No Dolby 5.1 Support On Xbox One Optical Port

SpawnFirst's Angie Santiago writes "It has been revealed that there is no Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound support on the Xbox One’s optical out port. There is a “Surround Sound (BETA)” option, however, but Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound is downgraded to stereo through the optical port. Users who have surround sound headsets might want to be wary of this issue."

Loooooollllololo!! so much for the all in 1 media box

dedicatedtogamers1728d ago (Edited 1728d ago )

For real. And this is announced after Sony revealed PS4 has native support for DTS-HD 7.1 Dolby?

Way to be the best media center on the planet, Xbox One...

Edit @ below

It really depends on why it can't support Dobly 5.1 on the optical port. It could be a driver issue (which can be patched and therefore support can be added) or it could be a hardware issue (if Microsoft used a cheaper/older type of optical port that does not support newer features).

scott1821728d ago

I wonder if that is something that can be patched in later, or a permanent hardware issue?

dansdooz1728d ago

Jesus, the xbox 1 supports 7.1 and dts output via hdmi, no optical output supports 7.1 on any device!
At launch the xb1 cannot pass 5.1 from a cable box, to be patched asap.
Man these articles are so misleading.

GrizzliS19871728d ago

lol "we wait until last minute to tell them just how inferior we are to the competition, so that we can have as little withdraws of preorders as we can"

busted bone, busted.

dansdooz1728d ago (Edited 1728d ago )

What dts has stated is that ps4 will support 'streamed' 7.1 audio, and judging the amount of data it takes up on a bluray i suspect you will have to have a pretty good connection to make use of it

hesido1728d ago (Edited 1728d ago )

Correction: DTS is a different format from Dolby. (No such thing as DTS-HD 7.1 Dolby.)

darthv721728d ago

It seems both next gen platforms are having to patch various holes in their respected boats after launch.

sort of a strange way to do things but....guess its easier for them to fix after the fact than delay and lose precious time.

LonChaneyTV1728d ago (Edited 1728d ago )

The Xbox One supports 7.1 surround sound via through HDMI.

GrandTheftZamboni1728d ago

Sound quality is overrated. It's the rhythm that matters!

We are going forward so upgrade to DTS big DUMMMAY

badz1491728d ago

sorry can't help it! but the PS2 had this since like over 10 years ago! just sayin...

2cents1728d ago

ok, here it is.

Neither the PS4 or Xbox One were, or are ready for launch.
Yet both compaines have released them into the wild (or just about to).

It looking like it will be early spring before the features that have been touted will actually work on both consoles. But, and this is a Big But (lol) the hardcore have an invitation to buy and use the consoles until they are actually ready for human consumption.

So in closing, neither are ready but are still available. Both will be ready soon and offer us the features we havebeen promised and expect from a nextgen console.

MP3/ Audio CD playback / Content streaming from PC / 5.1 Surround / Apps etc. All will come ingood time. Both Sony and MS are guilty of these many shortcomings.

Ashby_JC1728d ago

Agreed. I was just having a conversation with a friend and we feel the same way.

There is just to much that is not ready on both systems.

The way systems can be patched and updated etc. I feel that they really almost are never going to be 100% ready out the gate.

Does it suck..YES. Will it stop me from getting my first launch system...nope.

The one thing thats missing that really pissed me off is TWITCH being unable to stream at launch on the XB1. That was one of the things I was looking forward to.

T21728d ago

I fail to see how ps4 is not ready. Many features such as upconverting dvd came later on ps3 via patch, this is just the way of the future now. I feel fortunate they can modify and add to the systems after the fact.

Gridloc1728d ago

But Sonys message from the start is they are about building a gaming platform first and foremost. Microsoft touting as an all in one media center with some media functions MIA. I think Sony has released what they promised. Microsoft, not so much...

3-4-51728d ago

5.1 wasn't even a huge deal like 6 years can't they include it?

Not a huge deal but seems like common sense

miDnIghtEr20C_SfF1728d ago

Oh... so this is only if you're running an optical cable for sound? Not if you're HDMI everything already?

Ha.. fine then.. carry on.

frostypants1728d ago

Right, but it's HDMI can't pass-through surround sound.

Audio-wise, this thing is a sh*t-can.

Mike134nl1728d ago (Edited 1728d ago )

Kinda misleading. This concerns the audio comming from the cale box into the xb1 which was in beta when tested by kotaku (source used by, which also noted.
"Microsoft assures us that a non-beta option for surround audio throughput is coming, but it won't be there at launch"

Volkama1728d ago (Edited 1728d ago )

PITA if true, not sure if they're just confusing it with the HDMI pass-through surround issue though.

I'll just output over HDMI, my TV has optical out for my headset. Still, shouldn't need to jump through hoops for something as fundamental as good quality sound.

WeedyOne1728d ago

Whats the point of having an optical port if it cant do 5.1?

I thought they build these console with optical ports in case you have an older receiver (like mine) that doesnt accept hdmi, usually you can still get digital surround sound with these older recievers using the optical port. If it cant do 5.1 then it might as well have a 3.5mm jack....

LackTrue4K1728d ago

Isn't the hole point of optical audio for...
....5.1 audio and up?!
I'm guessing it's just a simple pach/update, if not....that port is a big fail.

Starbucks_Fan1728d ago

That pisses me off a bit as someone who really enjoys 5.1.

a_squirrel1728d ago

My brother was thinking about getting one, but we use optical audio for the home theatre. So much for that...

Drewidian1728d ago

Just like there are features not available on the PS4 at launch these minor inconveniences will come with an update. Its just the price of being an early adopter. All of these issues will be resolved on both consoles over time.

GrandpaSnake1728d ago

Minor, dude sound is like that hidden secret sauce. Everyone who is into entertainment usually strives to have a good sound system, usually 5.1 by todays standards. Movies, music videos, games all revolve around that.

LAYLOW1728d ago

DTS 7.1 support ,stop ,its not a issue

OrangePowerz1728d ago

Surround sound isn't exactly some small feature like it's not playing mp3 files. For something that wants to be the media hub for your entertainment that's quite a big problem for many people that have their devices connected to the amp or sound system via optical or even headphones. My surround sound headphones connect via optical.

sevilha821728d ago

This isn´t a minor inconvenience,5.1 dolby is standard to pretty much everyone this days, people have home cinemas in their houses that they will not be able to use on a 500$ machine, people have 5.1 and 7.1 headsets that are now useless, people invested in a tecnologie that is everywhere and now they have to go back to the 90´s and game or use the "amazing"media features of the XboxOne in all the glory of stereo...

And i´m sure you have seen that the games also suport dolby 5.1 and 7.1,it comes very explicit in the back of the cases of the cd´s,but apparentlly the "uber"console of M$ cant...

Just saying.

imt5581728d ago (Edited 1728d ago )

That will be problem with headsets. If somebody has Astro A50 or some Seinheiser headsets...

SniperControl1728d ago

Not everyone has 7.1 Hdmi amps you know...besides some headphones work using optical.

VENOMACR12271728d ago

I'll be the first to admit I don't know a lot about sound systems. Right now I have a 5.1 surround system which connects to my TV. When I play my 360 or use my Blu-Ray player, it all plays in 5.1. I don't plug all my devices into a HUB or anything. The connection goes right to my TV.

What's the problem with the X1?

kingPoS1728d ago

You're real lucky to have a HDTV equipped with HDMI pass through. Discreet 5.1 surround sound is a thing to enjoy

strigoi8141728d ago (Edited 1728d ago )

wow what?

what will happen to some headsets that use optical out for a 5.1 surround sound?
