Lead PS4 architect Mark Cerny explains how his game, Knack, utilizes the new functionality of the next gen console in this exclusive interview.
Knack could have been so much more than what it is.
Like many others, I find it complements the platformers of old and is a lot of fun(which is what's SUPPOSED to matter, after all).
I played Knack last night for several hours and I started to get extremely bored with it. I wasn't expecting the game to be fantastic, but I'm definitely disappointed. Definitely wasted potential on that game.
@ CSI_Quality: Well, then why does Knack have to be so boring? I mean the argument of it being for everyone and for people who are new to the consoles is more of an excuse. Look at the most recent Sly or the R&C game that just came out, those are really good old-school jump'n'runs that are not boring at all, easy to pick up with a lot of variety and a good learning curve, while still being very enjoyable for new players, but also people who are used to consoles and j'n'r veterans. I still think, even though I'm a huge PlayStation fan, that Knack could, no, should have been better.
Neither of your comments disproves what I said. YOU think it's boring. Others don't.
lol @ disagrees. You people are serious? Stop being a fanboy and look at it objectively. The game isn't that great, and the fact of the matter is, if this game was on Xbox you would slam the holy hell out of it.
I find it to be fun... Gameinformer got it right. Surpassed my expectations from the previews.
so this is the great Marc Cerny huh?
Imagine if Nintendo or Naughty Dog had gotten ahold of it. A lot of missed potential
Knack is a launch title, and look you guys can disagree all you want but within 6 months from now, Knack will be forgotten by most. At least until it makes PSN+.
This guy sucks, he made Knack
Even if knack is a misfire, and thats subjective, Cerny has been a bit of a legend since Atari. One badly recieved game can't erase mega-classics like Marble Madness, or even his work on Sonic 2 etc. The guy's an industry treasure.
And don't forget this guys was producing this game a long side developing the PS4. I think if anything, Knack was a project to help the PS4 development process and the software and dev kits. No one can be expected to get everything right 100% of the time. Still looked OK however.
SMH for Knack... Is it really that bad?
The combat is repetitive, enemy variety is somewhat slim, barren environments (there can be a lot of unused space or uninspired areas), weird difficulty (can be hard or easy at weird times). From what I've seen it's nothing too special, the concept is cool and it looks good but not noteworthy in terms of gameplay. Overall it's about a 6, 7 if you are forgiving. Some people will find it fun, others just off the mark from being remarkable.
boring and repetitive. fight the same enemies over and over with forgettable story plus 1080p ps3 graphic
I love knack and am having a lot of fun with it.
I guess you are wrong.
How am I wrong please tell me.
Because of the disagrees. Apparently, people disagree with you having fun with Knack.
:) I'm "not" having fun with it too!!!
Its not that bad
Knack is not that bad, its not that good,it's alright, nothing new besides the name of the game which means its all been done before. Not alot of creativity, story is meh, kind of tacky. Cartoony graphics in the cut scenes are a tirn off for me. The action is so simple its not a challenge. Its alright.
If Knack came out 15 years ago on PS1 it would got high scores and lots of praise. Knack is no different than Spyro and Crash Bandicoot. The gaming culture is different. Platformers was the best games to play back then. Now shooters are the big thing. Knack is a good game to pick up and play. If you expected more from Knack then platformers are not for you.
First of all, I wouldn't call Knack a platform, more of a brawler like Darksiders. Just because you are a shooter doesn't mean you automatically get you great scores, Killzone SF is averaging 7's despite looking amazing and being an FPS The levels and enemies are uninspired, one moment you cruise through enemies like they're nothing, next moment you get killed instantly. The game had potential but the devs decided to play it safe. This isn't 1999, it's 2013. Safe doesn't necessarily get you outstanding scores, especially if the game has flaws in other aspects. Now this is just me, but I'd rather play Crash or Spyro instead of Knack, those games had real heart
"IGN 10/10 it's ok" lol
The way that Cerny describes this game, is exactly the mindset reviewers should have gone in with. I only wish he would have said it before launch. A game that is an onramp to consoles for a casual user who may have only played Angry Birds. Of course, I think it wouldve helped if they wouldve either made this game a PSN title or a discounted retail in the $30 range. It wouldve eased the pain of purchasing such a simple title, for those who craved more out of a platformer. This as a pack in title, wouldve been awesome! As is, I think it is just fine and a great title for those who want something the entire family can play... or those who crave that old-school flavor that tends to get overlooked in lieu of more action oriented outings. If you are having second thoughts about the price, just look at it from this persepective: its longer than both Battlefield 4 and CODs single player games put together. So, if you are a single player gamer and want something that is both fun and fairly lengthy... This could be your game. If thats still not reason enough... Rent it . Either way, you get to experience the game for yourself and may come away pleasantly surprised.
Cerny said before that this was a game for new players or to potentially be the first console game someone plays.
Knack is awesome and was severely underscored in the reviews. Its FUN. Yes, the combat can get competitive but there are a ton of enemy types so you're constantly evolving how you approach to take out each enemy. Honestly, this is a sleeper title, give it a shot, you will enjoy it. No fanboy bs here, I was expecting to hate it, a 60 on metacritic represents a broken game to me. This game is not broken, far from it. It's delightful and after playing killzone, I enjoyed my time with Knack far more.
Sounds like you're trying to justify your purchase
I didn't buy it, I got it for free in buy two for 1 promotion. It's the best next gen game I've played. I'm enjoying it more than killzone and I bought that game. Read impressions from normal people who didn't have to review a difficult game in a very small window.
Anyone got the plat trophy yet on hard. Just wondered
