Wii, I can't wait to play this. The soundtrack tunes I've heard have been almost reason enough!

Eh... he really doesn't justify himself. He calls the game a "damn good time" with his only true complaints being that Ravio's personality is annoying and the game compels you return to the item shop if you die or have to discover which items (not mentioning that the fast-travel feature brings you right to there, or that dungeons have warp points and escape items). He mentions annoyance with rupee farming, something barely any other reviewers have complained about noting that rupees are too generously given for it to be an issue, and too many nods to past games.

He also says that without nods or Zelda flavor, the game would be a standard action-adventure after he's praised so much. And really, there's no justification for that comment and leaves it vague. How is the game heavy with nods and how can you say it's trying to impress with them? How does that distract or diminish from a well-designed game? Why does that matter if the game is designed well? What's supposed to qualify as a non-standard adventure and what is the line between non-standard and "standard with neat gimmicks"? How is all of that a legitimate measure of quality in a professional review? It's neither objective nor acceptably explained.

I agree, but also don't have a problem with reviewers not being completely, absolutely objective. What I really took away from that review is that the fast-traveling seems geared toward more casual players with stuff to do, if you use it too often you'll get a short game, and for me to avoid it at all costs whenever possible. The prospect of a great soundtrack with, as I've heard over and over, amazing bosses and great level design - that's enough for me! The rest is gravy, but I'll be sure to walk.

I believe that a good review can include personal subjetivity, but it must present it objectively.

For example, "The people who have preferences more suited to enjoy this kind of features may like the game more than those who do not." or "I did not enjoy this, but realize others may because of X reason(s)."

I think it is good to give input to all kinds of gamers when creating reviews. A review should not be just your opinion, but an asessment of quality and what types of people will enjoy those different qualities. Especially in reviews being targeted toward a broad, general audience.

In the end, a review is meant to inform beyond all else. That's part of the reason I think the numerical scoring systems are useless. Textual reasoning should be the draw and focus.

If you don't know the meaning of a word do not use it. A review is an opinion, an informed opinion if you prefer. Opinions are by definition subjective. Objectivity is the exact oposit of subjectivity. Anything and everything you say is subjective and it is impossible for anyone to be "absolutely subjective" since everything can be questioned.

An "objective" review would go something like this: This game uses a 5.1 sound setup, this character is made up of 1000 polygons, while the npc characters are documented as being made up of half of that.

And so on, there would be nothing about story, about how the controls feel, the pacing of the game since all those things are subjective.

Here is how you are supposed to use a review:

Find reviewers whose opinion of the game is similar to yours after you have played the game. This way you make up a small database of reviewers who you know have the same taste as you.

By the way, I'm about two hours in and in love with this game.

It's amazing how many games are lauded for being "innovative," yet they really only *look* different, or have a better story. This game gives no craps about that - they've taken everything about the old Zelda formula, including not just A Link To The Past, but also Minish Cap, Oracle of Ages/Seasons, the original Zelda, and Link's Awakening, and improved all the stuff that needed to be improved.

For example, brilliant and system-pushing graphics aren't really here. What is here is one of the most responsive polygonal games I've ever played, backed by that silky-smooth 60fps framerate, even with the slider up. Jumping off of a ledge is a revelation - in other 2D Zelda games - like, every single one - you froze for a second and then jumped off. In this one, you just jump off, boom.

Sterling doesn't get the point of fast-travel: It's there for that casual player with a job and kids and whatnot, and it seems to not matter at all if you're not that style. Yeah yeah, "dominant strategy" theory and whatnot, but whatever, I'm walking.

It's those little user experience tweaks that make me really appreciate the studio's work. They thought hard about every aspect of the older games, fixed what needed to be fixed, and made sure that the graphics didn't cut into the responsiveness and the movement. It's awesome, short or not... and I have no clue about that part yet.
